Got my seasonal flu vaccine yesterday.

A very slick operation at the GP where hundreds of people classified as vulnerable to an airborne respiratory disease (for various reasons) are swiftly pointed to one of many rooms where someone checks you're the right person, stabs you, and out the other door you go.

An airborne respiratory disease dangerous enough to this group of people they need an annual vaccine against it.

I was the only person there wearing a mask.
Not even the staff.

Mastodon allows you to verify yourself as the owner of your website. If your website is well-known, then this will in effect verify your identity as well.

Here's how to verify you are the owner of a website:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/

If the green verified link method doesn't work for you, here are a number of methods for fixing it:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/#MyWebsiteVerificationDoesntWork

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@feditips @K3can another thing for hams to be aware of is that qrz.com will never verify because they use JavaScript to render all the details and the mastodon verification doesn't handle that (will apply to any site that doesn't have the link in the raw HTML returned by the server as far as I know)

Urgent, boosts appreciated: My web host, Heart Internet, is imploding (I found this out AFTER I'd paid them for a year's worth of dedicated server up front) and I need recommendations for a company doing dedicated servers. Please, PLEASE only tell me about companies that you personally have used and have positive firsthand experience with, please don't just google this for me.

EDIT: I'm going with Hetzner, thanks to your recommendations and the recommendations of folk I know IRL and was able to chat with face-to-face, thanks everyone for boosting this so widely and giving me so many excellent recs, there's no need to boost this post any more, you are all wonderful

EDIT 2: folk asking how I know Heart's winding up, check out the TrustPilot reviews from mid-August on, you gotta read between the lines a bit but the takeaway is a) they're doing the "whoops we're experiencing unusually high volume of support requests" thing, b) at least one support team member is going "Screw it, here's how to transfer your domains to someone else." I assume that's why y'all are still boosting this lol

EDIT 3: maybe y'all are still boosting this because the "I'm asking for firsthand experience pls don't just google it for me" bit is Resonating with you, I want to let you know that it annoys me as much as it annoys you. A fun game to play when someone does that is to ask them how they know, and when they say google, pretend not to know what that is and ask them to explain it

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@penguin42 @ifixcoinops same, mastodon.radio is hosted with @beasts and they are excellent. I suspect they'll help you out of sticky situations like this too.

Edent, to random
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

Other than looking at server logs, is there any way to tell how many people subscribe to an feed?
Are there any big aggregators which give out that information?

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@Edent tracking pixels and other analytics embedded in the feed that call back to your server. Oh wait, avoiding all of that nonsense is exactly why people use RSS.

Just looked into #APRS for the first time via @ai6yr, pretty nifty. Seems like it would be super cool and worthwhile to put up a #Gemini-to-APRS gateway. 🤔

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr @dragfyre it's not my protocol, but my website is available over it

You can do all sorts over ax25 however you can't encrypt, and gemini required encryption so you'd have to mod the server and client to not do that bit.

#Beepy folks, have you tried updating your keyboard firmware? It is not a new release but the firmware binary says it was updated yesterday. I'm wondering if it fixes some of the issues people were having with the previous update? I'm scared to try it though because mine is working fine LOL.

M0YNG, to Matrix
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

I keep returning to the idea of running a #matrix server attached to mastodon.radio

We have an #xmpp server already, but I don't think it gets much use and not many projects host discussions on xmpp these days, and many use matrix so it feels like matrix would be more useful.

However, it is more resource intensive, I'd probably need to spin up a new vps dedicated to running the #synapse matrix server, and I don't want to use donations wastefully. Plus more admin overhead.

So, do you want it?

feditips, (edited ) to mastodon
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

Server admins!

If you're creating custom emoji, remember to fill in the section marked "Shortcode" with a short text description of the emoji. Blind people's screen reader software will be able to read the shortcode aloud so that they can hear what the emoji is.

If the emoji's shortcode includes multiple words, split them up with underscores like_this or CamelCase, so that screen readers will be able to read each word correctly.

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@feditips @USelaine but this is another good reason to do shortcodes well, not everyone can see the custom emoji, sometimes it's because they're blind, sometimes the file doesn't load, sometimes the app doesn't support it, sometimes their display can't do it (e.g. using toot)

I’ve never worked a job where I have to wake up at a specific time and I’ve always wondered if it’s professionally acceptable to just be honest and tell someone their 9am meeting suggestion is too early. Currently I just tell everyone my schedule is book every day until 10 am (which is technically true because I have 2am - 9am scheduled for sleeping and 9am - 10am scheduled for drinking coffee and processing being alive).

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@malwaretech I will tollerate the occasional 0930 meeting if thats the only time everyone is available, but I have declined meeting invites for 0900

Full text search has been merged in main branch, and will be in the next (and final?) 4.2.0 beta 🎉

It is opt-in, so it will take some time to be filled with people content as they enable their profile to be indexed, but this was one of the most wanted Mastodon features for some time.

We plan to deploy it to mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the coming days to have a bit more feedback on it and see how it behaves in the wild.

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@renchap as an instance admin I really need to know how much resource this new feature will take on my server. I've not seen this info anywhere and as an admin it seems I can't opt out of deploying it like I have for the elastic search version.
If I need more ram or cpu this is going to cost us real money to upgrade the vps.

Fellow folks: I have a young (6 month old or so) niece, and I wanted to print her something squishy to hold and play with out of TPU. It's also an opportunity for me to learn to work with that material. Does anyone have any suggestions of models for this? My searches are coming up a bit empty.

@3dprinting

M0YNG,

@Stark9837 @koz @3dprinting agree, animals work well. For extra squish I'd go for minimal infill and 2 or 3 walls

Something that I can't get out of my head recently is:

The and .

  • There are billions of people
  • With high probability some of them are interested in radio
  • Many are older than me so could have been doing radio for years
  • Some of them must have a radio license
  • 2m and 70cm repeaters are all over, and cover most of the country so there should always be someone TX or RX
  • Why are the repeaters silent and why does no one ever answer my calls?

What is it about technology companies looking at every dystopian thing and saying "oh we should do that!"

M0YNG,

@philpem @tryst sure we could solve the problem of people needing to steal food to eat by providing universal basic income, a benefits system that supports people, and focusing on economics that insure people are fairly compensated for their work whilst taking advantage of automation and technical advances to reduce the burden on human beings OR we could hit people with sticks for being hungry enough to risk stealing food.

If so it shouts data over 433MHz and you can decode with with rtlsdr

I ingest directly into home assistant (which has the RTL plugged into it) and there is an api so could be simple to get the data for aprs.

looks like there's a bunch of people right now, who've been paid to go up onto the hill that overlooks "The Web As An Open Platform", and they're about to begin heaving into motion the juggernaut that will, in five years or ten, utterly destroy it. but what's wildest to me is that before they went up there they wrote a little 'here's how the village ends' pamphlet and pinned it to the noticeboard by the town hall for everybody to see? and signed their actual names to it?? https://github.com/RupertBenWiser/Web-Environment-Integrity

M0YNG,
@M0YNG@mastodon.radio avatar

@mastodonmigration @jk I feel like this will end up like some USA sites that just go "oh, nope, gdpr, can't serve you our website. Please go away." And I think, "OK" and I go away. And I feel like it's them missing out here, not me.

So if I don't run this and they can't serve me adverts so they won't let me visit and I think "OK" and go back to my web ring and the fediverse?
