Henrysbridge

@Henrysbridge@toot.wales

Reincarnated immigrant to the Land of Hywel Dda west of Offa's Dyke.

Physicist, rationalist and humanist.

Here just for humour and to learn Welsh. No drama please, especially since I'm far from perfect.

Diolch everybody for making me feel at home.

Jam is still always first!

The fact that the current Senedd and Scottish Parliament administrations are turning in on themselves with internal problems isn't helping. Their first duties are to the people of Wales and Scotland.

On the progressive left, Greens (UK wide) and in Wales and Scotland Plaid Cymru and SNP respectively. You could also include the Liberal Democrats but they have "some issues". On the right, Reform (the latest incarnation of Farage's ego). Numerous other minor parties and "independent" candidates usually standing on local issues

The UK-wide system is heavily weighted against these.

@ChrisWere It's an odd one. The absolute net zero 0f 2045 still stands, I understand, but the cutting by 75% by 2030 is abandoned. Will they keep kicking that can down the road and suddenly discover they have one year left to ditch all carbon?

Fifty years ago today, the Carnation Revolution took place in Portugal.

The event managed to overthrow the authoritarian regime, led to the restoration of democracy and built the democratic Portugal we know today.

Too true. The closest I had at secondary school was a couple of weeks on the American Civil War, but no real analysis of the reasons and consequences.

Love this from @theferret

Tuesday marked St. George's Day, the annual celebration of the patron saint of England, Georgia, Portugal, Russia and Catalonia.

Now everyone has different ways of honouring this venerable figure. In Catalonia, the day is honoured through the exchange of flowers and books, while in Bulgaria, feasting and parades mark St George.

In London this year, some people took a different approach, and celebrated their patron saint by brawling with police officers.

Don't interfere with the arms trade, serfs.

Netpol: "The National Security Act 2023 introduced to counter "malign activity undertaken by foreign actors" created a new offence of entering a "prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK". It was always open to abuse - and now a gate of an Elbit arms facility has this warning" 👇

@fkamiah17
The following is in no way approving the approach shown - merely applying logic.

From a govt perspective, the better wording would be "That conduct is prejudicial to the safety and interests of the UK as determined by parliament" - ie, "we say what is in the interests etc..."

The wording as given gives the "perpetrator" the defence that they considered themselves acting in the interests etc etc.

Poor legislation (from a govt perspective). Why am I not surprised?

@fkamiah17 "approaches or is in the vicinity of" That seems very open to interpretation! 1 m? 10 m? 100 m? in the same country as?

As for b, I can see a lot of lawyers having fun with that!

Edit - in (a) "inspects". This is "looking at me in a funny way" territory!

"I'm here to support my daughter. She's studying here. They're protesting against a genocide and that's why I'm against [it]. My daughter started organising to support Palestine, so we're here because we want the genocide to stop. [LAPD] are threatening arrest if we don't leave, but the kids are so brave I thought, as a father, I should be here. If the police arrest me now, I'm willing to go with them, because we're doing the right thing." 💖 ✊

I think this is very interesting. A "simulation" of the current Senedd under various election models.
None of the models (Additional Member, Single Transferrable Vote and List PR) shift the "dial" much. Not sure what this says about the systems or voting patterns. Any thoughts anybody?
