Actually, Jesus would support free health care, lodging, & sanctuary to all who seek it, you pathetic disgusting gaslighting hypocritical fake Christian quisling.

Itty53,

@theusasingers

Jesus once was asked by a crowd, "this blind man has lived his whole life blind, was it his sin or his parents' sins that caused his blindness" and Jesus told them in so many words, neither, he was blind so that you could witness me heal him, then he healed him.

If you take him at his word, Jesus only cares about eternity. Not your mortal life.

I'm begging you: stop using Jesus to promote progressive ideas. It just reinforces his use by conservatives as a political football.

lol, I just purchased an old game which has been released on Steam for the first time, which I know hasn't worked for some time due to a limit around not supporting multi core CPUs - I wanted to see how they got around it since the studio is closed.

How the publisher got around it - they use a cracked version of the game which has a fix added on, lol. I might write this up.

1 billion = 100,000* x 1,000,000
because Americans make up their fucking maths as they see fit.

so fuck american billionaires and their imaginary numbers

billionaires have no right to exist. tax the shit out of them. RETROACTIVELY.

(*Americans consider that a billion while 1 million millions is what a billion used to be. fuck this gringo math.)

Itty53,

@blogdiva

A billion is one thousand millions. Used to be that the English / UK word billion did mean "1 million millions". But that's largely not used in statistics anymore, just the American billion.

When we say billionaire we mean someone who has one thousand millions or more, not one million millions.

We all knew this, of course but had nothing - no evidence of voter fraud whatsoever.

Yet harped on about them so much, ~40% of America to this day believes that there was voter fraud in the 2020 election.

We have internalised the maxim "there's no smoke without fire" and it's utter bollocks. I never want to hear that phrase again.

Itty53,

@BonehouseWasps

I still don't buy the "40% of Americans believe there was fraud" datum. Problem is their polling is awful and always has been. Why would this figure be accurate?

It isn't. Polling isn't for finding the beliefs of the many, it's for seeding them. Polls aren't about finding opinions, they're about manipulating them.

Self pay gas station pumps couldn’t accept payments in New Zealand yesterday because their code couldn’t handle February 29th, a leap day.

I feel like you have to go out of your way to have a bug like this in your system given standard date libraries.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/leap-year-glitch-broke-self-pay-pumps-across-new-zealand-for-over-10-hours/

Itty53,

@coder4hire @carnage4life

For some industries it's imperative, sure, but a POS gas pump? Video game crashing? No one's gonna complain too hard, they'll just go somewhere else.

Vulnerabilities are built on this kind of laziness though, you're right. But the same rule applies to attackers. Why spend all your energy on a vuln that's only open 24 hours every four years? Target, timing, capacity for things to change in four years etc makes it unreasonable.

Itty53,

@carnage4life

It's an intermittent problem that resolves itself within 24 hours every four years. Which is longer than the tenure of most developers at any given company.

When described like that, it's really easy to see why that happens a lot: There's zero incentive for them to fix those issues.

Coworker summed it up yesterday: every leap day problem ends the same way the following day, "dev: can't reproduce".

Your reminder

In 2016 Russia financed a series of ads along with an army of upvote bots. The intent was to divide america further from all angles

The senate intelligence committee released the following ads from Russia linked actors

These are from accounts with names like Blacktivists, Back the Badge, Secure Borders, Army of Jesus and so on. Every division covered

We’re heading into 2024. If you see a political ad trying to provoke you: mistrust it.

1/3)

Russian add posted to American social media, claiming to be against police brutality, but linked to a group that made divisions run deeper
Russian, financed political ad full of Islamophobia depicting women walking on the street and wearing a Burqa as evil somehow

Preach. I live in California. I vote for tax increases on myself all the time. I'm just an adult with responsibilities beyond myself, so I'm sorry Mx. Anarchist, but I can't pencil in your revolution this week. I got mouths to feed.

These pricks will encourage violence lazily from a trash pile and wont even do the bare minimum they can do as a citizen and just fucking vote. Takes so little effort. That's why we know they'll never amount to anything but propaganda.

Itty53,

@flexghost

I've been seeing a big uptick in the far left, anarchist group on mastadon, especially with the message "Democrats are the exact same as Republicans, don't vote for either". It's transparent.

Call these bad actors out. Do not let that message by unchecked.

Itty53,

@WolfChristensen @flexghost

Yes because climate change policies are about your family specifically, right? Not how society works.

You want perfect, it doesn't exist. We won't find it. We vote for the better option. If you're voting third party, we know statistically that only benefits Republicans. If you're not even willing to vote at all, same thing. ONE party doesn't want people voting. Just one. Why are you so willing to promote one of their most effective messages? You help them alone.

Itty53,

@flexghost

Tankies are one thing. But I'm talking about tankies who literally post one message and one message only, "Republicans and Democrats are the same". Post after post after post, nothing but that.

That's not actually a tankie or even a political ideology at all. That's just someone calling themselves an anarchist to align left and then repeating a hard right wing talking point.

On this platform you're unlikely to see many far right trolls. They're gonna present as leftists here.

I don't care what Trump's height and weight is. At all. I care that he was allowed to lie on his prison intake form.

We just can't stop giving him special treatment. Even for things as silly and inconsequential as this.

Itty53,

@mekkaokereke

Every time I've been booked, I've never been asked my weight. They just pulled it off my ID. Which isn't accurate. My ID gives my weight as 135, which is what I weighed at like 22. I'm over 160 now, but there are no federal officers banging down my door to update my license.

I think that even you called this out preemptively as trivial is proof positive that yeah, it is. Trivial and irrelevant.

Fuck Trump, but what's his weight got to do with anything? It doesn't. Nothing.

How do I tell my undergrad students in my class this semester that I have ADHD and can basically never handle folks showing up at random times outside of planned meeting hours because I can't handle that much task switching

Itty53,

@TaliaRinger

You don't owe anyone an explanation. But you can just tell them that you value their time and expect them to value yours, therefore make schedules and stick to them, because that's what you're going to do.

That's why scheduled appearances are so important in life, it expresses respect. If they don't know that lesson yet, it costs nothing to teach it to them. If they show up off schedule, you're busy respecting the time of others. Can't do it, sorry. Reschedule.

Itty53,

@angiebaby @BlackAzizAnansi

I hate the idea that calling Twitter Twitter is deadnaming at all. Corporations aren't people. Corporations don't deserve the same respect and regard that all people deserve. Corporations cannot be offended, so it's paradoxical to worry about sensibilities: there are none. Corporations are inherently at odds with each other, so even among corporations, there's no imperative for respect.

helenczerski, to science

Well. "Open sesame" is actually a thing.

Just googled where sesame seeds come from (it never occurred to me to ask before) and found that they grow in pods that are hung upside down to ripen until they burst open and release their seeds. The treasure is revealed.

https://awkwardbotany.com/2022/03/30/dispersal-by-open-sesame/

Itty53,

@helenczerski

The alternate theory is that "sesame" was a bastardized form of the Talmud, šem-šāmayīm, or "in the name of heaven".

But what I find most intriguing is the likelihood that the phrase was a play on words referring to both. Oil has been seen as godly since time immemorial, sesame is the oldest oil crop to humanity. It's why sesame was seen as treasure at all. Even the word anoint just means to mark with oil, and think of how we use that word.

Etymology is great fun.
