We just released important security patches for versions 4.1, 4.2, nightly, and the already discontinued 3.5 and 4.0.

If you are using nightly, you can upgrade to the 4.3.0-nightly.2024-02-15-security tag to get the patches.

Please upgrade as soon as possible!

@MastodonEngineering done, but would have appreciated some warning like previous releases.

Any tips on a cheap low current power supply for running aprs base station?

Edent, to homeassistant

Has anyone here used a #Matter smart plug to detect when an electrical appliance has finished doing something?

For example, I want to plug in my rice cooker and get an alert on my phone when its electrical use drops to zero.

Ideally using something like #HomeAssistant - but I'm not fussed.

(Looking for people with direct & personal experience; I know how to use Google. Also, not looking for your criticisms of #IoT.)

Considering the harm that so-called "ai" can/does cause, the environmental impact, exploitation of artists and their work, blatant disregard of copyright, degradation of the quality and value of real art and writing, etc. I'm considering adding a restriction to it's use on .radio.

What do you think about a rule saying:

The use of "ai"/LLM generated images, text, code, etc. is strongly discouraged. It must not be used in a way that pretends to be the work of a real human.

@douglasvb @ai6yr refurbished office thin client.

Unless you're doing something specifically pi based (even then USB gpio exist) they win on price especially as they come with PSU, storage, more ram, better cpu, case, power button, proper display ports, etc.

My solar system has been fully commissioned, and generated 6kWh on its first full day.

The array has shading in the winter, so the 3kW of solar won't really reach its full potential until spring. Until then, I do at least have full battery backup for all the power outages we have out here.

image/png

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@kwf welcome to the rabbit hole of obsession!
Are there FOUR batteries there?

We got 6.9kWh today, and even on an overcast winter days there are long periods where the solar is generating as much, or more than, the house is using!

If you haven't already, check if you can get a variable import tariff, then look at charging the battery from the grid when it's cheap and running from that during more expensive periods. We're saving about 40% just from that.

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@kwf that's a different balance to mine. We have 4.4kW peak solar, 9.6kWh storage in a single battery, and a 3.6kW inverter.
Theory is that although we will occasionally generate more than we can invert it won't happen often or for long, and is more efficient more of the time.

Charging from the grid is allowed, even encouraged here.
Our supplier even have tariffs that actively charge from and discharge to the grid depending on demand etc.
https://octopus.energy/smart/intelligent-octopus-flux/

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@kwf that's a good reason.
Ours isn't set up for off-grid running. Wasn't something offered by the installer, and a different one could only set up one circuit to run from the inverter and not fail over the entire house.
But it doesn't happen often so ๐Ÿคท

Any tips on connecting something like this to a UK electric cupboard or consumer unit?

Obviously I have mains power in there but it's not easily available...

M0YNG,

@philpem I suspected terrorists t wasn't a simple job. Got a heat pump that has it's own mini consumer unit and want to monitor the power it uses.
In theory this would be easier?

If a was more, not less energy efficient than the incumbents, faster and able to handle transactions at scale with less cost, would that make it desirable?

Another way of asking this is whether you see any other significant problems, with the principle rather than the implementation?

I have long criticised Blockchain but am not opposed to decentralised electronic cash, and interested to learn if those critical of are fundamentally opposed.

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@markhughes given those changes then yeah, I'd be much happier with electronic cash.

I'd be most happy if the pyramid scheme aspect were also removed.

It's 1ยฐc and I'm cycling.
"You must be freezing on that!" someone comments.

Not really, I've got a hoodie, and a snood covering my face, and a coat, and gloves, and a helmet with ear flaps.

In a car I'd have to stand outside scraping ice off it, waiting for the fan to clear the inside, then sit still in the cold metal box with my breath fogging on the screen again, and panicking when I accidentally use screen wash that freezes on contact, and the heater never gets warm anyway :alex_crazy:

It's not much but consider:

  • it's December, in the UK
  • Christmas week means more cooking and lights
  • only west facing
  • it's December so the tumble dryer gets a lot of use!

I started mastodon.radio in 2018 for a reason and I still run mastodon.radio for the same reason.

There is zero chance I'll let any of them in when they turn up uninvited ready to scoop up our community.

@M0YNG random question which might already be a FAQ (which I looked for, but didn't discover):

After tapping the Mastodon search button (๐Ÿ”), one of the tabs is called "Local" which is what I use to discover new and interesting content here.

I updated the official Mastodon app yesterday and now it's gone.

Did I do something wrong, did you remove it, did the app?

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@vk6flab probably the app. I don't use the "official" one as it is very opinionated towards large general instances, which we aren't. There are many better alternatives IMO!

As for news, I think that's one of the things that requires a moderator to constantly approve trending topics and stuff, and I don't have time for that.

Could any of you fine folk recommend a meter I could plug into a UK mains socket that would give a reasonably accurate voltage reading? Possibly also to accept a device and measure its power usage? Want to see how under/over voltage my supply is as my EV matt:e is tripping out. Thanks!

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@g7vkq @M0CUV very interesting. I already have an automation that monitors local grid carbon intensity and turns the "high draw" stuff on/off based on this ( https://m0yng.uk/2023/08/High-draw-low-carbon-automation-with-Home-Assistant/ ) so I don't think it would be a massive shift to go fully agile...

Sorry, this is a long way from the original toot!

@g7vkq @M0CUV yup. This is the dishwasher. Although it appears to only give data if the relay is "on"

Can anyone recommend a key manager for ?

I was using OpenKeyChain - but is has been abandoned https://github.com/open-keychain/open-keychain

(Looking for personal recommendations - not search results. Thanks.)

M0YNG,

@Edent I'm using OpenKeyChain, does it need to be actively developed? If it works it works, right?
However I can see the desire to move before it beaks or there is a security issue that doesn't get fixed...
