It’s just been pointed out to me that the reason Apple runs a trade-in programme for older devices is so they can reduce the size of the used market, and has fuck all to do with recycling.

That’s blown my tiny mind.

PatternChaser,

@DJDarren I thought they had to be separated into their component parts, metals, plastics, etc, and recycled, or made safe, as appropriate? Reclaim the gold, and so forth?

@ftg @DJDarren

Yes, I thought so. But Darren seemed to be saying otherwise...?

It seems to me that useful thinking combines and , and any other style we can come up with, as needed. Horses for courses! 😃

@Blob_Calder @philosophy

Yes. I also think his division of thought into two types or styles is ... incomplete. "Intuitive" thought covers (IMO) many different ways of thinking, of which knee-jerk, fight-or-flight, thinking is only one.

I think the author is focussing on conspiracy theories, and hasn't given sufficient thought (😆) to his divisions of thought.

Also, there are clear similarities to Kahneman's fast and slow thinking, although he doesn't mention it.

A question I ask all the time in my classes--and it's not rhetorical--also I don't think there is one answer--is: What makes a story?

I love to think about what it is that gives me (or anyone--and it definitely varies) the sense of narrative, the sense of having read a thing that has... what... something like a point? I can't even define what the feeling is--but the sense that it's a story.

What does that for you? What makes a thing a story?

PatternChaser,
@PatternChaser@mastodon.green avatar

@allisonwyss Ooo, good question!

To judge a story is easy: just count how many times it's retold.

But what gives rise to those retellings? That's where the (author's) 𝕞𝕒𝕘𝕚𝕔 comes in, yes? 🤔 😀

More than argument, logic is the very structure of reality

The patterns of reality

Some have thought that logic will one day be completed and all its problems solved. Now we know it is an endless task

@analyticus @philosophy @philosophie @philosophyofmind

"Logic" is used to carry many different, but associated, meanings. Its formal meaning usually refers to the discipline that allows us to examine an argument, and conclude that its structure is such that it can deliver a deduced and reliable conclusion when provided with sound premises.

In everyday usage, we often say "logic" when we are actually referring to Reason. I blame Mr Spock for that... 😐

PatternChaser,
@PatternChaser@mastodon.green avatar

@analyticus @philosophy @philosophie @philosophyofmind

I think it is often mistaken to refer to Logic or Reason, but only because the two are so intimately associated. That, and it isn't always clear where one ends and the other begins.

It would be more useful to have a word like "Rea-gic", that carries both meanings at the same time...? 🤔

All logical systems rely on axioms, which are unfounded assumptions. See , et al.

Twitter/X is dying. I work with a company that has over 12,000 followers, built up though years of creating & sharing good content, and nowadays posts get almost no engagement, and nearly every new follower looks like a fake account or a new user with no followers. At this point I just wish it would die faster.

PatternChaser,
@PatternChaser@mastodon.green avatar

@rasterweb It's a shame. I've been there for a few years. None of the other social media variants suited me as well. And then the idiot came along and bought it for a laugh...

Wouldn't it be cool if you could designate your own reply categories that people could respond to? In the simplest form, agree, disagree, or argument 1, argument 2, etc. We're still stuck in the same dumbass, "just setting up my Twitter" content frames that Jack Dorsey unleashed in 2006. Activity Pub can change all of that with a little more time, effort, and imagination.

63% of data center managers don’t see a “business justification” for collecting water usage data.

"I think that’s just it. There’s no business justification. They’re not thinking about this water in the language of human rights, in the language of planetary sustainability, eco system stability. They’re thinking of it purely in business terms. Water has such a minimal impact in terms of the total cost of operation, that it’s barely worth tracking, or not worth tracking at all."

@philosophy Practical from :

Why is the claim: ”Everything is fair and equal because the same rules apply to everyone” a ?

This cornerstone of modernity has eventually been shown to be false, because it is based on the assumption that humanity experiences ”the world as it is”.

Cognitive & computational neuroscience have strongly pointed toward Kant’s description of human experience to be the correct one: 1/3

PatternChaser,
@PatternChaser@mastodon.green avatar

@gimulnautti @pinecone @philosophy I have found that the differences between the way our 2 political wings split makes for confusion.

Americans don't understand Rep/Dem in the same way as we see Lab/Con.

Libertarianism/Individualism also play a HUGE role in USA.

PatternChaser,
@PatternChaser@mastodon.green avatar

@gimulnautti @pinecone @philosophy You think Libertarianism is not authoritarian? It sounds as though it should have something to do with "liberty", but that doesn't seem (to me) to be the case.

I live in the UK, so maybe my distance contributes to my lack of understanding of American politics?

PatternChaser,
@PatternChaser@mastodon.green avatar

@gimulnautti @pinecone @philosophy Aren't Democrats also committed to Libertarian (Individualist) aims and aspirations? The American Dream, and all that?

PatternChaser,
@PatternChaser@mastodon.green avatar

@gimulnautti @pinecone @philosophy I just thought that, if all (US) parties are Libertarian, there isn't a 3rd axis, is there?

And I don't see that "Authoritarian" is the opposite of Libertarian, as Libertarian doesn't seem to have much to do with Liberty, and a lot to do with ... Authoritarianism?

Maybe it's that I'm a few thousand miles away, in a different country, so I just can't understand how US politics works...?
