I love reading the toots. Eurovision is such a throwback.

It also reminds me of some episode of rick & morty, where planets had to compete to avoid annihilation.

On the NL to pick up Benson and there's a guy on the bus with his adorable small pittie. So sweet. So gentle. And he's so brusque with it. Pushing it away, talking harshly to it. It is making me sad.

And grateful for the bond I seem to be building with my Schmoopie, in contrast.

Also hoping Benson's poops are more solid than they were this morning.

Thinking someone with a Hispanic surname can't embrace white supremacy is a misunderstanding of both race and racism. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/08/texas-shooting-white-supremacy-non-whites/

@pbump
I was agog when my ex partner (who researched far right groups and wrote about them extensively) would tell me about POC joining white supremacist groups. He had the receipts.

Internalized racism + white supremacy is something, man.

Since my late 40s, I've railed against the growing signs of middle age.

I'm done with fighting the truth: I'm middle aged, my body is both better and worse, and I might as well embrace the tools and things that mitigate the creakiness.

I had a conversation yesterday with a bestie about some bathroom truths and the answer we arrived at was: our asses are bigger and we are not as limber as we once were. So we've resolved to install bidets. Sorry not sorry.

Middle age life is raw, kids.

DeliaChristina,
@DeliaChristina@sfba.social avatar

And why am I online adding middle-aged mitigators to my weekly grocery list?

Because Benson pooped down a hill this morning on our 2 mile+ walk, then KICKED it, and I had to go on a disgusting easter egg poop hunt to bag it, and I'm too old for this shit, literally.

On the BART this morning (6.30 am), Benson and I got on a car with a guy having some kind of mental break on it. He was loud, talking and shouting to himself. He made weird sounds. He was disruptive.

And you know what?

No one killed him.

Benson and I gave him a wide berth; I kept an eye on him in case he tried to approach my dog.

But he was alive as he rode the train.

The mentally ill, the indigent, the broke down folks - they all deserve to survive a train ride.

Jesus christ, America.

I am officially too old for transatlantic dating. I can barely date anyone who lives in SF. That's a whole transbay tube ride!

@jbqueru the transbay tube still screams loud enough to wake the dead.

DeliaChristina,

@jbqueru if I was younger by, oh, 27 years I'd probably think transatlantic dating was dashing and sooooo romantic.

But now all I feel is exhaustion.

The way I'm starting to see it is we can either keep talking about how and why is not attractive to Black people or we can just start shifting the environment by being unapologetically ourselves. I do believe people will gravitate here if they see it's fun to do so and that they can have a place here.

I'm not proclaiming to have all the answers+solutions, but I know we ain't never been wanted anywhere and we have found ways to make do and do us period.

"or we can just start shifting the environment by being unapologetically ourselves."

Agree. So much of this.

I know nothing about moss, tech, code, software blah blah, NASA, big trees.

But I've been here talking my thing and being me. Making up hashtags; oversharing; boosting what I like; doing my own version of sub-tooting; being opinionated; showing up.

*Tooting about my new dog, Benson, and making up a random hashtag for him.

This morning's walk was an exercise in Dog Mercury being in Dog Retrograde:

  • overslept
  • massive poops
  • lost 2 poop bags
  • badly improvised poop bag situation
  • raised hackles and barking due to feisty young pitbull making eye contact with Benson
  • ginned up senior pittie feeling his oats, leaving his scent on everything, and dragging out the walk
  • one tired woman who HAS SHIT TO DO TODAY who has no time for this nonsense
  • menopausal gas (for real, the list of crap that happens as you approach is ridiculous and wrong)

Hmph.

Same here! I’ve read on here recently that the fediverse and Mastodon hasn’t been a safe space for Black and brown people.

Very sorry to hear that. As a Black person, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive, so I’m staying put - for now.

I want nothing to do with anything Jack Dorsey is involved in. Folks forget he advocated for Musk acquiring Twitter in the first place.

@eosfpodcast We're the outliers and it's clear it's because we were very lucky with the instances we landed on.

Before I joined, a Friend made a strong recommendation for the instance they were on, and they set up my account. I did not have the spoons to do it on my own. Without that help, I'd still be on the Bird, yelling into the void and angry at the Muskovites.

I really want to lift up the mods of the SFBA instance: @cd24, @Ingurido, @jeffkibuule

I, a Black woman, have had a marvelous experience on Mastodon because these mods don't play. For being a place-specific instance, SFBA has a very clearly expressed value system and it's reflected in the mods. They are proactive, even-handed, and respectful.

I wish others on and through the could say the same of their instance mods.

@alienghic

There's no doubt - the Fediverse acts different from Twitter. Whether it's search or the convention of using tags - things are not the same.

I have found some newcomers' resistance to using tags a little puzzling. Tags are how one navigates and jumps across the Fediverse!

That's absolutely how I'm finding and other identity-specific content/users. I find the tag, scroll through the posts/users, and either follow the tag wholesale or pick out the users to follow. And so on and so on.

This has allowed me to follow folks on different instances, across topics, regions, etc.

For me, it's clear that there are at least 2 different issues at play, which are unfortunately not creating the best experience for folks: safety and belonging for Black + Brown users and then ease of use for all Fedi newcomers (especially if they come from the Twitters.)
