Democracy requires a well-informed electorate. Media shapes democracy. Corporate media alone cannot well serve this role.

We are a non-partisan, all-volunteer, grassroots civic membership organization fighting for a more informative and pro-democracy media operating in the public interest.

Introducing our weekly review of 2024 election coverage, 'Good News, Bad News.'

With only 200 days left until Election Day we all need to start asking for coverage that uplifts and defends democracy.

Here's how it works

Each week, we’ll compare our pro-democracy election coverage guidelines to recent election coverage to highlight which newsrooms are standing up for democracy and which aren't.

Too many journalists normalize Trump’s extremism, treat electoral politics (and the massive impact it has on our lives) as a drama-filled sport, and make false equivalencies between candidates campaigning to uphold democratic institutions and those at war with democracy.

What do our Pro-Democracy Election Coverage Guidelines ask of newsrooms?

  1. Cover elections like they matter more than sports scores.

  2. Make threats to democracy clear.

  3. Protect Americans from disinformation.

American media must advocate for democracy. We created guidelines for election coverage so that you can hold newsrooms accountable.

@MAD_democracy Marty hadn’t always practiced what he preached, but why I mostly dislike articles like this is that they ignore the role the public plays in journalist’s and publisher’s choices. We support a lot of crap with our choices. And that should be a big part of the conversation too.

MAD_democracy,
@MAD_democracy@journa.host avatar

@shoq

We agree with you on both points but hope for education and learning.

While it is true that the press can (and does) legitimately point to public demand for stuff like horse race coverage, we can still call for higher standards and work to educate the public, as well.

And we hope Baron is learning and will advocate for better practices.

The editor of Cleveland.Com tells his readers:

"Trust your eyes. Trump on Jan. 6 launched the most serious threat to our system of government since the Civil War. You know that. You saw it.

The facts involving Trump are crystal clear, and as news people, we cannot pretend otherwise, as unpopular as that might be with a segment of our readers. There aren’t two sides to facts. People who say the earth is flat don’t get space on our platforms."

As Marty Baron, former EIC of Washington Post and Boston Globe recently noted:
"Journalists must oppose violence and abuses of power and should advocate for democracy, norms of civic discourse, tolerance, and equal opportunity for all,"

β€œWe have to stand for democracy, and we have to be opposed to people who are undermining democracy."

We've written guidelines for news reporting that supports democracy. This column from Cleveland.com is a great example of what we think we need.

Our Trump reporting upsets some readers, but there aren’t two sides to facts: Letter from the Editor https://www.cleveland.com/news/2024/03/our-trump-reporting-upsets-some-readers-but-there-arent-two-sides-to-facts-letter-from-the-editor.html
