Realised I've never shared Napoleon the feral kitty's story here, so here we go.

This is Napoleon, and this is the story of his nine-month journey from a hungry, desperate feral street cat to snuggly duvet monster. /1 🧵

Another blast from the past.

"Mixin' it up at the Planet"
(as in AcidPlanet)

100% sample based using Sony Studio, trying to making it sound like live and "organic" Jazz/R&B - approx 2008.

I still really like the result - even if - as I recall - it really was thrown together in just a few late night hours. The inspiration came from that nice horn section sample set.

LarsFosdal,
@LarsFosdal@mastodon.social avatar

@m2m
Thank you!

I agree! Sound Forge and Vegas were pretty nice. Good workflow and flexible UI. They still all exist under https://www.magix.com/

When I wanted to pick up music again, I was weighing pros/cons, but decided to try to focus on Logic Pro, rather than going back to AcidPro.

I also considered others like Cubase, FL Studio and Ableton Live, but I am definitively not a live performer.

I also wanted to use a Mac, since I needed one to compile iOS and MacOS software :)

So, I have still not found time to fully embed myself in my Logic Pro studies, but I found some stuff from back when I used samples and my K2500 with Sony Acid Pro Studio, around 2009.

Certain folks are saying that Bluesky’s search capabilities spell potential doom for the Fediverse.

Except Bluesky is only searching on one node. What happens when you add another node? What happens when you add 10,000 nodes for Bluesky to connect with?

Will all nodes that use AT protocol have comparable search?

Will Bluesky’s search even be as good as what’s available on Misskey, Akkoma, Friendica, and some forms of Mastodon?

We don’t know!

LarsFosdal,
@LarsFosdal@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet The current WordPress plugin has a bad flaw. Instead of allowing it to post on my behalf with a Mastodon account of my choice, it exposes my WP login identity. Not good.

Welcome

If you are coming from Twitter, you understandably may feel like it is a lot quieter here. Mastodon is not "dead," but there is no bombarding you with stuff. Here you develop your own user experience by searching out and following people and things that interest you. You can pretty quickly build a much more satisfying experience, but it takes a little effort. Following is a good way to get started. Be patient and join in conversations.

LarsFosdal,
@LarsFosdal@mastodon.social avatar

@mastodonmigration
I can verify that Mastodon is far from quiet even if it initially feels that way. The reason it is quiet, is that there is no algorithm spoon-feeding us with promoted, viral or artificially boosted posts. You pick your own content, and although that takes a little more time, it is so worth it! Search, read, and drink from the fire hose to discover your new people or topics/ to follow.

It's 2023 and still too many food producers and retailers fail to care for the welfare of their customers. This is especially true in the Italian province, where we experienced two episodes of mislabeling and carelessness within a few months.

The first time, a normal cappuccino arrived instead of a soy one. The blame was placed on @m2m not having recognised the taste of milk.

The second, yesterday, an ice cream labeled "no milk" made us both sick. Irresponsible behaviour

LarsFosdal,
@LarsFosdal@mastodon.social avatar

@silviamaggi @m2m Working for a Norwegian dairy company that produces both vegan products and cow and goat milk-based products and derivatives (such as lactose-free products), I can say that the focus on food safety is paramount to us. This will become even more important in the future, to ensure that the ingredients in products are sustainable, healty, original and unmodified - and properly labelled!

So many people come to the Fediverse new and say, “I’m trying to build my network.”

I don’t know about any of that.

You can find friendliness and friends here. You can find generosity and creativity. You can find struggles and victories, small and large. As many emotions as millions of different humans can share.

If you’re thinking about “follows” as a resource to harvest instead of humans just like you, you’ll likely find things awkward.

LarsFosdal,
@LarsFosdal@mastodon.social avatar

@troublewithwords I've been online since the late 1980s. My attitude has changed a lot over the years, from self-promotion to happy-to-share and happy-to-find-you. Finding stuff that interest and entertains me, and sharing comments - hopefully without becoming that reply guy, I spelunk the web, avoiding the darker corners, enjoing the bright sparks that other people can be.

Way back in 2021, I called out as a scam because it was masquerading as a service provider when it fact it was paying certain writers (often secretly) to create content for them. (https://buttondown.email/thehypothesis/archive/heres-why-substacks-scam-worked-so-well/) They had an editorial mission and a paid writing staff, but claimed to be a neutral service provider like Etsy for authors. Here's how that story is going ...
