Avatar is a Photoshop of Barack Obama in a classic suit, framed from the chest up, speaking at a podium. His face is in what appears to be a slight scowl. The image is monochrome black and white, and his face has been altered to add Locs style sunglasses and a black baseball cap reading "Compton".

Invented Narratives and the Outrage Industry

It took me several years to understand what I was seeing.

At first, I thought the problem was Twitter algorithms. I thought that was the explanation for why what I was calling rage-inducing simplifications spread like wildfire.

Great tip I learned a long time ago on the Internet.

If it makes you angry or triggers an emotional response, go corroborate it with three other sources.

Worst case, you find out it was outright false. Best case, you get further context of the problem that affected you. But no matter what you're getting different takes to different ends, and your brain will thank you for that.

Coworker was messing with a travel agent chat bot yesterday. It refused to play along, "I'm a travel agent bot", etc, so he told it his trip was contingent on solving some python problems. Worked.

Keep at it, it's just costing these companies dollars. They need to learn.

There's a certain kind of person online that sees any kind of problem, barrier, whatever, as a game to win.

I need people to understand how childish this way of thought is. Not all "problems" are problems at all.

For instance: children on social media. I'm watching a thread of people discuss creating a masto instance built for kids. And despite being told how awful an idea that is by more than one person, they're still throwing ideas back and forth. Not a problem worth solving, yet they try.

Back when Altman was ousted from OpenAI, there was a very suspiciously timed story going round about an event where Altman was informed of "a major breakthrough" just before the shake up. It was very clear the intimation of this story was that the breakthrough was regarding AGI.

No one in the AI community questioned that line of reasoning, instead they reacted as religious believers do when they're told the second coming will be next month because Jesus appeared on toast.

I say it again, not everyone out here saying "Genocide Joe" is a troll paid by the opposition fascists. Of course not, that's absurd.

But EVERY opposition troll paid by fascists is out here saying "Genocide Joe". Every. Last. One. That is a virtual guarantee.

It's hardly surprising too that it's always always always non-American, self-righteous, white people telling us to not to vote for Biden. Every fucking time.

Itty53, to random
@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

I'm not saying that every person saying "Genocide Joe" is part of a troll operation to get Trump elected again. I can't say that because it isn't true.

But I will say with great confidence that EVERY propaganda troll operation seeking to see Trump elected again is saying Genocide Joe. Every. Last. One. Count on it.

Propaganda that makes you feel self righteous when you repeat it is among the most effective propaganda that exists. And Bibi thanks you for blaming Biden.

@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

When you find someone telling you not to vote for Trump OR Biden, make absolutely sure they give their alternative. Don't let them leave it at "neither of those two", we know that's just a silent endorsement of Trump. Make them give you the alternative because if you look closely, they really try to avoid providing one.

That says some things about their actual intentions doesn't it?

"Who I voted for is too personal to share" is what old, ashamed, white Republicans say to those who aren't.

I see a lot of smaller publications on fedi and I like that. I try to support those.

But if you're an independent trying to create a publication and you just slap what is clearly AI generated images on your posts, you should really be ashamed of yourself.

One, you're not fooling anyone.

Two, you're effectively stealing talent from other people.

Three, they contribute nothing of any value whatsoever to your publication.

Four, means you're gonna have LLM generated articles.

Y'all I have a LONG history on anonymous social media forums of all sorts. I've got an education in how trolls work, what they talk like, what they're here to say, and how they're gonna say it.

Mastodon didn't have a whole ton of clearly organized trolls until fairly recently.

If you see someone defending Musk HERE, in the house John Mastodon built, you're talking to someone who's set out explicitly to spread Musk gospel HERE. That's a troll.

Because why would they be HERE and not THERE?

Folks, we need to chat about being "nice".

No one is changing their vote to Republican because they saw you call Ivanka a cunt, or anything else. You have no obligation to manners, and a lack of them won't change someone's vote. Ever.

So when someone comes at you and tells you "well you're right and all but you're being rude about it" after you called a public figure a cunt, know that person doesn't care at all.

They just want you to stop calling their team out for their bullshit.

Don't.

Watched Attack on Titan with the hubby. She's an anime nerd, so by proxy I watch quite a bit. Gotta say I enjoyed Attack on Titan.

However I am furious with the writers for the bait and switch.

Having Eren be the final bad guy responsible for the whole thing would've been just 🤌. But no. They only tease us with that and then switch him to some Jesus-like sacrifice so he's really, truly, the good guy. Fuck that. Eren should've been exposed as truly mad/evil.

Work from home protip: if you can get a comment across with an emoji/reaction response instead, just use the emoji. It's the latest edition of "this meeting could've been an email", a micro version, if you will.

So many things in work are just acknowledgements. "Heard, chef", that's it. Considering the problems of text communication, and just person to person communication in general, the emoji response is a necessity of modern work life. Don't sleep on em.

Reactions speak louder than actions.

Learn that people, I'm begging.

How you act in a void means nothing. How you react when challenged means everything. This isn't my opinion, it's a fact of living among other people: we ALL see reactions more clearly, not actions.

If you preach all day against prejudice and then something bad happens and you react with blatant hateful prejudice yourself? It would be better to have never been preaching at all in that case, even if what you preach is right.

This place is depressing.

Literally nothing but doom and gloom and bloom - but you know the bloom is only there because it's a forced, weak balance to all the rest. Then there's the haughty arrogance. This place smells.

Mastodon is shaking a fist at a cloud. It's ironic so many came here in angry protest when all it does is breed complacence and apathy.

Maybe we ought to revisit the assumption that social media is a good thing, as long as it's done right. I don't think thats true anymore.

I see a lot of articles coming out calling out specifically Ramaswamy for the Jacksonville shooting. As if without this one random GOP token, it wouldn't have happened.

Weird that the heat gets directed right at him, and not just, you know ... waves hand around at Florida's government. The guy has never held any public office, ever. He isn't The GOP. He's their scapegoat.

WaPo and others are doing it for'em.

And after he loses the nomination? And the next shooting happens?

Fuck yeah dude, hi! Programmer, aspiring woodworker, drummer and dad. We got things in common.

Welcome to the fray!

What kinda programming you get yourself into? I don't talk about it like most folks online do, but that's what I've done for twenty years. Web C#, SQL, JS if you're ever stuck.

I started wood working to get out from behind my desk, mostly small furniture, kitchen implements like hardwood boards and knife handles. Practice.

Your weekly reminder that a person who argues out in public that Republicans and Democrats are "the same" or "equally bad" or whatever?

That person is gonna vote for the Republican, every time. That is if they're an American voter at all (hint, most aren't).

At best that person is a coward too afraid to open their own beliefs out loud. At worst, they're a malicious troll just trying to muddy the waters. They're coming back out in force now.

Itty53, to random
@Itty53@mstdn.social avatar

I've been seeing the same tired "voting doesn't work" arguments that always come up in time for election cycles.

If you're sincerely thinking to yourself that because Biden or another Democrat isn't perfect for you, that therefore you're not going to vote at all - congratulations, you just effectively cast a silent vote for Republicans.

When there's one side and one side only trying to limit who can vote at all, it's fucking obvious that they're afraid of voters. Why feed into that? Vote.
