I'm limiting federation with mastodon.social (again) due to (more) spam coming from that domain.

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@jay will concede I didn't check my timeline first to see if there was an update from social and reacted to multiple reports from my users based on previously slow reaction from social 🤷

Thanks for pointing me to it though :alex_heart_eyes:

@erosdiscordia @drwho pride progress style flag made with colours used to indicate the value of a resistor.
Each colour is used to represent a number and the gold/silver/etc is used to represent a tolerance of how close to the stated value the component will be
(Sorry if you already know about resistors!)

Some people might not be aware, but mastodon.nz is actually running on a couple of laptops we sourced from trademe.

The batteries were poked, so we just run them plugged in. We upgraded storage by adding new external hard drives from Harvey Norman.

To hook into a fast connection, we shoved it all in a rack in a datacentre though; they're sitting on top of someone's server 🤷

Follow me for more infrastructure tips.

(Edit: Okay... although feasible, our actual setup is linked in comments.)

@swansinflight two laptops :alex_thinking: two...

makes mastodon.radio with only one VPS look unreliable

Sigh...

Why do so many YouTubers seem to have a gun fetish?

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@F4JWJ @dynode @bud_t I liked the comparison between preppers and house cats.

Both fiercely independent whilst entirely reliant on a complex system they neither understand or acknowledge

By adding an SSD and maximizing the RAM, along with using a free operating system such as Linux or FreeBSD, your laptop can easily be extended another five years of life.

@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@nixCraft you added alt text! But it's not very good... Please try and describe the image not just copy the text.

PS. Agree this needs a Content Warning.

Hey, my friends, look at that!
I've got one and I hope to be able to try it in field on next week end 😛

100 watts RF for bands from 160m to 6m in less than 2 kg of hardware.

I'm sure it will be my best companion on summits 😊

The screen of the transceiver set on 14.180 MHz USB

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@F1RUM @ZL1LLY I could probably print and post you some if you can't find anyone local

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@mmu_man @F1RUM @F4JWJ for what it's worth I wouldn't print them on the side like shown, but flat on the bed. Should reduce the supports required (speed up printing and less material) and not sacrifice strength (layers would be in a different orientation.

I'd consider using PLA+ for extra strength too.

Some good news today, Dad's lent a hand by trimming the hedge, I've got the PV inverter talking to the WiFi (the ESP32 which is making that happen needs to go into a Wiska box next) ... that means I need to either sand and paint the bay window or terminate the CAT7 cables and get the garage WiFi bridge up and running.

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@philpem I did the hedge at the weekend and only cut the cable once this time! (I'm going to need to replace the cable soon as it's getting slightly too short to be useful)

I have been running for about 2 weeks now, and I am finally at the point that I am starting to implement features that I got with plugins.

One such feature is the timelapse functionality that gives you. It was quite simple, well sort of, but it could also be overwhelming. It had this sweet spot between functionality and complexity. But then again, that's the philosophy of . Go overkill with plugins or KISS.

But I digress.

I want to implement timelapses using Mainsail and its timelapse feature. Does anyone have a few good tips or stuff that I need to do, or maybe a write-up on it? The docs are quite good, I already read them, but I am just wondering.

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@Stark9837 @3dprinting I have it working. Found lots of guides were out of date and confusing. Let me see if I can summarise the currently required settings for mainsail

One thing I miss is the lack of stabilisation

Timelapse of a planter printing, the object jumps around every so often. Sometimes it stays in roughly the same place for a while, sometimes it rapidly changes This is due to the photos being taken at layer change which doesn't happen at a consistent x y location

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@Stark9837 @3dprinting I'm using layer change macro inserted by cura.
With octolapse I was using the "smart snap to print" to minimise the extra time and mess added to a print, plus seeing the head is kinda cool.

I think the correct way to set up timelapse for klipper and mainsail now is
https://github.com/mainsail-crew/moonraker-timelapse/blob/main/docs/installation.md

You can do all the config in the UI
It does support parking the head, but not the more advanced triggers like octolapse

Interesting!
Printed this bird using GEEETECH Matte black PLA using variable layer height.

The matte-ness changes depending on layer height, being more matte with smaller layer height. It's not speed related as the outer perimeter speed doesn't change.

Is this a known thing with matte filaments?

@3dprinting

Short timelapse video of a bird being printed. Starts slightly shiny with simple thicker layera and becomes more matte as it prints smaller layers with more detail.

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@stooovie @3dprinting that makes sense... Thin layers are probably taking slightly longer (more details and corners) and will cool faster due to less material so will have cooled more thoroughly before the next bit of hot plastic hits.

All layers had the parts fan at 100% so maybe cooling is something to investigate improving.

Trying out because everyone on @3dprinting said I should.

Raspberry pi camera worked fine!

Then I thought to try klipper screen with an "MHS 3.5inch display" using the "LCD-show" github code.
Which works!

But now the camera doesn't.

What stupid thing do I need to change for both to work?

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@Stark9837 @3dprinting thanks for sharing. That guide is out of date now as crowsnest is installed and working pretty much out of the box.

I have a working webcam.

I can also have a working screen.

But not at the same time.

Has someone asked you to "caption your image" or "add a text description" or "use alt text" and you're not sure what that is, or how?

This page is here to help!

https://m0yng.uk/Image-descriptions-on-the-Fediverse/

Covers most (all?) Android apps, web interfaces, and TUI/CLIs that I know about.

(I know that not everyone can describe things, and that's ok! This page is here to help people who want to but don't know how, or want some tips.)

Deep links should work, e.g. for @Tusky
