We’ve had Bread & Beer for a while but finally played it tonight. What a fun game! Very tricky, especially with only getting to score the lower of your beer or bread sales at the end. Played it 2x because we had some hilarious errors the first time.

Played some Bohnanza Dahlias tonight! Lost to the 14yo, who is a shark at negotiating exchanges. So glad they re-themed Bohnanza - such a great game & the Dahlias cards are so pretty (art by Beth Sobel!).

Standard Saturday farmers market ride with a twist, as a marathon basically blocked off all roads to our neighborhood this morning. Actually, it was no big deal on a bike. It’s only a mess getting in/out in a car. All we had to do was pause for a few minutes to cheer on runners & watch out for drivers who had to go off of main routes and were lost and in a hurry. Day 27 of

I appreciate Jamey Stonemaier making a very clear statement about their approach to Generative AI in board games: https://stonemaiergames.com/generative-ai-not-for-us. I’d like to see more publishers stating their policies. My perspective: I want to support game publishers who fairly compensate artists for their work.

Popped out for a quick ride in between rain and incoming thunderstorms to pick up some lunch downtown. I’ve probably said this before, but in the 18 months I’ve been biking, I’ve been to downtown Nashville more times than in the 18 years before that combined. It’s a little too far for a casual walk and a nightmare in a car. Perfect use case for a bike. Few biz with bike parking though. Thanks @timcoffman for some action pix! Day 11 of

Person on a bike, waiting for traffic that’s blocking the intersection to move along, ugh

What I need people to understand is that making "fun" tag lines or headings or what have you on the "Make [thing] great again" template is kinda like doing the same with "[thing] über alles", "[thing] und [thing]", "[thing] mit uns" or shit like that right before the holocaust, and it's not funny or cool.

kimu,
@kimu@wandering.shop avatar

@forteller I feel the same way about people making red hats that have alternate versions of that slogan. It’s not clever or funny, it’s creepy to me.

@ned I’ve seen a lot of dumb takes on the collapse but wow, his take on this might be a new low. The one thing that’s consistent in his shambolic worldview is devaluing actual expertise.

Hey , did you know starts on Monday? This was a huge source of change for me last year - my first times biking in the rain and going on group rides. I really enjoyed having the push of a small commitment to bike every day. Any distance counts! More here: https://30daysofbiking.com

Are you a fan of #ArkNova, but not sure if you need to pick up the expansion #MarineWorlds?

Take a read through my review below to see all the details.

@boardgamebreakdown definitely agree with your assessment! I think it would be too much for brand new players, but it’s a great expansion for people who love Ark Nova.

One of the best things about my job is solving problems for other people by saying or doing something very simple that they aren’t thinking about because they don’t know it’s an option or they’re just stuck in how they’re approaching it. I definitely wish that I had anyone in my work life who could/would do that for me, but I’m happy I can at least do it for others.

A cold snap this week meant I could try out my new sweater vest today. Like a wearable version of a warm hug! The only caveat is that Plotulopi is rough to me, so it was good to wear it over something.

Ok, I took a ride on a Bluebike e-bike and I'm a convert. Can anyone recommend a good guide to choosing an e-bike?

kimu,
@kimu@wandering.shop avatar

@misc this is a pretty good guide on questions to be considering as you look at different e-bikes: https://www.consumerreports.org/health/electric-bikes/buying-guide/

I finally finished up my but having issues with how I want to photograph them for the blog.

Here are some examples of a really stylized version I did, that I think captures the aspect of the game but I'm not sure if a more standard set would be better so people could see the colors used better.

Thoughts? I'm putting a poll in the replies to this post if anyone is interested.

@boardgamebreakdown I know it’s a bit outside the norm for miniatures pix, but the colors you used seem like they would really pop in natural lighting. Without knowing the game well (horror isn’t my thing), wondering if outside with some greenery might be a good look? It looks like you did a great job with the painting!

Having a hard deciding on next game. We either want to do with Marine Life expansion or with Bellfaire and Spirecrest. Any opinions?

I find myself focusing on a lot now on the idea of repairing rather than replacing. I started inserting the question “can this be fixed?” as a first step when something breaks or wears out. It feels stupidly simple, but just making myself ask the question has changed how I think about things.

The world's ten worst bike lanes, rated by Discerning Cyclist. In number 1, "A Moronic Cycle Lane in Edinburgh, Scotland"—yes, it's Leith Walk!

What it doesn't show is the invisible 5cm high bevelled kerb separating the cycle path from the pedestrian pavement, so that if the sun's in your eyes or you're not keeping your eyes peeled you WILL sprain your ankle sooner or later. (Yes, there have been multiple pedestrian injuries.)

I have to survive this when food shopping.

@cstross #5 from Louisville is still unfortunately a pretty standard “bike lane” design in some places, at least in my town (Nashville, Tennessee).

I support banning right turn on red even if it only prevents people from honking at you and then throwing their coffee at you because you’re waiting for a red light in a cycle lane.

kimu,
@kimu@wandering.shop avatar

@wesley @xtaran and then drivers still turn red on right anyway, sigh.

We played a bunch of card & board games in January, between vacation + weather. Finished Artisans of Splendent Vale. Made an effort to play more Everdell and worked our way thru unplayed expansions on our shelves. The only new game this month was Pies, a casual trick taking game, which we enjoyed.

Does there exist some sort of bike lock that is a wire on a spool, that you just drag out of its box and around a pole to lock it up?

Not the safest thing for long time storage, of course, but I think it could be a more hassle free way of just parking for a quick pop-in to a shop or a café or something than having to use a normal lock.

Anyone heard of something like this?

kimu,
@kimu@wandering.shop avatar

@artemesia @forteller my bike came with a pre-installed cafe lock. I only rely on it solo for brief errands when I’m nearby - it’s enough to deter a casual theft but not much more.
