Currently obsessed with the 12" mix of Kirsty MacColl's version of A New England.

The production is clean as fuck, the guitars glisten beautifully, and the bass lopes along in the bounciest way you'd want it to. Absolutely wonderful.

And Kirsty's vocal... 😍

Damned if I can find much information on who played on it though. People suggesting Johnny Marr played guitar, but purely because it kinda sounds like him. So far as I can tell, it's probably not.

Some comments saying Steve Lilywhite (the producer + Kirsty's ex) or Derek Forbes on bass, but again, nothing concrete. Which is a shame, because the musicianship on this track is absolutely stunning.

It's getting ridiculous now. I must have listened to this a dozen times in a row. It's basically a stim at this point.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@Ade_on_drums Outrageous nonsense. I'll have to phone up Steve Lilywhite. Is his number in Galore?

    I got hooked on this track for a few days after watching that last episode. It's an absolute fucking monster of a tune.

    Given how Amazon is with its own products and Prime Day/Black Friday, I question why anyone would ever buy an Echo or a Fire TV or whatever at any other time of the year.

    DJDarren,
    @DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

    @craiggrannell We have four Echos around the house, and paid full price for none of them. Hell, at least one came free with a (discounted) Ring doorbell.

    1 - The upbeat tunes are doing their job, and getting the endorphins flowing.

    2 - I've just made myself plan my work day like I keep promising myself I will every morning before utterly failing to do so.

    3 - My To Do list today is reasonably simple.

    @3goodthings

    DJDarren,
    @DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

    As an aside, the day planning thing is huge for me. I have a tendency to float if I don't have a defined plan for the day. So I have a spreadsheet that opens automatically at 7am that I should fill in with my day's work activities, that most of the time goes untouched for a number of stupid reasons.

    I allow myself the first half an hour of the day for set up, but invariably just use it to toss it off on the internet. Today I've mostly used it for good.

    DJDarren,
    @DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

    As an aside to the aside; I kinda miss the days when I was less self-reflective, and more driven by impulse.

    I mean, back then I wasn't a terribly effective societal drone, which made me feel like shit, but at least I didn't spend every waking fucking moment interrogating my own impulses.

    Black cab driver just nearly ended my life. Absolute prick. Barreling 40 down a road with speed bumps next to a school at kicking out time. I am turning the other cheek but hope she has a really disappointing dinner this evening. Tosser.

    Cake - The Distance

    How have I only just noticed that this uses the same sample that all those west coast hip hop tracks used back in the mid-90s.

    Also, the bass line to this is fat as fuck.

    Also also, the bit where the drummer smacks the tom toms (I think it is) ahead of the chorus resonates really nicely in The Good Headphones.

    Lars Frederiksen & The Bastards - To Have and to Have Not
