Let's put people back in control of their technology. The Fediverse is a good start. Also wondering aloud where we are taking this planet.

Regardless what you think of "Web3" and DAOs, it's interesting to read about the new legal form Wyoming just created.

I wonder what average lifetime of a Fediverse handle is. Compared to an e-mail address, and handles on other social media systems.

I suspect it is much shorter. How much of this might be intentional vs inadvertent?

Examples: firefish.social disappearing. Moderation policies on a server changing. People trying out the Fediverse and only settling on a place after some trial and error.

What can we do to make this process as smooth as possible?

What is and isn't acceptable for businesses to do in the ?

Lots of opinions, many strongly held. The fact of the matter, of course, is that businesses are connecting to the Fediverse, from news organizations to Meta and everything in between.

Would be useful to come up with a set of acceptable things to do for businesses and unacceptable ones. Or maybe a scale.

I want to run a session on this next week, and brainstorm with you all.

I'm observing the community has some work to do to promote the consistent use of Fediverse user handles.

I'm going through the registrations for , and note that attendees use all sorts of variations on their handles, including @user, user@server, https://server/@user and @user (???)

I would guess that attendees at FediForum tend to be more knowledgeable about the Fediverse than the average user, so it seems safe to say that the world is confused about fediverse handles.

Not a question you hear discussed very often.

Burn OS to USB stick.

Of course it boots ... if it is Linux.
Of course it doesn't boot ... if it is Windows.

Same machine, same USB stick, same slot.

Argh.

Also, I wonder whether there is a Threat scenario of "compelled transfer" where @DTinitiative -style infrastructure could be used by a powerful actor (say a state) to force users to transfer/copy their data from a more protected location to a less protected location.

Numerous potential examples we can think of, from international to US-domestic.

What better to do with the time than reading through @DTinitiative 's "third-party trust model

transfers" report?

“One of the architects of the DMA, German MEP Andreas Schwab, has said that Apple’s actions amount to the company effectively asking to be the first gatekeeper to be sanctioned under the new [Digital Markets Act]”

I wonder how this is going to develop…

So why did , when they decided to make a splash in the Fediverse (as opposed to when they undecided and withdrew) not simply "acquire" (as far as one can in the open-source world) ? Or at least pay @Gargron a nice salary and add people to his team?

Because they certainly would have more to show for their investment than they do now. And it would have helped the , too.

So is doing developer grants, even if very small ones. $500-$2000/project, $10k total. One thing that having a funded project lets you do.

Great interview with @nilaypatel, very worthwhile and and enthusiastic.

What is a good graphic that visualizes how / the works?

This one seems to be the most commonly used, and while it's not wrong, it looks like it was created to explain one particular aspect (inboxes and outboxes) but that seems more like a technical detail than something that has high-level explanatory value.

One guy is old and maybe boring.

The other guy is clinically demented and his staff is on drugs.

That’s not counting the other mental illness, being in the pocket of unfriendly governments, the fascism, the racism, the sexism, the disinterest in the job, the sheer incompetence and ignorance, being almost as old, and, oh, allegedly about a hundred felonies.

Hard to choose, huh! /s

OH on Threads: “DINO — decentralized in name only”. Interesting concept.

Whether it will apply to or not we can’t tell yet imho but I wonder whether it would make sense to come up with a list of criteria a product/service would have to meet to be DINO or not be DINO.

Today’s possibly impossible project. Un-hairball the 3D printer.
Left it printing for a couple of hours without looking and that’s what I got.
Hard to see how I can remove this blob without destroying crucial parts. Some wires went already. The built in heater doesn’t heat the plastic that far away, and the hair dryer I tried isn’t hot enough. Sigh.

“Supreme Court questions Florida and Texas social media laws on First Amendment grounds”
This is interesting, and quite a tough knot. Add the fediverse into the mix, where there is no “social media platform” per se, but where non-social companies might expose fediverse endpoints, and I have no idea where that leaves us.
