Ik lees nu ‘Markering’, een IJslandse dystopische van Fríða Ísberg. Het gaat erover dat mensen een empathietest moeten doen; eerst politici, daarna ambtenaren, bepaalde bedrijven en zelfs hele wijken worden ontoegankelijk voor wie geen geslaagd testresultaat heeft. Spannend om te lezen wat dit doet met de verschillende personages.

Ik kijk wel naar de nos. Zojuist in de Nieuwe kerk een indringend heftig verhaal van een mevrouw met Aziatisch Indische roots, beelden van een regenachtige lege dam (maar wel met een mevrouw die heel blij vertelde dat de mensen die haar gingen fouilleren héél vriendelijk waren. Nu in zonnig Ommen waar ze (zonder jas) aandacht geven aan en vertellen over kamp Erika.

Gardeners: do you have recommendations for reputable resources/experts on planting seeds directly in the soil? I’m in USDA zone 7B with a last frost of April 15 (probably a little earlier this year) and I don’t have energy to start seeds inside and transplant them. They will go into raised metal beds prepared with quality soil and an in-bed vermicompost system. Thank you. Also open to suggestions for hashtags and groups.

@compost I've found a way to boost the compost process here is sunny Central Queensland.

It's been unseasonably dry (and unseasonably hot / cold / wet all around) and the compost had stalled even with some attention to keeping it damp.

Well I tried using a dilute solution of molasses (it's cheap around here as it's a stock food supplement).... and was amazed that the process restarted, ramped-up and escalated to a point where the compost is breaking down faster than ever before.

Obviously the extra nutrients for the microbiota were the solution.

What is happening in Europe and the farmer's protest is something that needed to happen a long time ago.

When I was a child I was taught to never bite the hands of those who feed you, but for the sake of greed and money, biting the hands of farmers has become a hobby and a lobby.

My grandparents had a dairy farm in Europe and I remember as a child how difficult already it was to follow all the rules and regulations. There is nothing new in that. It was already at the time difficult to make an income.

This is why in my opinion laissez-faire is here a folly that has ruined the farmers. We need rules, but to have the same for everyone.

On this account, we stand for farmers because without farms there is no food and because farmers are those who can be a solution to help fix the climate by putting the carbon back into the topsoil.

You tell me. But if you think dropping asbestos plates in front of government buildings, blocking highways and setting fires along them is a way to make your point it is not mine.
The agrolobby is outrageous here. (And apparently in Belgium too because they now all have the same Farmers Defence Force sweaters.

Uitnodiging XR
Op maandag 8 januari om 12:00 uur houdt Extinction Rebellion een aankondiging boven de tunnelbak van de A12 (hoek Theresiastraat en Prins Clauslaan). Daarin zal XR nieuwe acties rond de A12 aankondigen, waarin een einde aan de fossiele subsidies geëist wordt. Het zal deze keer niet bij een blokkade van de A12 blijven en de eerste stap zet XR direct na de aankondiging.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell although I agree I think the biggest changes should come from systemic change, not on a microlevel, but meso and macro. Corporate law, politics (no new permits for fossil projects), tax the rich, ban private jets and superyachts. Make ecocide a punishable by law.
Improve public transport and walking/cycling infrastructure.
Eat more plants and local ones too.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell the individual choice of not driving is micro, the city creating bike lanes is meso, the country banning certain (polluting) vehicles (of stopping the production of certain types) is macro.
And in truth (well, what I think it is( is that we need it all. We need the individual choices, but also the bigger policies and laws. As an individual you can only do so much. And if rabobank keeps financing bad companies and airlines don't have to pay fuel taxes we'll never get there

Apple Serviceberry (Amelanchier lamarckii). I wouldn't normally buy such a large specimen (because younger specimens establish better) but hard to get hold of round here. Which is weird, because these ornamental, edible, North American shrubs/trees are everywhere.

Not the best photo but you get the idea, amelanchiery and tall.

In gesprek met mijn ma nav het gedoe rondom de mensen die hun kinderen meenemen naar demonstraties: "Duh, wij namen jullie toch ook mee naar de anti kernwapen demonstraties?" De eerste keer was ik 7, de 2de keer 9.
Daartussen lagen dan nog de kleinere zaken zoals voor t openblijven van t lokale ziekenhuis etc.
Ik ben opgevoed met demonstreren. En daar blij om!!
