The Memphis Rap Crew Beloved By Metalheads Everywhere
This Memphis, Tennessee rap group are not just big among rap fans, but they are also heavily enjoyed among metalheads.
I'm not doing a year end #music list but I will share a few Bandcamp playlists of stuff I've been listening to a lot recently. These playlists were made for preshow and setbreak music on a private streaming event. They tend to start slow and gain steam as they go, so if the first tune or two are too mellow just skip ahead. There's some #jazz and #rap#hiphop heavy on the DJ/producer side, and modern #soul#funk and some weird rock and whatever Hiatus Kaiyote is 🤷
Decided (or rather planned) to release a new song in the spirit of New Year's. Inspired by dreams I had and general belief's on the Egyptian deity, Thoth.
From what I've heard, the #slang term "def" (in the late 1980s) meant something that was interesting or cool. Then Russell Simmons came along and started the comedy series #Def Jam. If this is true, the band Def Leppard inspired the term. How is it that a #British rock band inspire a #HipHop producing legend to name his show that way? I'm sure it's a long connection, but that blows my mind. #Rap
ICYMI, I posted my final Substack of the year on Sunday. It gathers a handful of Best of 2023 lists I contributed to as well as some final thoughts on the year in rap. Read here. ---> https://mreeves.substack.com/p/the-end-of-2023
One of my goals in 2024 is to find more folks on Mastodon actively interested in rap and music culture in general. I love the techies and politicos...but I'm still looking for my people here. Reach out if that means you.
Here it is, my top 20 albums of 2023. It's not ALL metal, although there's a lot of metal. I know not everyone likes metal (or brutal death metal) - but there's some rap, some punk, a little post punk- actually, my top 3 here are all non-metal.
As always, let me know your thoughts, especially if you check some of them out, or already have.
Salt-N-Pepa released their debut album, “Hot, Cool & Vicious”
One of the first albums to be released by an all-female rap group, this album has several definitive hits, including the unforgettable hit "Push It". My parents got the single the following year! Pretty rare occurrence, as they were more classic rock fans. But Push It was just that big of a hit back then.
The album includes a couple other hits, "My Mic Sounds Nice" and "I'll Take Your Man”. But other than these, it’s a pretty basic album, even by mid-80’s standards.
I’ve always enjoyed Salt-N-Pepa’s sassy, fun, lighthearted “bad girl” attitude. This album is like a female version of “Licensed To Ill”. Good beats, interesting samples, and tons of attitude.
