Hey there folks, let’s have another friendly chat about calckey.social!

I’ve mentioned it before, but just to clarify, I’m not the one taking care of the nitty-gritty backend stuff of calckey.social - that’s all been the Herculean task of our superstar @kainoa.

They’ve really been giving it their all to keep the wheels of calckey.social turning. It’s not always been a walk in the park, though. Over the past few months, @kainoa has been tackling a few pesky database issues with determination and grit. Just last night, they stayed up all night working on a database migration, but as sometimes happens, things didn’t go quite as planned.

In light of this, I’d love it if we could all give @kainoa a bit of breathing room for the next few days. We’ve had some ups and downs with the uptime, and although it’s not ideal, it’s important to remember that @kainoa is volunteering their time and energy to this project. After their late-night coding marathon, they could really use a break.

So, where do we go from here, you might be asking? Well, I’m in the midst of linking up @kainoa with a few database whizzes who have some clever thoughts on how to sort out the key issues we’ve been facing. Fingers crossed, if things go well in the coming week, they’ll be working alongside @kainoa to fine-tune the system and get calckey.social back on steady ground.

For the time being, it would be a big help if we could steer clear of using calckey.social for any super important stuff. I’ve temporarily hit pause on new registrations, and won’t be dishing out any invite codes for a bit. We won’t have everything patched up in a day - it might take a tad longer than a week.

Above all, let’s remember to be gentle with @kainoa. This project is a true labor of love for them, and they deserve all the support we can give. Thanks for your understanding, and cheers to brighter days ahead for calckey.social!

When an app asks for permissions, the OS should not only let you answer yes or no. Every category should have a "yes, but feed the app fake data" option.

Want my contacts for no reason? Have these generated fake ones! Wanna listen to my microphone? Here's random ambiance sounds! Location? I'm on a tiny 5x5m island!

Hell yeah! Put it all in your databases mfers!

Actively punishing services wins over boycotts any day. Didn't want that junk in the database? Don't ask for it!

There’s a lot of takes in “why won’t people leave X platform”

And “why are people in new X platform’

that should be “why CAN’T some people leave x or y platform “

Mainstream is a toy for some. The poorer you are, the more you are trying to be independent of capitalism with no support?

The more you need platforms where people already are.

I know a lady who got solvent via social. A year later she still can't afford ads.

So, my data science friends, this is currently happening on Threads. It is vile. But also two thoughts:

    (1) Remember when so many of you complained that Mastodon is broken because quote posts aren't enabled and I (and others) tried to explain that the problem is that they are used to harass? Here it is. Day 1 on Threads.

    (2) If you're inclined to post on here making light of the situation? I'll probably be muting you. Sorry. But this isn't a game.

Human beings were never meant to be on a single social media platform for life. Archaeological evidence tells us our earliest ancestors hopped from platform to platform, following the migrations of the influencer herds, moving on when the soil was too depleted to grow new discourse

Take it as a lesson from Wikipedia and other community-based projects: effort you put into making the fediverse better goes towards a community that will carry it forward for years to come.

Effort to "create a presence" on the latest Twitter alternative boosted by venture capital (or by competitors smelling blood in the water) is free labor for rich people.

Also big thanks to @kainoa for all the behind-the-scenes work in keeping this instance up and running.

I confess I got a bit grumpy at the outages, but I'm definitely interested in the post-mortem writeup.

Curious if the misunderstanding the point of will ever end? We’re 8-9 months since the beginning of the bigger migration waves and I’m still constantly seeing “will mastodon ever succeed? Why is mastodon failing?”

We’re watching the media, in real time, have zero idea how to evaluate something unrelated to capitalism. Have we lost all ability to measure something without a quarterly report?

I want to start to organize these and make an effort to refute. Using something like is way too long and sounds like trying to make fetch happen but I like it.

I didn’t realize that the Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization until AFTER I donated for the first time to support this awesome resource. I have used it so many times - as recently as today. Plus the WABAC machine is named after Sherman & Peabody on Bullwinkle, so you gotta love that.

I looked at my phone's screen time history for the last month. Most days have at least 20 minutes of screen-on-time for Baconreader, my client of choice. Many days have 40 minutes; a few have an hour.

That's a minimum of 20 minutes less time that I'll be using reddit daily starting tomorrow. I'd estimate the average to be around 30 minutes.

That's much less time spent consuming and producing and moderating.

In aggregate, how many people are like me, w/ a shuttered client?

    colindean,
    @colindean@mastodon.social avatar

@Jdreben The innovation is heartening. I think there's a lot of opportunity in the space.

Moderation remains a challenging problem for distributed social networks. I look forward to seeing how these new platforms address it.
