Could any of you fine folk recommend a meter I could plug into a UK mains socket that would give a reasonably accurate voltage reading? Possibly also to accept a device and measure its power usage? Want to see how under/over voltage my supply is as my EV matt:e is tripping out. Thanks!

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@g7vkq @M0CUV interesting... We're getting a heat pump in late Feb so I'm going to care even more about this soon.

Currently on "intelligent octopus flux" which is 24p mostly but 32p at peak times
This is offset by the export price being 25p and 34p at peak times.
They then manage our solar battery to charge up off peak and discharge at peak times.

Yesterday we exported 4.4kWh and made a 44p "profit" just by that import/export time shift.

Still not sure if it makes financial sense...

@erosdiscordia starts chanting swords for queers! Swords for queers!

Seriously though it's always felt like general roles and expressions in hyrule are different to the prevailing culture here so it would fit better to have an enby link.

Might also avoid the need to force a love interest in there, although I'm up for enby link and princess Mipha

    Finally switched to a smart energy tariff - Octopus Agile.

    I'm hoping that our panels and battery (@solar) will be able to offset any big spikes in price.

    Either by storing more electricity when it is cheap, or discharging when it is expensive.

    Grrrr. My #HomeAssistant is taking over 30 minutes to upgrade from 2023.10.3 to 2023.10.5.

    Is that normal?

    Admittedly, it's running on an ancient Raspberry Pi 2. Should I be upgrading to something better - or is the process always this slow?

    If you have personal experience with modern Home Assistant devices, feel free to recommend one to me.

    Edent, to random
    @Edent@mastodon.social avatar

    Anyone who says they get more traffic to their site from Mastodon than Twitter is... misguided at best.

    Mastodon appends "noreferrer" to every external link. Your browser literally doesn't tell the server where it clicked from.

    Now, some writers might be putting different tracking on their Twitter and Mastdon links.

    But, by design, Mastodon doesn't show up in servers referral logs.
    Whether that's a good thing or not is left as an exercise for the reader.

    M0YNG,
    @M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

    @Edent I specifically mention finding people on mastodon when I order their stuff which I doubt many do, so it's possible they are under counting traffic if anything

    It could also be a simple comparison to how much traffic they got when only sharing on twitter compare with how much they do only sharing on mastodon.

    M0YNG,
    @M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

    @Edent it's a mess, many things go to family @ legacy domain, I've got a new better domain but partner hasn't set up their account yet (going on a year?)

    Others go individually, and in some cases we share a log in but the account email is individual which makes password resets an issue!

    Plus we can't send from the family account so quite a few times we've had arguments with customer support because "we can only deal with emails sent from the email address registered with us"

    The mainstream "tech" YouTubers and their consequences have been a disaster for my comment section.

    Thanks to LTT and co. indiscriminately telling their viewers about how hard drives are "dead" and doing sponsored server builds with 16TB SSD arrays, I now have to endure at least one teenager with a Roblox pfp per week commenting "HDDs are dead lol, nobody should be using spinning rust! downvoted and unsubscribed" under my video.

    M0YNG,
    @M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

    @notthebee I've been genuinely considering building a NAS with SSD rather than HDD, my thinking being I can make it smaller and lower power - as I assume solid state storage uses less power when operating than spinning metal (and my nas is operating a lot of the time)

    Is this valid do you think?
    Or would HDD for bulk storage that spins down and a cache ssd balance power and cost better?

    I've made a very rough map of every street in Amsterdam that will be changing to 30km/h on December 8th.

    The lines in green are changing from 50km/h to 30km/h.

    Are there any surprises here for you?

    I was surprised by Rooseveltlaan, for example. It's quite wide today!

    I'm going to get out to film the "before" case this week (and hopefully livestream the ride, too!)

    M0YNG,
    @M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

    @notjustbikes pro accessibility tip, don't use green and red like this. Plenty of people can't tell the difference between red and green, so everything will just look orange.

    In this case it's probably easiest to just put the roads that are reducing in green

    This little miniITX motherboard with 6 (!) M.2 slots has been making the rounds lately:
    https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-ad650i

    Before anyone asks if it's the next ultra low-power NAS king – probably not. The stock MXM board features an ASMedia PCIe switch, which is usually a bad sign.

    @Edent yet another reminder why open source communities can be toxic

    "Hi! It appears you didn't read or follow the provided issue template. Your issue has been marked as invalid."
    Says a bot.

    M0YNG,

    @Edent I feel like you've put the effort in to make a report, and a bot automatically marked it as "invalid" is at least disrespectful.

    If it marked it as "requires clarification" or similar and pointed you to the guides (rather than "you did it wrong") I think that would be more welcoming.

    Sure, mark it as invalid after you don't change anything 7 days later, but not immediately.

    Ham speak

    Ham radio users have developed their own lingo over the decades.

    Rubber duck: a short, inefficient antenna

    Boat anchor: old radio

    Bacon frying: background hissing in communications

    Reading the mail: lurking and not transmitting

    Pound brass: to operate using Morse code

    XYL: wife (ex-young-lady)

    OM: old man (funnily enough, this refers to any male ham, regardless of age)

    Lid: an inept operator with bad habits

    M0YNG,
    @M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

    @HopelessDemigod and due to the fact that many of us are not sexist and want women, young people, non-binary people, etc. To enjoy the hobby we're trying to shift to:

    OP: operator. Anyone who operates the radio.

    SO: significant other. Anyone who is in a relationship with the OP

    E.g.
    "Thanks for coming back to my call OP"
    "Your SO is welcome at the BBQ"

    Got my seasonal flu vaccine yesterday.

    A very slick operation at the GP where hundreds of people classified as vulnerable to an airborne respiratory disease (for various reasons) are swiftly pointed to one of many rooms where someone checks you're the right person, stabs you, and out the other door you go.

    An airborne respiratory disease dangerous enough to this group of people they need an annual vaccine against it.

    I was the only person there wearing a mask.
    Not even the staff.

    M0YNG,
    @M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

    @IU1KGS I understand that wearing a mask all day every day isn't ideal and there are some people who would benefit from reading lips etc.

    But I don't think it's unreasonable to expect professionals dealing with vaccines for vulnerable people against an airborne respiratory virus to wear a mask.

    In the same way we expect a dentist to wash their hands after going to the toilet before checking my teeth.

    But maybe, just maybe, I'm being unreasonable.

    No, you can't save £30 per year by switching off your "standby" devices

    Every few years, a dodgy stat does the rounds claiming you can save £££ if you switch off all your gadgets at the wall. The standby mode of your TV is bleeding you dry!!!

    M0YNG,
    @M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

    @Edent I was interested in this and I have the equipment to get some data about my home so, here is some data about my washing machine.
    It is about 10 years old.
    It is connected to power via a socket that measures power and can turn the power on and off.

    In this you can see the machine draw 0.005kWh over 15 hours.
    You can so see how it draws absolutely 0 when turned off at the socket.
    That's a total of 0.008kWh per day or 2.92kWh per year.
    At current 27p/kWh cap that's 79p a year.

    M0YNG,
    @M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

    @Edent it would take nearly 16 years to brake even on the cost of the connected socket!
