Every now and then, I give other (non-federated) microblogging websites (MBWs) a chance, and they are all very consistent:

  • Threads: I never get any reactions from anyone and zero replies to whatever I post.
  • Bluesky: Similar to Threads, unless I post something in Croatian language. Then I get a reply or two.
  • Twitter: As I have 2500 gaming followers there, sometimes they react to my posts, but a lot less than on the Fediverse. Not even remotely comparable.

Question: Are all other MBWs dead?

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth I think threads just had a failure to launch, last I checked like a week or 2 ago they still had not implemented hashtags, which is basically core for any social media these days.

Twitter was on its way to the grave before Elon bought it and fucked it up. Ultimately it’s gotten overrun by bots and porn.

Mac users often tell me that 8GB of Mac RAM equals 16GB of PC RAM.

@darth While unix is better at memory management than windows, that would be literal black magic.

I wonder how Google measures which app to kill next. This one, in my opinion, was quite good.

Good morning and happy Saturday to the entire today!

It's the weekend, so let's all talk about what we all have planned and hope to accomplish over the next couple of days.

I plan to rest, relax and enjoy some video games. Finally able to get started on No Rest For The Wicked and will of course play more Horizon Forbidden West as well.

Nothing much beyond that, hopefully.

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade Saturday afternoon for me already, started with an early morning, unplanned race. Now I’m recovering from my life choices. Sundays I always do as little as possible. Resting at level 11, or -1. Whichever makes more sense

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade Yeah, basically decided last night I’d do it, 15km but first half’s basically all climbing. lol

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade Yeah, I was meant to do the half marathon last weekend, but injured myself a month back at a race so only actually started running again Monday.

Did well enough, race was mostly fun, the flapjacks after were also great.

Today the mailbox, tomorrow the neighbors house. lol

Do you consider borrowing the same as pirating them? If not, then what do you think the negative effect of pirating is?

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth I would question whether or not piracy has any actual impact, sure there are definitely those who pirate for the sake of it, but I would suspect that a larger percentage are those who simply would not be able to afford it therefore would not have been customers to begin with. There is also the potential positive marketing effect to pirates promoting the game via social media. (1/3)

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

I don’t believe genuine proof exists to argue the impact of piracy one way or another

Back before I was actually employed, I either pirated a game or never played it, those were the only 2 options. Same with movies, music, etc.

Right now series for example I pay for both Hulu and Netflix, and Hulu is not even in my country, Netflix is the only functioning streaming service. (2/3)

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

Much of what I watch is the same, I pirate or I don’t watch it and the vast majority of that was either on Netflix or Hulu and has moved as a result of the rights holder being greasy and setting up their own piss poor excuse for a streaming service which is also not available in my country so… (3/3)

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth It probably is, but all my points above would still technically apply. Are you lending it to “demo”, cause your cheap or cause you genuinely cannot afford it?

I pirated Skyrim for 2 hours and then bought a copy.

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth Nvm, I own it on PS5 too.

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth I dropped pc gaming by the time the VR one came out, and actually not a fan of VR really. Tried the quest 2 but I get too hot in it and I get serious motion sickness in anything first person with movement, I could barely manage super-hot.

I’ll consider a vision if it ever becomes a genuinely viable extension of a Mac, virtual desktops was my actual reason for the quest but the text clarity was abysmal.

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

I could see myself having the same capability when I fly up to the office, or being more creative with my layout. Or even outright replacing my Mac for certain aspects of my job. (2/2)

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth At the time I did not have an external monitor, so just the Mac, but the appeal with virtual monitors is in the “s”. Not sure which app I used but it was capable of 8. I now have a 34” ultra wide so when working I often have 3 to 4 panels of content, so I can generally see 1-4 code files and an emulator. (1/2)

“Digital art book” … let’s be real for a moment. It’s a set of pictures inside the game, which you cannot view unless you pay extra. Now when did this become normal?

No, I will not be quiet. :elmofire:

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth It’s actually not pictures from in the game, they usually things like concept, character and world art, things that predate the games rendered state.

No I would not pay extra for what is fundamentally still a PDF, but I do have a couple of physical game art books.

There is usually also details about how the character or scene was conceived and so on.

Good morning and happy Sunday #Fediverse

It's the last day of the weekend, so let's discuss what are plans are for the day to round it out.

For me, it's going to be a lazy day as much as possible. I don't plan to do much beyond rest and relax and likely play some more Horizon Forbidden West.

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliffwade Sundays I either completely relax to the point of uselessness or I go hiking, today it’s the former as winds are gusting north on 90kph so most trails are closed anyway.

After making the migration a few weeks back, decided the Glorious Brown wooden wrist rest would be the perfect next step. Not sure if I need one, but it looks nice and feels pretty good although it arrived like an hour or so before my work day ended.

@simon No, that windows pretty much south facing, and there is also a tree to the right which blocks pretty much all the direct sunlight. That window is also tinted which reduces overall light, but again, tree.

The massive screen would probably block a decent amount, but it’s only been for for like 6 months of the 3 years I’ve had the office, before that it was just the Mac and never been an issue.

Philosophical question:

Everyone seems to agree that if you lend your book to someone to read, this is okay. The same applies to a Blu-ray PlayStation game or a Nintendo cartridge. Everyone lends and borrows, and everyone is okay with it.

What about this: I lend you my physical book that I have purchased, and while you are holding onto it, you are reading an ePub version of it which you have downloaded from wherever. Is that also okay? I mean, I did lend you my book.

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth Let’s be technically honest, companies are not happy with physical copy lending, and not sure if this was ever true but rumors did mill around about MS doing digital serial keys on hard copies to lock them to the first console they got installed on making physical copy lending impossible, but even if true they’d have been lambasted for that.

At days end their is nothing they can do about it and while is is in many/most/all? (1/4)

RemeJuan,

Cases legal to make backups for yourself, in your example, purely in the eyes of the law, said friend is in possession of an illegal copy, if they had say scanned your book to PDF and then read that, maybe…

The law covers backing up the original, so even the fact of downloading a copy of the original you own is not legal as you never made the backup from the copy you possessed. (2/4)

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@darth Not sure I’d ever use game streaming, feel like far more reliance on 3rd parties all the way from my line provider to the hosted servers.

A friend has no internet this weekend as a construction worker smashed the fibre optic cable. At least even with digital games he can still play, streaming he’d be SOL.

Was a pretty challenging, but fascinating read and most certainly worth it, I never knew just how much of an impact on our daily lives, was made by things Steve Jobs came up with 20/30/40 years ago.

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

Nothing we ever read or even hear, watch, whatever will be 100% factual, even our minds make up stories for us, distort reality, there are times when we cannot even trust our own memories. (2/2)

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu No doubt, but how would one then verify the accuracy of those sources, they could all be as inaccurate as this book, there’s no way to actually know. Hell, we’re entering an age where technology has advanced to a point that you will soon no longer be able to truly trust a live video call.

It’s a fascinating read, I never went into it expecting it to be gospel truth, I’d not open a bible expecting it to be gospel truth. (1/2)

RemeJuan,
@RemeJuan@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu Yeah, have zero interest in learning about why Elon names his kids using hieroglyphs. He’s probably changing the world about as much, but I doubt most of it will actually benefit the world in any lasting positive way.

Don’t think I ever like him, but I liked him more before he decided to make free speech subscription based.
