The beauty of not having quote toots is seeing your entire tl fill up with people riffing off a theme with absolutely no indication as to why and how it started.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@stavvers Here we have to work for our understanding of the pooptoots, not like Over There where it's handed to you on a platter. This is good, honest work, and we enjoy the shitposts more for it.

A kind reminder that, intentionally harmful posts aside, when you log onto social media, you are responsible for your own self-care. Folks on Mastodon are great about adding CWs, but that’s a courtesy. Attacking someone for posting about something that you, personally, find troublesome is off the mark. If you’re bothered by a post, close the app for a bit and take care of yourself; there’s no need for others to be upset, too.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

To clarify here, I'm not suggesting that CWs are bad. They're not. It's good that problematic things can be discussed and hidden away from those who might find them distressing.

And I also don't wish to minimise those who have a genuine fear of bugs. But it hit me wrong that someone (who didn't even follow me) came along to tell me they were unhappy that I made them see a photo of a stag beetle.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

LB has reminded me: I recently had someone giving me shit for posting a photo of a stag beetle without putting it behind a content warning.

I get that some people find bugs icky, but they're just out there in the world, being bugs and doing bug shit. Do we really have to consider the feelings of people who don't like them?

Where do we draw the line on demanding things be hidden behind a CW?

Did you know, PJ Harvey has over 1.5 million Spotify listeners a MONTH, and makes less than £60k a year from Spotify. That's bonkers.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@nowster That's something I found fascinating in reading Duff McKagan's autobiography recently. He ended up going off to study for a business degree so he could better understand the finances around the music industry.

He now runs a wealth management firm for musicians...

@james @TheBreadmonkey

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@james @TheBreadmonkey I think the streaming model definitely benefits the big, established artists more than the smaller ones.

If I buy a small punk band's CD from the merch table at their gig, they get 100% of the profit from that. Say £8 (for a £10 CD). How many times do I have to listen to that album on Spotify for them to earn the same amount? Will I listen that many times? Unlikely.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@james Oh aye, you're absolutely right.

Spotify came along when I was at Bournemouth studying for my radio production degree, so it was something we discussed a bit. Ultimately, isn't the difference between radio and Spotify is that you're only playing the song once to millions of people (hopefully) on radio, but thousands of times to thousands of people with Spotify. The range is different, but weirdly comparable in our heads.

I know that a lot of people have no idea where food comes from or don’t have relationship with food other than it comes from groceries/restaurant/mother/wife. This. This is wild.

@xgebi I remember seeing some barely functioning empathy vacuum once going off on one at Heinz on their Facebook page because they'd just discovered that baked beans are halal.

I no longer use Facebook.

This is the closest you can get to this door on Street View.

Given the proximity to the river, you can see why the love of cormorants from the owner.

DJDarren,

@cstross I love Edinburgh's history of just building over shit and worrying about it later. I've done the Mary King's Close tour a couple of times because it absolutely fascinates me down there.

@u0421793 16. I'm ok with lower storage because I can offload shit to external drives when I'm not using it, but I feel like speccing as much RAM as you can afford is sensible when you can't upgrade it later.

Alas, this has become yet another culture war issue. I have friends affected by this. I’m sure many of you do. They say their means to tour is massively reduced. Their ability to respond to last-minute invites (common for indies) is now non-existent. But there’s an off-the-shelf deal the UK said no to. I’ll bet it still won’t say yes.

@craiggrannell @mwarhurst What we need is some agreement with the other EU countries that would allow some level of free movement of people and goods across borders. A union of European countries, if you will.

Wouldn't that be nice.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@craiggrannell You know, I think the thing that's most infuriated me around Brexit, is the belief among a section of Brits that this fucking country is the pinnacle of modern society, so much so that everyone is clamouring to be here. That absolute horse shit is what's driven most of this. @mwarhurst

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@u0421793 As of typing this, crypto is winning, but the thing with crypto is that you can avoid it. Same with university.

Inkjet printers have been positioned in society in such a way that we all have to use them, and we all have to pay exorbitant amounts for ink that will dry up before it's all been used.

Tie up the inkjet printer makers next to the letting agents and let the vultures do the rest.

A mate from church is a baker with his own bakery. Today at mass he gave me a loaf of bread as a gift. I don't think I've ever been gifted a loaf of bread before and it's possibly the best sort of gift.

Where season 1 dealt with Carmie’s demons while trying to keep The Beef afloat, season 2 really goes into what makes fine dining special, but without veering into the pretentious.

It’s just incredible.

@brentonwalters It’s the same here in the UK. However, it’s also available “on the internet”.
