HeliaXyana

@HeliaXyana@mastodon.nl

I am an eclectic witchy wordsmith crafting enchantments through fantasy novels. Beyond quills and keyboards, I unleash my creativity on illustrations and visual art and dabble in the mystiques of Linux-y things.

I am Dutch and dyslexic. While I do my best to minimize errors, please forgive me for the occasional slip-up.

I wonder what tense you've all chosen to write in and why.

I know past tense is likely the most common, but I have experimented with both and decided that present tense offers more direct immersion for my purposes.
This also ties into who the narrator is. In my WIP, it is a person in the room invisibly tagging along with the MC.

How did you decide, and is it reflected in the identity of the narrator?

Please help.

I am looking for the most privacy friendly way to buy ebooks.

Every shop and platform I've looked at would index and sell my purchase and a lot of other information.

I can get my ebooks in different ways but I explicitly want to pay the author for their work without me and my behavior ending up a resell product for which ever platform I use to complete this purchase.

Any ideas?

Wondering if I'm alone on this:

When I casually read my work while, for example, being on holiday, I take notes on my e-reader, but I can sometimes find an error I can not tolerate and have to fix it as soon as possible.
I can't think of anything else until I do.

Now, is that just me, or have you ever had to drop everything to fix an error in your writing as soon as possible?

Freya has no idea how many times she stepped into her two-year-old self to reset reality.

This made me wonder: Do your characters know and remember all their time travel adventures?

12 grammar/typography

I blend colloquialism in dialogues with a strict narrative style.

My long sentences includes detailed, immersive descriptions.

I prefer an archaic style but I'm unafraid of breaking grammar rules.

I use active voice for enhanced immersion and vary dialogue setup on context.

I don’t adhere to specific style guides but focus on readability.

I boldly split infinitives and usually write in OpenDyslexic, but export in Merriweather.

292 MC POV: What is your biggest fear?

Being unable to avoid reality from falling apart and so losing everyone and everything I love to the unfeeling void of nothingness as my consciousness lingers on for eternity alone and shapeless until the memory of my loves and life is nothing but a distant faded echo in a language I no longer comprehend. Also evil sockpuppets.

HeliaXyana,
@HeliaXyana@mastodon.nl avatar

@sfwrtr

Deep down, that is her actual fear. Becoming an abstract entity with a consciousness floating around in nothing, losing everything as it slowly fades from her over aeons.

22 Whatever

Could a character in your story kill their own grandparents?

In my story, the characters become detached from the time stream during such events, meaning they exist but have never been born.

23 First ever story

I did not always write but I told stories while pretending to read a book to my friends when I was little. Earliest one I can remember was about a witch that had lost her teeth and now tries every tiny white pebble she can find to see if it fits. I did not understand why it freaked my class mates out as much as it did. I never said she was mean. She just cast a spell a bit wrong and her teeth walked out of her mouth while she was sleeping.

235 — MC childhood nicknames 2/2

What I like most about her name is that all in Ethereal who identify as female adhere to their mother’s first name as their last name. Officially her entire name is also every mother that came before her, finishing with her birth coven. So, she is “Freya Ophelia Esmee Pilna Actrea of the Seven Star Coven”

Any else put some unconventional naming conventions in their world building?

I'm making some today. I will never not refer to my ice cream maker as "The Mighty Cauldron of Cold".

Now what is the vegan equivalent of "Eye of Newt"?

250 Does your SC have next-door neighbors?

One day, Castus comes to Freya to ask if he looks malnourished. He doesn’t, but he asks because all his neighbours keep bringing him food. He trains his combat and magic skills in the back garden every early morning and usually does so in just his underwear. He’s rather fit, and his lovely posh neighbour ladies very much enjoy the show. However, he is very gay and absolutely endearingly oblivious.

8 What food does your MC associate with home?

For Freya, it's pumpkin soup. Home is where a giant bubbling cauldron of soup is available throughout the day.

She loves the pumpkin soup because they grow all ingredients in the garden themselves. After a summer of tending the plants together, cooking them up feels meaningful and unifying. To Freya, a good soup feels akin to a warm embrace from the inside out.

7 Disabilities in your story

  • Misha is blind but can still see ghosts.

  • Kritea is deaf but a pianist. She sees and feels the reverberation of sound from her piano.

  • Xavier’s voice hurts him, so he only speaks sign language.

  • Orin and his fellow elite fighters are all blind.

  • Zonasius is missing his lower left leg but has invented an arsenal of prosthetics that inspired him to create a set of wings. Isn’t he glorious?

27 Who's blaming who in your story?

The wealthy are blaming the re-emerging witch cultures for anything bad as they are a direct threat to societal hierarchy.

Most of the kingdom is getting pretty fed up with the blatant attempt at scapegoating, but there are still large groups who really want to believe it. They're tempted into such a belief by the wealth dangled in front of them like a carrot in front of a donkey.

300 — How does your MC or SC react to change? Do they struggle to adjust or go with the flow?

Dionysus reacts the most heavily to change, especially when he's younger. He never had much as a child and is aware that he needs the other Rascals to feel that he can take on whatever fates throw his way. If anything in the dynamic changes, he gets uneasy and scared to the point where he gets frustrated and angry until the others notice and find a way to reassure him.
