@MikeH Cool. I don't have a preference personally, its a beautiful bird in any aspect. Its just to give an idea that even at the closest I get to birds I am not if fact that close at all.

@adrianfry 400mm with a 1,4x teleconverter (560mm). I shoot full frame so no crop sensor. My lens is pricey by very light for the range (Nikor z 400 f4. 5)

@MikeH of course Mike. Never disturb them. (if they approach you, we'll that's different. (as Swan's and geese often do).

@adrianfry depends on your budget. 2nd hand market or new, but Contemporary' or 'Sport' 150-600 are popular among amateur photographer currently. I must say I haven't used the lens, but have seen many photographs from people who use this lens. Also, I'm not a Canon user, but I do know the best glass costs a fortune. I started with a 70-300 kit lens....I soon found out it wasn't up for the task.

@adrianfry I love my prime, but a few months after I brought it, Nikon brought out a 180 - 600mm. I may have brought that instead. Sometimes, zoom can be handy when panning and for surprise birds that appear to close for my prime.

@adrianfry but the more you try the better you become at anticipating. (I've been photographing birds for just over 2 years and gone from poor to not to bad in that time and have enjoyed the journey).

Some of my sharpest shots are of birds that just appear on fences or branches as I go round a corner. Or a rabbit that is eating on the grass etc... It pays to anticipate.

@adrianfry thanks. I'm not a person who chases the rare and obscure (I do take the odd trip to parts of the country that has birds we don't have) I love the familiar and common. I love going to the the same location over and over and witnessing the changes over the seasons whilst learning when is best for Migratory birds and learning about bird behaviour. It all helps getting closer and better photos.

The unwanted guest.

The Black-headed gulls are non to happy when an Avocet lands on there nesting island. One soon shoes it off to jeers from the braying crowd.

JOIN IN friends of the birds:

THREAD: A to Z of birds.

The idea is to create a thread of birds starting with A and ending with Z (if we get that far).

Rules:

  1. Common names not Latin names
  2. Flexibility with common names (i.e.. American Robin (A) or (R)
  3. IMPORTANT: You can post the same letter bird or the next letter forward but not backward.

Don’t know if this will work. Will pin and boost photos. (Only photographs please of any quality)

@jago @Dolphinchaz 'during the mating season the cocks are right bastards'

@dasparky :) yeah, a pretty little bird. Nice song too.

@ahimsa_pdx it matters not. (The letters thing is just a mechanic to get the thread moving forward) . Nice photo of a great bird.

And yes, threads are hard to manage and navigate, sorry about that.

@MartinTaudio now that's a bird I want to encounter. I've seen a few photos of them, but we don't have them where I am. Thanks for sharing.
