@paisley_peinforte yeah! It wasn’t but I just turned it on. When does it trigger exactly? 😰 I thought "anyway" would do it so I tried reposting my comment
This evening, out of the blue, my 11yo asked how his mom and I would “handle it” if he were gay.
I told him, obviously, that it wouldn’t matter and we love him with all our hearts no matter what.
I don’t know if he’s gay (he’s 11 and never given any indication of romantic attraction to anyone), but I’m vaguely concerned about his choice of language for “handle it” like it would be a burden or something.
I don’t want to make a big deal of it but we’ll talk more tomorrow.
@lorddimwit I just would highlight it’s a good sign he feels comfortable to ask that.
Using that phrasing and asking the question could be because he has heard of someone else’s parents not “handling it” well recently. Idk of course just a random thought.
I think humans can hibernate, it's just that no one's tried hard enough to eat their own weight in acorns [snap zoom out, distant shouting from oak tree] UNTIL NOW
I’ve seen some incredible pieces of MFM art by @MariaTheMartian and others on this server.
Im just a programmer not an artist, and it is definitely art that is produced with it. But I would describe MFM as a markup language. It’s a lot like LaTeX or Markdown but much more fun.
absolutely fascinated that new people on #lemmy are having their own reddit migration, and are calling it as such. Beehaw is seeing a pretty big inflow of users, and currently have to limit signups. Ofcourse nothing comparable in numbers to the twitter migration, but just seeing the idea being picked up and replicated of 'big-tech-migration' is interesting.
my wild bet is that we'll probably see a goodreads migration (probs 2024?) as well at some point.
@laurenshof I signed up on Beehaw and am also checking out other Reddit alternatives. I joined Mastodon as part of the Twitter migration times but had abandoned Twitter long ago. This migration means much more to me because I currently use Reddit (through Apollo on IOS) all the time.
I hope Apollo gets reworked to work with Lemmy backends.
@caranmegil I would love to find a good one so if it's good plz hit me up. I fully believe it's achievable ive had some good NA beers but not wine yet.
Mastodon already has algorithms, but most people don’t think about it in that sense.
There’s Home, Local, and Global feeds—all reverse chronological. However, you can also apply filters to these feeds.
There’s also a “Trending” feed in the Explore section. This is not reverse chronological, but shows popular posts that are recent.
You can also follow hashtags and build lists. These features build algorithmic relevancy.
What people usually mean when they say “algorithms” is a black box algorithm for which the social network decides relevancy for you. I’m not in favour of that kind of algorithm.
@TimWardCam@atomicpoet it’s been a few years since I was taught or looked up the formal definition but how can this be right? isn’t the halting problem about how it is difficult to prove all algorithms terminate? A better definition would be an explicit set of procedures or something. Termination is a desirable but not guaranteed property, no?
The most epic content volley has begun. Here is my Medium post about my first Mastodon post. In another new post back where it started. Before you check to see if I am kidding - can anyone explain in a sentence or two what an instance is? Thank you! I will get the hang of it.
@LoriBrown Thanks for checking it out Lori. I look forward to reading your Medium post.
Not to overwhem you as you learn about the ActivityPub Fediverse, but I also recommend you check out Calckey. It is like Mastodon but allows for long form posts like Medium, and has other amazing features like channels, galleries, antenna (saved searches) and text art called MFM. It's incredible. You can read about it at Calckey.org and try it at Calckey.social or Calckey.world
@kristian I would love to listen first of all. Second I would suggest doing it like Svelte radio does and highlight creators or significant software / features. Idk! But would love to be a listener
