Every business-savvy executive knows that the best time to ask shareholders for an astronomical payday is when you’ve flushed 40% of the company’s stock value down the toilet in the preceding months. Shareholders love that.

Israel is a first-world country that enjoys a GDP-per-capita just below that of Canada. When their enemies lob weapons at them, ten other countries appear out of the woodwork to shield them and shoot down said weapons.

It is BONKERS that anyone, anywhere is talking about sending them “aid”

Chump’s latest grift, the public trading of his cult social media platform, is now down 50% after two weeks of trading.

Truth Social generates as much annual revenue as a typical McDonalds drive through, has three employees, has never had a profitable quarter, and is supposedly somehow worth 3 billion dollars on paper.

It is difficult to imagine how truly horrifying a total solar eclipse would have been to a primitive civilization.

Seriously. In ours, it manifests in the traffic to and from the event.

If you plan on driving somewhere to see the , my advice to you is this:

As someone who drove several hours to see the last eclipse in the middle of nowhere in Idaho, I cannot stress enough how ridiculous traffic will be when it’s over. Be prepared for a trip to take from 3 to 10 times longer than it normally takes. Know that you will likely be stopped In gridlocked traffic for hours. Pack food. Know that there may not be a bathroom. Plan for the worst.

I’m genuinely interested in finding the original source for my avatar pic. I found it years ago and just thought it was cool, so I saved it without much thought at the time. Does anyone know how to do a reverse image search, or some other way to find the artist who created this image?

Thanks! Would appreciate a little boostage.

@VikingChieftain HOLY SMOKES, that was easy! Thank you! I thought this was going to be a lot more difficult.

Russia reminds me of that old and poorly-aging Onion article about deploying the Very Special Forces.

I know I say this once in awhile, but it’s worth noting:

Every good railroad track inspector out there has found something on the track during their career that has prevented a derailment. The money saved by that derailment that never happened would more than pay for all the wages, insurance, tools, training, and equipment for that track inspector’s entire career.

Today, I found one of those derailment-type track defects, and paid for my whole career for about the fifth time.

@OGjester I'm curious to know what it was, if you are at liberty to say.

OGjester,
@OGjester@stranger.social avatar

@jarkman so, where two rails meet at a joint, they are secured together with a pair of joint bars, and fastened with large bolts. The bars on this particular joint were both broken clean through; so, essentially, there was nothing securing the rails at this joint.

This particular rail was laid when Calvin Coolidge was president, so we have our hands full maintaining it.

Ask any Republican over 40 to tell you what they think Reagan would say about invading a European democracy.

Someone who I know personally - and who I otherwise hold in relatively high regard - was talking unironically about how he agreed with the Pope when he said Ukraine should surrender to Russia. I can’t wrap my head around this. If Russia could make huge land grabs every 5-10 years knowing that their opposition will just wilt and surrender, does anyone think they’d ever stop?

ArmyGirl,
@ArmyGirl@mastodon.world avatar

@OGjester Ukraine should tell the Pope they will give up Kyiv as soon as he surrenders Rome.

Let’s start saying what’s really happening here, in plain words.

Republicans aren’t loyal to this country anymore. They’re loyal to something else now. Maybe it’s Russia; maybe their rich donors have finally discovered the actual dollar amount that purchases patriotism; maybe the draw of fascism is too tempting for them. Whatever it is, they’ve become an eminent and tangible threat to democracies everywhere.

Tell a friend.

I’m going to keep saying this.

Railroads today are in full robber-baron mode; they are out of control with their cuts to manpower and maintenance. Derailment after derailment, there’s a bipartisan effort in Congress to take no action whatsoever with regard to adding regulations or increasing federal inspections. The GOP dream of deregulation has been realized for the railroads at the cost of public safety.

If you have tracks running through your town, think about reaching out to your reps.
