Ekinnajay,

@tomkindlon @pots @longcovid super interesting to read this. I have post viral syndrome from EBV that mimics long covid in many ways and have had tons of GI issues that I didn't have before Mono. Working on changes with my diet along with supplements has improved my ME/CFS. I hope learning about this study can give relief to people that need it.

When you use a disposable filtering facepiece respirator (eg N95, FFP2), how often do you don it before you dispose of it?

I wear a mask with earloops because I use a lanyard. I go to eat lunch in my car and when I get outside, I take my mask off outside and have it hang there in case I see people. I found thy other man's would be squashed, it have other issues if I put them in a pocket, etc. I also want to reuse it when I go back into the building. If I've sneezed in it or it's wet because I've been sweating, I toss the mask at lunch. Otherwise, I toss it at the end of the day. I use a strip of tape on the inside mask around my nose and cheeks, and just refresh the tape at lunch. I use an ear saver devise on the back of my head to get a tight fit. I have head strap masks that are more breathable, but I was having to toss them at lunch, and they weren't convenient to put back on if I saw someone outside, for example. The lanyard is important in my masking routine and ensures I always have a mask handy when i need it.

I'm a teacher and I finally had to stop buying hand sanitizer and told the kids to buy their own. I was buying several bottles a week. I asked a student why they were using a hand sanitizer and not wearing a mask when covid was airborne. They said Covid was just a cold, and the proof was that no one else but me was wearing a mask. And according to him, I'm only wearing a mask because I'm old. When I explained that Covid was still a problem, he didn't want to hear it. I've stopped explaining anything about covid to people because this feeling of not wanting to hear it is pervasive. But people I know are starting to take notice of the sheer number of people they know having strokes and heart attacks. I personally know 3 people who have had a stroke, the younger is 35 and the oldest 61. All 3 were athletes and ate healthy, but had had covid several times. They don't attribute their strokes to covid, though, because covid is just a cold. They are still not wearing masks.

@trendless this was spot on, almost spooky how right he was.

I'm still struggling with the reaction I get from most people if I just say the word "covid".

A relative is now in the hospital with covid, for fluid in the lungs. What reaction do you expect from people when you tell them someone is in the hospital?

"Oh I'm sorry to hear that," "I hope they'll be ok," typical responses, right? Just something anyway. What do you think I get if I say someone is in the hospital due to covid?

Silence. That's what I get. No response.

If I talk about vaccines and say "covid", I get silence. If I talk about someone being sick and say "covid", I get silence. Anything at all, any topic, if I say the word "covid" the other person falls silent.

I can't think of any other topic where this happens. People at least try to be polite and dig out a canned response. Cancer? AIDS? Tragic accident? Assault? Anything else. I've never had so many people fall silent at the mention of one single word.

Oh and after several days, no one is following up either. Not "how are they doing?" or anything. Nothing. They would rather that my sick relative doesn't exist. What would they do if I was sick or disabled from covid? I guess they would rather I stop existing. It would make them more comfortable.

@novid

Ekinnajay,

@VeeRat @novid I don't have anyone in the hospital, but can totally relate to the silence part in conversations. I either get that it, or "not everything is about covid".

Hope your relative in the hospital recovers with no lingering effects. ❤️

I'm a teacher, and what I'm seeing daily at my school is frightening. This week in my school, there have been multiple fights, at least 2 per day, 2 hit jobs that I'm aware of, where students paid kids to physically attack other students. One was jumped and beaten in a stairwell, another was pulled back by their backpack, causing them to fall and crack their head on a wall. These are 11-14 year olds. I had a student using racial slurs in class, deliberately, and wouldn't stop. Kids entering classrooms while class is in session, to talk to their friends or start a fight, kids making homophobic statements in class and not stopping. Recently, I was walking in the hall and a student punched me in the arm, hard, as they passed me, for no discernible reason. I don't know the student. Two teachers had panic attacks in the middle of class and had to go home in the middle of the day. We are a school focused on social justice. We practice mediation and have tons of interventions and interventionists for our students and families. I've been at this school for 17 years and in education close to 30, several years in some rough schools and have never seen anything like it. Teachers in other schools all over are seeing similar things. It is not the lockdown, nor is it just social media. This has been a sudden change in the last 3 years and i know that covid is the root cause, and that social media is exacerbating what we're seeing. We are damaging our children, our future.

Ekinnajay,

@EricCarroll @longcovid I haven't had covid, as far as I'm aware. I do, however, have long EBV from 2016 which is why I'm so careful with my covid precautions. My symptoms are similar.

Kids respirators update:

The Kimberly-Clark duckbill N95 in small (54066) seems to fit excellent on my 3 and 5yo; 1yo's head is almost as big as 3, so expect it'll fit well, too

These are the first ones that seem to fit well enough to bother with a DIY qualitative fit test -- hoping to do one soon 🤞

Downside is the straps. They're good on first wear, but stretch enough that I assume fit will be worse, hence. There might be space on the edges of the 'bill' to staple on some new ones, though; might test a few hacks

Cost <$100CAD for a 50pk

@novid

Ekinnajay,

@trendless @novid I use the Blox duckbills, they have elastic straps which might work better? Also cheap.

Ekinnajay,

@erictopol I use nitter, so just see the posts I want to see. I can see comments, but mostly I'm not interested. I can't interact, or if it IS possible, I have no idea how to do it, but I'm only there for information, so it's fine.

I'm a teacher, and teachers started this week (students will start after Labor Day-US). I'm appalled at the number of teachers in our building willing to put themselves and their families at risk in an ongoing pandemic! There were less than 5 of us wearing masks, close to 100 staff, in an area of the US that was fairly covid conscious. You tell them there's a surge, many schools and districts that started earlier have had to shut down, and they don't blink, or care. These are educated people. Its maddening.

US Senator McConnell freezes up again for an extended period of time when attempting to answer a reporter's question about whether he'll run for re-election in 2026. There's video: https://twitter.com/HannahPThomas/status/1696936240040321474?s=20

@w7voa the man is having a mini stroke on camera, and they don't do anything, because politics. He needs to retire.

‘The FU.1 variant, also known as XBB.1.16.1.1, is a mutant Omicron recombinant. Alarmingly, it’s spreading worldwide at a rate 50% faster than current dominant strain, Arcturus (XBB.1.16) - and has already made its way to several countries.’

I love how they take these steps to protect themselves and leave the general public with the message that covid is over.
