Someone asked "How do you guys solo play?" on the subreddit.

I LOVE this question so i took a moment to write up my answer https://www.reddit.com/r/mythic_gme/comments/1db3owa/comment/l7t7h99/

If you're on Reddit still, and you I'd love to see your answer.

Also, OMG some of the ways people do this sounds ... so painful. Like OMG WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO YOURSELF, but it just goes to show how different our 🧠s are.

Seeing how radically differently people approach is also insightful in that it gives us a clue as to why some people find so much more enjoyment with solo play AND an frustrations in group plays

We don't just enjoy different types of games (trad vs narrative vs whatever) and settings. We also want to interact with our games in different ways at different speeds. There will always be some degree of "impedance mismatch" when playing with others.

There's also the Solo Game Master's Guide, which I picked up at in 2023, started reading, but got distracted by life/work/other projects Given a certain solo/co-opt game we've got cooking, now seems like a good time to pick it up again (and to use the Summer Reading list to finish it).

Continuing to replace the AI-generated images in my game now that I understand how problematic it is.

It's turning out to be making my game better. Below is a comparison between the AI image I'd generated (on the left) for a snowy outpost and what I drew (on the right).

The AI version is evocative enough, I suppose, but it's obviously AI generated. And the image on the right is MUCH closer to what I envisioned for the scene (despite my art skills). I like mine better.

How was your weekend? I love a rainy weekend in the Pacific Northwest corner of America, as it relieves my guilt of doing what I want to do ... staying inside. I read a little, wrote a little, hacked a little ... even played a classic from the 90s (Curse of Monkey Island on ).

I also did a little math. Yeah, been thinking of taking the "Yes, and.." dice mechanics used for luck rolls in games (not sure who came up with it first), and fusing it with Mythic GM Emulator's Fate Chart, popular with the crowd. Since I'm always playing with my notes written in on the screen, I hacked it in . Shared the details in case anyone wanted to do something similar in their favorite programming language.

Looks like there's a new #solarpunk #TTRPG on the block: https://www.sdrgames.studio/pages/why-we-fight by the creators of the "Earth Rising" board game.

"Why We Fight is a solo+ narrative TTRPG where you play a crew of eco-punks fighting fascism to build a brighter, greener future."

"(...) help struggling refugees and the havens they’ve made, and build a thriving, self-sustaining solar-punk community, all while pushing back against a force that seeks to blame the powerless (...)"

At a loose end and not sure what kind of project to take up. Should I write another novel? Start a web serial? Write some ? An action RPG or sim game in ? Videos on video game history? A
campaign book?

I need a side project now that I have a day job, to keep me moving, keep me creative.

lextenebris,
@lextenebris@vivaldi.net avatar

@mcoorlim Well, if you've got that much time, maybe try something that isn't quite as in the normal silo as you might think.

Pick up one of the new generations of #soloRPG games and began blogging your play as a web serial. Extra points if it's not a mode of play or genre of play that you normally engage with, giving you an excuse to push yourself out of your normal comfort zone.

There's a lot of different intellectual and creative stimulation points in that kind of move forward and there are too few people blogging their play rather than making videos. There are some really good people doing solo actual play videos – but not nearly as many blogging such that they reveal their thoughts along the way at a metalevel before returning to portraying the game fiction and mechanics.

Just thought.

O.M.G.Squeee! I just stumbled across this amazing video by Howard Abrams about "Crafting Ironsworn in Emacs" which discusses how he's integrated all the moves, tables, and mechanics of Ironsworn into Emacs, allowing him to easily play solo Ironsworn games.

THEN he went and genericised the system to play other games.

Regardless of how you feel about #emacs you should check this out. Every solo playable game should have a tool this awesome.

Why are you playing systems? are living off their social interaction and emergent storytelling, which is not-existent or strongly diminished when playing solo. Which system do you play and what makes them work for you?

samurro,

Did I frame this question wrong? #solorpg #solottrpg #ttrpg #pnp #ironsworn

kik,

@samurro Sorry, we're not that many following those hashtags :)

Personally, I play the same systems I play in group : dnd, Shadowrun and Traveller, with Mythic GME on top.

There are many reasons to love , like the love of writing (tried to have my friends play PbP, this didn't pan out 😅), the desire to finally be a player when you're a forever DM, the desire to finally see a campaign reach conclusion, etc. In about 10 years of roleplaying, I haven't see a campaign with other players reach conclusion, as a player or as a DM. Not once. Supposedly "life" gets in the way, systematically. Maybe I'm unlucky. And it's even more annoying when you've been doing worldbuilding specifically crafted for the characters of your players.

With solorpg, I can build as much as I want, nobody can take it from me. The emergent storytelling is there thanks to Mythic or other oracle systems - actually way better than when DMing. And the social aspect is there too, just have characters discussing.🤷

kik,

@samurro Oh btw, I forgot a very obvious reason to love : you can play when you want. You can play every night of a week if you want, then pause for two months, then start again, then play in a waiting room when you have a bit of time or something.

I play every night of the week (playing three different games), spending my evening writing instead of playing videogames or watching series (I still play videogames on week-ends to change a bit). I replaced consumerism in my life with creativity, that's awesome.

It goes beyond writing by the way, as there are a lot of close arts that work well combined with solorpgs : some nights, I'll just draw a cool scene from one of my games, or make a portrait for one of my characters. Other nights, I'm sculpting/3d printing/painting minis for my dnd combats. And when writing, exploring with Mythic the vastness of the worlds beyond me ridicules even the most big budget videogame. And I can have an other of those world every night if I want.

samurro,

@lextenebris The last paragraph depicts my thoughts about it.
In my book #solorpg are a vastly different experience to "ordiniary" #ttrpgs with multiple players.

kik,

@samurro @lextenebris What is "ordinary ttrpg"? 😂 I haven't played with two groups who were playing the exact same way. Some prefer combat, some prefer exploration, some prefer epic stories, some prefer sandboxes. And then, there is the GM style. Some build a whole world in advance. Some follow written adventures to the letter. Some figure what's next just based on players suggestions, or rolling dice. And then, some groups are the same 4 or 5 players every week. Some are players coming in and out and never having the same table.

is modular by nature. is just one other way to play it. If your point is that "there are aspects of playing in group that you don't have when playing solo", well, yes? :D The reverse is true too. And there are aspects of playing in group one way that you don't get when playing in group an other way.

The good news is that you won't be struck by lightning if you play both solo and in group. Nobody asked you to choose either one or the other.

samurro,

@kik @lextenebris So much text. And yet I fail to see what new bring to the table. My intention was never to shame #solorpg players. I was just genuinely interested in motivation/experiences...even quotations marks are ignored...sigh

Did some sketch painting tonight. It's prep for a Solo RPG called Apothecaria. Decided to paint the little cottage my Witch is gonna inherit.

I think it's done, gonna let it fully dry, then maybe go in with some shadows but we'll see. Don't wanna over-work it. The point is to be a quick sketch.

So I'm interested in trying to find something I can use as counters for #SoloRPG purposes.

I'd particularly like to find some flat disks, roughly about 2cm across, that I could glue paper to. I got some printable sheets with counter designs and they're about that size at the smallest, so that would be ideal.

I imagine there must be some #boardgame pieces I could seek out, preferably cheap ones, but no luck finding any so far.

Anyone with any clue where I could look? #Craft stores maybe?
