Finally I'm getting around to listen to @mike 's Dot.Social episode with @rklambo and @pcottle from #meta, talking about #threads.

Mike asks the most important question first: "why are you [Meta] doing this [Fediverse integration]?"

[cont]

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Mike: what are the next steps?

Rachel: first milestone was the publish out from Threads.

2nd and next: get engagement from the fediverse back into threads ie comments and likes etc

3rd: follow people from the fediverse in Threads.

And that, I believe, is the real reason is implementing : So that they can cross-post across all their apps, such as from to , without running afoul of antitrust law specifically in the EU.

@Sarahp here has a piece on that cross-posting, although she does not mention ActivityPub. (Which they may or may not use for that purpose between their own apps .. whether they do is not really important)

“the open source social web (aka the fediverse)”.

Hmm, not sure what to think about that description. I see the appeal but do we want to stretch “open source” all the way to include closed implementations of open protocols?

From a headline in about .

So there's a new Twitter-like mobile app called that promises (Yea, I know) to integrate with the Fediverse real soon.

Assuming it happens, all the innovation happening in the is great to see.

Discussing Embrace-Extend-and-Extinguish, @Gargron on @mike's podcast uses as a historical analogy of how things can go wrong. He points out that XMPP had some self-inflicted problems, eg that the standard did not support new, desirable features quickly enough, like stickers in chat.

I hope we won't get the same problem in the . was created in 2018 and there is currently no W3C standards activity.

Maybe Mastodon could come back to W3C and help re-energize?

Anybody know what triggers a profile re-fetch in ?

After an instance accessed a remote account for the first time, it fetches name, avatar, number of followers etc. When will it fetch it next to potentially update?

We need a better framework for how to think about online relationships between people, and between people and organizations/websites. Logged on/off from a authentication perspective and follow/block from a social media perspective are really not quite right and not at all complete.

We did a bit of work on this when I was on the board of what was still called the Me2B Alliance, and of course there is seminal work by Doc Searls in ProjectVRM, but much remains to be done. The social web needs it!

Also, why aren't Wikis -enabled by default? I'd really like to follow certain articles on , for example.

If you must, it could be following something like @Fediverse but interpreting the actual URL to the article like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse as the actor's primary identifier would be so much better. Well, either would be better than not being able to follow at all...

The is like a startup in many ways.

Some days you are totally elated about all the amazing things that are becoming possible and within reach. We are changing the world!

Some other days you are in the depth of despair that this is never going to work and how could you possibly ever have thought otherwise.

This week definitely is the former. A movement is forming, good people are coming out of hiding and are getting excited and involved. So glad to be part of it!!

There were two other sessions on the at Internet Identity Workshop this week. One by me, on Identity in the Fediverse and one by @dmitri on Data Portability.

To my surprise, many attendees were not or only very marginally aware of the Fediverse. We need to communicate what it is and why it matters much more broadly than we have so far, apparently.
