"A fifth (21 GW) of the EU’s coal fleet will close in 2024 and 2025." - Ember

Pretty good. Things are moving.

Not going well at GOP28 today

Some oil and gas countries can't see any scientific evidence that the world need to phase-out fossil fuels. :blobcatfacepalm:

It's going well on COP28 🙂
"More than 100 countries have now signaled support for a fossil fuel phase-out."

They track methane emissions by satellite and tell the oil companies where it leaks.

USA want to cut methane emissions with 80 %. Nothing can stop that, except the election next year.

SSAB plan to reduce CO2 emissions with ~90 % around 2030. That's more than 8 million tonnes. Sweden's total emissions can reduce by around 10 % and Finland's by around 7 %.

They're doing this 15 years earlier than originally planned.

Just saw that some trucks in Australia drive two 800 km round trips per day with a total weight of 175 ton in one of the directions.

I believe a regular 40 ton truck can be modified with 1-2 extra fuel cells and five more H2 storage bottles and that will cover it.

Am I right?

This is a H2 fuel cell. They put two of these hydrogen fuel cells inside a regular Volvo truck.

1000 km range, up to 65 ton vehicle, fill the tank with green H2 in 15 minutes.

There are lots of hydrogen fuel stations in western Europe.

These are the nine TEN-T corridors. I believe they cover about 30 000 km.

The EU requires a heavy duty H2 filling station every 200 km along the core routes along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) by 2030. 👀 ! 😮

They replaced most of the coal with gas during the last fifty years.

Germany is installing Europe's largest battery. :flan_cheer:

500 MWh, to be ramped up to 3 GWh. Iron flow. Pumping electrolytes between two tanks.

Sounds good - Turn off a coal power plant. Install a giant liquid battery. Connect it to solar panels.

@JohanEmpa@mastodon.green avatar

Nuclear lost against coal in the EU, and now it's losing against renewables.

JohanEmpa, to nuclear
@JohanEmpa@mastodon.green avatar

Nuclear energy is dying in the EU.

No new plants, only decommissions, and that in times of quickly growing electricity demand.

Meanwhile solar energy grows fast. It more than covers for the decommissioned nuclear and coal energy.

JohanEmpa, to random
@JohanEmpa@mastodon.green avatar

@TomSwirly
When you say "Unbounded exponential growth is impossible on a finite planet, I believe you do three flawed assumptions

First that the growth isn't naturally bounded by the limits of a finite planet, secondly that the growth is exponential and third that the planet is finite and not part of a larger world

No one wants exponential growth, and luckily we don't have it

In any case, growth or de-growth, the world needs solar panels and EVs to become net-zero.

JohanEmpa, to solar
@JohanEmpa@mastodon.green avatar

This solar panel is about 200 cm times 40 cm and 2 mm thick. Made by Heliatek. It's pretty neat. With glue on the back it's just a matter of pressing it onto the wall and plug it in.

Probably falls off 😅, unless it's superglue? 🤔
