Windows 11 is mocking me. "Slide to shut down the PC" it tells me, on a computer without a touch screen and unresponsive track pad.

EugestShirley,

Yes. I don't have a touch screen, because I am fussy about fingerprints on my screens. I disabled every touch pad because I always wear several sweaters in A/C.

Protests against Netanyahu at several cities around Israel yesterday again, with the one in capital city Tel Aviv drawing 30000 protesters, so the police declared it illegal and attacked it with water cannons

@b9AcE One reason Netanyahu was charged with corruption (2022) was the way he kept being in charge after losing several elections.
This is how it goes for people living under an authoritarian, even if he was elected initially.

The great 1966 film "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" stars the wonderful Zero Mostel (recreating his role from the original Broadway version -- a play that is still presented today by many groups!), and a host of others, including Buster Keaton in his last film role.

A side note about Buster, about whom I really need to write in more detail in the future, because he had a fascinating career starting in silent films. During the production of Forum, though he was frail and would die before the film was released, he did his own stunts, including some that were so violent they terrified the production crew. A really remarkable man.

The closing animated credits of the film present an oddity that is not immediately understandable. It features animated flies. Flies everywhere. Flies marching over and around the animated actor figures. All over the place. Why flies?

The production was at studios in Madrid, and on location in areas in and around the city. The area was loaded with flies that time of year, and food provided for the production included fruits and vegetables, and as a consequence the production team was plagued with flies throughout the shoot.

The animated flies in the closing credits are literally an "homage" of sorts to this production problem.

So now you know.

EugestShirley,
@EugestShirley@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@lauren
“Actual fruits and vegetables were used during shooting, and were often left to rot in the sun at the end of the shooting day; as a result there were flies present all through shooting. The closing titles features flies as a tribute to the fly-ridden production.”

Climate change is driving up extreme heat events, putting workers at risk: here's the response in Florida:

Florida passes ‘cruel’ bill curbing water and shade protections for workers

"Industry pressure has led state to prevent any city, county or municipality from adopting laborer protections amid extreme heat"

I'm no public health expert, but I have always been taught that PREVENTION was to avoid having to treat a problem. (ie, rather than breaking your leg then treating it, try not to break your leg in the first place). 🤔 (CDC webpage on COVID-19, flu, RSV below). https://www.cdc.gov/respiratory-viruses/guidance/respiratory-virus-guidance.html?ACSTrackingID=USCDC_2067-DM123864&ACSTrackingLabel=CDC%20Updates%20and%20Simplifies%20Respiratory%20Virus%20Recommendations&deliveryName=USCDC_2067-DM123864

Not really. Double glazing creates a small air gap between the panes, which makes insulation better. Even small daily shaking breaks the seals and ruins that effect.
My house is 70 years old and the EQ damage is mostly little hairline cracks to the plaster. Raised foundation/wood frame, it rides the waves pretty well.

Today's home disaster repair task: switched out the appliance hoses to the washing machine, from old rubber to new stainless steel braided hoses. Did you know they recommend changing these every 5 years?! (Mine were original to this 1990's era washing machine).

The tops of IKEA LACK tables are made of corrugated cardboard covered with a melamine foil coated layer of particleboard. The legs are hollow.

None of this withstands water damage.
