I think the last time was a decade ago playing the Portal demo on the Oculus Rift(?). I'd never seen room sized VR before and the experience was beautifully directed.
But, since then, it has all been incremental gains.

Finally I'm explaining how I made the pond with links to all the stuff I bought/used.

@Tattooed_Mummy that's lovely!

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@Tattooed_Mummy We dug up our garden and found an old (and very large) pond. We've since filled it with clover and flowers.

But now I'm thinking a tiny pond in there might be nice.

(The previous water feature was a hideous metal pump that filled and emptied a bucket.)

๐Ÿ†• blog! โ€œBook Review: The Glass Hotel - Emily St. John Mandelโ€
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†โ˜†

This book didn't really resonate with me. I enjoyed both Station Eleven and Sea of Tranquillity, so I think I was expecting something in a similar vein. Instead of ethereal sci-fi, this is a tangled tale which feels like a mish-mash of half a dozen movies. The central premise of a Ponzi scheme which warps โ€ฆ

I thought 'Oh, a silly grammar cock-up that makes for a fun local news story'. Then I read the first line. I won't spoil the surprise but maybe make sure there's no-one close when you yell 'OH FOR FU...'

: looking for a PC. Mostly for headless home serverโ€”Linux w/containers. Currently using a Pi4โ€”but RAM/CPU/mini-SD doesn't quite cut it.

Desiderata: not a full tower if poss (prefer Mac Mini form factor), mainstream architecture, reasonable price, efficient power use.

May wish to add gfx card later for gaming. (eGPU on mini PCsโ€”doable?)

Have built boxes in the distant past, but I value my time.

(Reply guy pre-emptingโ€”actual experiences please, avoid "you ACTUALLY want Y not X" etc.)

I use an HP Proliant Gen8
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2023/04/building-a-new-microserver/
Cheap 2nd hand. Shorter than a full tower. Runs Linux. Lots of space for disks. Has a PCie 16x slot for a GPU (although I've never used it).
Seems efficient, but can be a bit noisy depending on the disks you get.
Very expandable.

Given an arbitrary URl on my blog - how can I get the query which it would execute?

If you've a mind to help - https://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/425043/equivalent-of-url-to-postid-for-non-post-urls - much appreciated!

@gadgetoid maybe that's where I'm going wrong? I'm trying to use a sub-template which doesn't receive any information about the page which is rendering it.

If someone requests /blog/post123_ABC I want to get the data for /blog/post123

That is, if the request 404s in a very specific way - I'm going to trim the end off, and get the page without the extra _ABC.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@otto42 No.
Basically, if someone requests a page with .xml or .md or .txt at the end, I want to serve up that page with in that format.

I have it working for individual posts, but not for tags, categories, dates, etc.

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@mattround @otto42
That's probably the sensible way to do it.

But I've found something much more convoluted ๐Ÿ˜†

This has to be the campest, most ludicrously sequinned, joyous shows I've seen in quite some time. I knew nothing about Pippin, but my dad saw it back in the 1970s and loved it - so I snagged us a couple of tickets. The story itself is fun enough; an over-privileged princeling goes off to [โ€ฆ]

Mastodon is wild.

You can write something like "Imagine you had a cat - and one day it started speaking to you in Spanish. What would you do?"

And fully 75% of the replies will be "I'm allergic to cats so it would never happen."

In response to @adactio's provocation "A blog post doesn't need a title", @Edent argues that, as a HTML document, it necessarily does (even if it's blank).

But does a blog have to be HTML? I'd say: no - https://danq.me/does-a-blog-have-to-be-html

You receive a call on your phone.
The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

Your phone buzzes. You tap the notification This is what you see.

Still think it is a scam?
