I don't know what this bush is. My mom planted it years ago. We are all very allergic to it, but the flowers are so pretty and they only bloom for a short period of time so we haven't torn it out.

Me (to 16 year old): If you want to protest in college, I will bail you out.

16 year old: Really? Thank you.

It always amazes me how many people in cities drive big ass vehicles. I drive an SUV. I live on a dirt road, drive dirt roads the majority of the time, and have to have four wheel drive to get up the road in the winter. What is their excuse?

Child marriage is legal in California. There is no legal age limit- it sits at 0. There will be a hearing on a bill ending child marriage on the 23rd of this month. See what you can do to help.

Recently, Virginia became the 12th state to make child marriage illegal. California, can you be 13th?

There is a lot of stuff going on in my local politics. So much that national politics is kind of taking the back burner for me. We have democrats running as republicans just to get in office. I hope this plan works out because it's already looking like people may be losing their homes starting in January. We need to repeal and replace this septic ordinance. Then we need to work on this sewer shit which isn't a real sewer, only takes "effluent" away to dump it in a local river's watershed.

I know everyone likes to dump on rural people as though we're a monolith and are all MAGA and stupid, but we're not. Come to a rural area sometime and see what you find. In my community up north, we have a co-op grocery store. Has been around forever providing groceries, hardware, and feed for animals. In my community in northern Michigan we're fighting real estate investors (from your "big" cities) who want to build Higgins Lake up into the next resort town. 1/

In Michigan, Governor Whitmer has made a lot of progress on a number of issues. One issue she is FAILING us on is mining in the Upper Peninsula. She has okayed funding for a Canadian company to come into the UP, specifically the Porcupine Mountain region, and do incredibly harmful strip mining. She needs to be called out for this. The U.P. has some of the only pristine wilderness left in Michigan and it will be ruined by this mining.

The dogs are having a very bad day. The neighbor is getting a new septic put in and it's noisy and there are people out there. I can't let the dogs in the backyard because they will have a fit. They don't like people in Maggie's yard one little bit.

They are also having to get in the car today to go to the cabin. They hate car rides.

Like I said, the dogs are having a bad day and they don't even realize it's going to get worse.

I am going to set myself a goal for the end of the week and if I accomplish the task, I am going to buy myself a cross stitch kit. I have been wanting to cross stitch again (my mom taught me when I was young, but as I aged I found other things to spend my time doing). Thinking it might be fun to try a small kit again.

I can't believe I am going to be in the Upper Peninsula by the end of this week! Last year we didn't go up there full time until late May.

Decided to go to the car to read this. I was sitting in the library, but the subject matter is so personal to me. I was sitting there with tears. Maybe it's a sign that I am not in the right place for this book, but I will never be there so... Powering through is what I will do.

Updated

It's been awhile since I have done an intro so here goes...

I am a former librarian, I read about 300 books a year, I live in northern Michigan during the winter months and in the Upper Peninsula during the warmer months, I have 2 teenagers, 3 cats, 2 dogs, I run bookstodon.com and woodworking.group, spent the last couple of years learning about anarchism, married to the guy who told me the first night we went out that he would marry me in 3-5 years and he did

Many people don't pay attention to their local politics. I urge everyone to pay attention to your local officials. Here in little Higgins Lake where the per capita income is $35,000 many of my elderly neighbors face losing their homes that they worked all their lives for. For many years it has been a sleepy community full of hardworking people who don't always make enough. Now we have a $150 million half assed sewer coming up that is going to cost people upwards of $45,000 to plug into. 1/

So the 16 year old's tech teacher shadowed the 13 year old's class the other day. He told the 16 year old that the 13 year old is better at programming than them. Wrong thing to say. Now the competition is on.

Imagine what these kids that are contracting measles in Florida are going to think when they figure out their parents could have stopped them from getting it in the first place and that the state not only didn't step up, but stepped back and said- whatever.

Attending a virtual conference on how to talk to people about climate change on Tuesday. Looking forward to hearing what the speakers have to say. I don't know what I am hoping to hear, but I do hope to come away with some more tools in my toolbox.
