I'm surprised at how modern this 70s band sounds. Wouldn't take much to make it fit any current prog metal album today. Also their logo is an .

We all know how good Linux is. But, let's discuss some of its weak points. 🐧

ksaj,

@itsfoss I dislike sudden major changes that make you re-install everything from scratch. This just happened with Raspberry Pi OS (debian) because of the switch to Wayland, and I assume others had this same issue as well.

I also think the OS should be saving a list of everything you have installed, and at which version, so that when you do rebuild from scratch, or build a new system in general, you can just run that as a script to get it reasonably similar to where you left off.

Ohio is apparently testing their tornado sirens, and that is why the fediverse is wooing. I had no idea Ohio was the center of the fedi

ksaj,

@jerry Ohhh, I remember when they did that in Toronto once. It was rainy and I lived on Lakeshore near the CN Tower at the time. My window was open, and I woke up to "air raid" sirens and being rained on.

I thought it was the end of the world, and had to turn on the TV news to make sure it wasn't Armageddon. :ablobspin:

There is a noticeable decline in the number of active users on Infosec.exchange lately. Where are the cool kids hanging out these days?

Had to get a loaner vehicle from a local dealership because a 10 y/o car that I love needed a lot of work. So they gave me the latest model of the same car -- brand new -- which was vastly less powerful than ours, and kept trying to steer me between the lines and cause the steering wheel to rumble when I hit a line and all kinds of crap that just annoyed me.

The dealership probably thought they would entice me to buy the newer model, but driving it just made me more convinced I made the right decision to put the money into the old car.

Today's story is a wild ride. I hope you all get a chance to read it, because it's frankly just crazy. And a little long. But worth it, I promise.

On Jan. 9, 2024, U.S. authorities arrested a 19-year-old Florida man charged with wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiring with others to use SIM-swapping to steal cryptocurrency. Sources close to the investigation tell KrebsOnSecurity the accused was a key member of a criminal hacking group blamed for a string of cyber intrusions at major U.S. technology companies during the summer of 2022.

Apropos of nothing, I just realized that the last time I didn’t have a job was 1989. The Soviet Union was still firmly a thing.

@pauliehedron @jerry

I have mentioned this U cut to people, and they think I'm nuts. But all Subways used to do it! And that cut was superior because it was so much less messy, yet you still got all the same amount of stuff inside.

Please tell this story to everyone I know.

Programming today seems more about reinventing the dead, than actually doing shit ...

ksaj,

@amszmidt It is. I feel this way every time I see something "written in Rust" or whatever the flavour of the day is. My interpretation is: Nice. You've duplicated things. Again.

ksaj,

@loke @amszmidt People that insist on having "written in whateverlang" are just learning the language, and foisting their unmastered code on the masses. What other reason could their be?

ksaj,

@loke @amszmidt There are demonstrative reasons to do things. It was new, and they wanted to demonstrate that Java could do something useful. Failing at that isn't such a bad thing, because then there is a milestone to reach to demonstrate when the language is ready.

On the same topic is the 30 or so unfinished Lisp tutorials out there. Just because they're learning Lisp doesn't mean they have to foist their repeated lessons for everyone else (esp when they leave in their mistakes!). It is probably helpful to the learner, but it's a disaster for everyone who doesn't realize it was entirely written by a beginner who didn't necessarily make very good choices along the way.

Sometimes you think it's a good course - things covered in depth, etc. But as each subject goes by, they get shorter and shorter, and then suddenly drop off in the middle of something. And it's not even half-way through the purported subject yet!

ksaj,

@loke @amszmidt Yea, the timing suggests it was during the Object Oriented for Everything days. People were genuinely convinced that OO would be safer, easier, somehow faster, etc. The "rapid prototyping" concept had already died down, and presumably this would replace it. Everywhere.

I had a friend who kept on going on about all the "new" things Java could do that C didn't really do. I just kept saying "Oh, like Lisp. But slower and way more LoC!" to get him riled up. 😈

Have you ever had levels of anxiety that basically prevent you from doing anything productive?

ksaj,

@jerry That's the ADHD way of life.

Give someone with ADHD one thing to do, and you will likely be okay. Give them a list of things to do by the end of the day, and the anxiety will ensure not one of them gets done.

I feel like there have been more IT workers laid off in the past year than there were IT workers 10 years ago. Totally unscientific observation

ksaj,

@jerry I was thinking something like that the other day. I keep reading about infosec folks suffering from Impostor Syndrome, when "back in my day" there weren't enough of us working as professionals to feel that way.

But now what I see are actual impostors getting the work, while the Real McCoy's are getting called "over qualified" and stuck trying to be heard over the noise.

I realized that many of the people suffering Impostor Syndrome are only suffering because they're being treated like Impostors while the guy (ok, nearly always a guy) who aced an online multiple choice questionnaire suddenly adds the word "senior" to their titlez, goes on a media blitzer, and is now the new flavour of the industry. It's almost literally the reverse of the Boomer problem.

During the 90's, everyone was worried about the Internet becoming commercialized. It never dawned on me then how commercialized (in the bubblegum sense) infosec would become.

Throw a bunch of random letters after your name, and be a god. Or do the work and be overqualified. Your choice! /soapbox

I just got the most dystopian YouTube ad. It's made using an AI to sound like Donald Trump warning everyone that America is about to be attacked and the food supply will be destroyed. The link just goes to some weird website selling meal rations 🥴

ksaj,

@malwaretech I hope you reported it. They do have a policy against using fake politician's voices.

Anyway, this kind of bullshit is why I ad block and put up with their slower streaming rates. What they want for people is very unhealthy.
