Washed out a bucket in the backyard today. By the time I was back 10min later to refill it, a spider was merrily weaving a web across the top.

A strategic mis-assessment of the situation, dear spider.

Help, the Bok Choi is growing much faster than I want to eat the same recipe over and over again. What else can we do with it?

I created an account on post.news a long time ago but never used it. Now, with the pending shutdown, I took another look.

It's striking that it basically looks like Mastodon. Plus a few extra features like payments.

Why did they not implement this as an add-on to, or fork of, Mastodon?

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@katanova I have not done the analysis for how exactly I would do that in the Mastodon world, or what exactly post.news has been doing. But it seems to me that hacking up a single Mastodon instance to do basically the same thing should have been possible, whether the federation only gets shortened posts or something in the first step.

RIP Z80. May your opcodes live forever in our hearts.

(The Z80 was the second microprocessor I ever wrote Assembly to target – the 6502 being the first.)

@jackwilliambell I learned assembly on a Z80. Hand-translated assembly that is because I couldn’t afford buying an assembler … but I had a disassembler! Which I got by typing it in (yes!) in hex that was published in a book!!

The problem with building a closed social network is that it sets up an all or nothing premise for users. They might like some of the signature features but they'll leave if there's not enough people to network with. That's a shame and a huge barrier to innovation and new social products.

The changes that forever. People can now use the features they like from a mix of apps across a common network of people. This means we can take a whole new approach to how "social" and "media" should work including discovery, user experience and monetization that will be far healthier than anything we've had in the past.

@mike @mpesce @evan @tchambers We are working on something like that at @dazzle . (PS: did my first 3D prototyping back then based on your book!!)

There were two other sessions on the at Internet Identity Workshop this week. One by me, on Identity in the Fediverse and one by @dmitri on Data Portability.

To my surprise, many attendees were not or only very marginally aware of the Fediverse. We need to communicate what it is and why it matters much more broadly than we have so far, apparently.

We tried the zoom AI assistant today at work in a meeting.

The summary it sent to the meeting owner afterwards looks really quite good.

Stunning, actually.

BUT

In some places, just factually wrong about what we said. Frustrating. If it doesn't summarize meetings better than 90% then it has a lot less value. Especially in a technical meeting like this where specific decisions/conclusions are made.

It's a great way to get someone who is creating meeting notes/minutes started... but by itself, its almost worse than having no notes at all. I think if we were discussing more generic topics it might have done "better". But on this highly technical discussion with lots of unmentioned context... not so much.

I think this is true of almost all AI applications I've seen recently.

Still, fascinating.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

@gwachob it’s a bit like a breach. It’s bad if they delete you data, but perhaps worse if they slightly alter your data in places.

During college, when my EE internship placed me in a manufacturing line job that was somewhat repetitive (not very repetitive as repetitive goes though), on the second day, I distinctly remember I felt like my brain was dying. It was not a good feeling.

So can confirm.

Fortunately, my manager saw sense and made me write some Turbo Pascal instead the day after.

An entrepreneur -- who doesn't yet want to be publicly identified -- ran a session here at why he's pivoting his company out of the Self-sovereign Identity / Verifiable Credential space after years of trying to make a business there.

It was extremely interesting and I hope he will publish his lessons learned both for the community and any new technology market really that has similar challenges.

P.S. Much resonated with my reasons why I never got deep into SSI myself.
