There's unfortunately no video record of a fabled exchange between Joe Pyne (talk show host) and Frank Zappa.
According to Pyne lore, he invited his audience to “Say hello to a musician—and I use that term loosely—representing a rock ’n’ roll band known as the Mothers of Invention.”
Zappa, 24, nodded to the booing crowd.
Pyne looked him over and said, “I guess your long hair makes you a woman.”
Zappa shrugged. “I guess your wooden leg makes you a table.”
I have always been fascinated by #zappa’s ‘sound collage’ technique, and most particularly in ‘Lumpy Gravy’ an album Frank cut apart (literally, exacto knife to the tapes) and reassembled a dozen different ways. The 86 release of that album is almost unrecognizable compared to the original!
About 5 years ago I set out to make my own small homage to one of my favorite albums. I grabbed my toy megaphone* and sat down with Audacity.
Pretty drained. Relaxing, listening to the new #zappa “Over-nite Sensation” box set, free drawing on my iPad, and playing with the cats. #Shabbat shalom.
Over-Nite Sensation (50th Anniversary) est sorti !
Je commence par la fin.
Dernier morceau du CD 4 (concert du 12 mai 1973 à Detroit).
Un excellentissime medley King Kong/Chunga’s Revenge/Son Of Mr. Green Genes.
Avec Jean-Luc Ponty en pleine forme.
"I have an important message to deliver to all the cute people all over the world. If you're out there and you're cute, maybe you're beautiful. I just want to tell you somethin' — there's more of us UGLY MOTHERFUCKERS than you are, hey-y, so watch out."
Via a reddit post, I just discovered a site called Life On The Road, which is a deep dive into every live recording of Frank Zappa (currently through 1977).
Like many of you, I have been missing the old web, full of niche sites built out slowly by one or two experts on some nerdy topic. This Zappa site reminds me of what we used to find online back in the late '90s (albeit with a modern look).
"Eat your shoes
Don't forget the strings
And sox
Even eat the box
Your bought 'em in
You can eat the truck
That brought 'em in
Garbage truck
Eat the truck & driver
And his gloves
Nutritiousness
Deliciousness
Worthlessness"
Frank Zappa - 'Waka/Jawaka' (1972) (1988 remaster)
#FrankZappa's switch to some sort of jazzfusion. Complex time signatures, awesome soloing, brass, modular moog, #guitar, hallucinations, other weird stuff: another most enjoyable #Zappa album.
Ça c'est bien pour un lundi matin, c'est frais, ça va te donner envie de sautiller, de faire la bise à tes collègues et d'envoyer paître ton chef grognon.
We were the house band for a few years at a great neighborhood bar in Durham. They encouraged us to play anything we wanted. And so we did! Here’s a long cover of #Zappa’s #KingKong. Some fun with an #EBow on my #SteelGuitar at around the 8 minute mark.
float into the afternoon with last night's frow show on @WFMU, including new sounds, a #zappa mini-set, live music from trad gras och stenar '72, the soft boys '78, greg davis '05, & chuck berry firing his pickup band & playing solo '87. https://bit.ly/3NdEupU#radio#music
way fascinating: the only english-language book about the underground #czech band, the plastic people of the universe. they evolved from the primitives group, who staged happenings & covered #zappa, the fugs, velvet underground, & the dead (not sure which songs) in #prague circa 1969. the plastic people could only circulate their music through tape trading, often arrested, etc.. doesn't seem likely but hope jaroslav riedel's massive 2016 bio will be translated from czech. https://www.tomhull.com/ocston/guests/jy/jy-ppu.php
If you're familiar with this at all you know that it's very much not for everyone, but this is a breathtakingly weird must see for anyone who loves outsider art or underground filmmaking.
Some have argued for this being a go-for-broke surrealist film, but my personal take is that (as with many low-budget films of this era) the surrealism is largely unintentional
For the music nerds in the house: I would be remiss if I did not point out that "World's Greatest Sinner" has an early soundtrack by Frank Zappa. He said this was the world's worst movie, but was willing to put his name on his work (unlike Edgar G. Ulmer who worked on the cinematography under a pseudonym).
In the still from the original post here, the band in the background is the Johnny Otis show (name can be seen on the drum set).
