Just some dude who likes running, programming, boardgames, D&D, snowboarding, kayaking exclusively in that order.
Former video game dev, now your regular platform engineer. I like to build things that build things. I am a father of 3, pain in my wife's ass, runner, programmer, possibly crazy guy living the dream.

Hell's Canyon by the numbers. My goal was to be out for at least 10 hours and be able to maintain energy throughout. This was a huge success and I'm so happy with it.

Hells canyon in the books. I got to run a bit with the group and run the second half and my race. I was able to stay out for almost 10 hours jumping into zone 2 with an aerobic push every now and then.. I needed a little convincing at the end from my new friend but the leg check for the last few km went great. I had power and dexterity in my feet to zoom down and up the rocks and finish strong.
10/10 would recommend.

Selfie of me with my running group. my water spigot appears to be attacking me. in the background you can see the snake river between Idaho and Oregon
view of the snake river from 5m or so high. you can see down the trail and the river disappears behind some rocks.

On our hike this morning, we spotted a red fox. And saw a lot of red squirrels.

Which led me to think it might be one red squirrel, hunting us. 🤣

Which then I thought might make a fun movie.

Then @TAV says “And the sequel can be Red Squirrel Rising”.

…and that’s why we’re married. She gets me.

Made it up to Algonquin Park. It’s a bit chilly, but it will warm up later today.

You don’t need to go south for a winter beach experience. 🤣

Got in a short hike this morning, and my attention has turned to my hot chocolate, and maybe a book. …and yes, pop tarts.🤣

Been sitting here trying to think of who I thought I would be when I was younger and I got nothing.
It dawned on me the other day though that as a father to teenage boys, I became the responsible one which I didn't even know was possible.

It's the stupid time change tonight. I really wish they would get rid of daylight saving time and just stick with standard time all year round. Whatever they do, it better not be sticking with daylight saving time year round because that would suck.

I have a question for the visually impaired.

I was thinking about alt text and how it's used to describe things like pictures. And then I thought about how it's an act of trust. That the visually impaired person has to trust the description.

And then I thought about how it wouldn't matter if the picture actually existed. That even just the description of an image might be enough.

And that lead me to my question. Is this is an art form? Are there people known for their descriptive skills?

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@Mrfunkedude
I put more information in my alt text, sometimes describing something or noting it but it is in my voice as me as the storyteller.

Bit of a slog. Then again, I’ve had one short run since taking time off for my ankle to recover. Upon reflection, maybe it wasn’t so bad.

Well I have been slogging for about a week with no injury. If you feel better afterwards, I would call it a win. When my runs go bad, I always feel better afterwards.

The response from Meta's head of AI isn't being received well by AI tech bros. They're asking what intellectual tasks a toddler can do that GPT-4 can't. 😂 Clearly, they've never interacted with a child. Babies/toddlers can understand their parents' emotions far better than any current LLM. In fact,this emotional understanding is nearly impossible for an LLM, which is simply a large language model. Humans still have many capabilities that LLM lack. Let's remember AI's limitations despite the hype

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft
The magic really disappeared for me when I saw GPT's limitations working with Golang generics. At first I was confused because it had an update way after Go generics were released. I think the reality is the examples of generic implementations are pretty sparse and limited. It doesn't quite feel Go idiomatic to use generics since interfaces are so loosely defined so I'm not surprised there aren't a lot of examples
It doesn't have the knowledge to come up with solutions and you can tell

Does anyone else have trouble doing one thing at a time? Like if I'm doing chores it helps to have a podcast or talk to someone, or watching TV, I need to do something with my hands, like a little handy craft, or a simple game. I love movies, but the movie has to be absolutely fascinating for me to want to go to a theater where I just need to sit there and watch. I have a large amount of tabs open on my phone all the time and I flit back and forth through a bunch of different things. Weed helps calm this down a bit.

JustBrogrammer,
@JustBrogrammer@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr
Usually more than one thing but typically only 1 is actively focused on. The rest is either background noise like an audio book or music while running or music while programming.
I do have little pauses in my normal programming journey to deploy or make coffee but those are really just comfortable context switching moments that help me get a different perspective. If I have those then I typically do not get stumped or blocked.

Thursday: 141 seconds of plank, 7.1 km of (-14°C with a windchill of -24°C, w/h gusts to 38km/hr),picked up groceries, and walked home.

Cut my run short as the 4km loop I was planning on taking largely looked like smooth ice, so I went over the Adawe crossing into Strathcona Park, and did groceries.

Pop tarts were on sale, and we're going up to Algonquin park in less than two weeks… something to look forward to.

The idea of any type of "purity" test is fucking stupid. We all have thoughts and opinions which may stray from conventionality. Even within marginalized groups.

I remember the last personality test I took and it had a question about if you look behind the shower curtain at someone else's house and I was all like hell yeah, I don't need anyone jumping out when I am trying to pee.

What in the world is a Warp Terminal? Well, it is a terminal built using Rust that includes several features, such as AI and cloud connectivity. However, it is worth noticing that it is proprietary and a 100% closed source. Additionally, users are required to have an account to use it. It is also bloated by design. No, thank you. I'll stick with the Gnome Terminal or Terminal macOS app. No matter what they say, you don't need the "Wrap Terminal" with bells and whistles.
