History PhD. Joachim Boaz maps the more esoteric inclines and declines of science fiction between 1945-1985. When SF tackles the greater morass of things and our oblique interiors he is happy. His website Science Fiction and Other Suspect Ruminations charts these movements. https://sciencefictionruminations.com/

The 1970s: When Lit Went SF (and Vice Versa). A survey of 25 novels that criss-crossed the boundaries between literary fiction and SF, causing some reviewers to exclaim, "My God, he’s committed science fiction!"

@mrundkvist and I wrote about my how difficult it is for me to write about his work — because it’s been so encyclopedically studied and analyzed by fans and academics alike — in this recent review https://sciencefictionruminations.com/2023/05/19/short-story-reviews-philip-k-dicks-the-infinites-1953-and-james-causeys-competition-1955/

@mrundkvist I’ve reviewed a few of his short stories recently for various ongoing review series on my site. I read most of his best known works — like Do Androids— as an older teen

David Gerrold’s Moonstar Odyssey (1977) is one of those "why isn't this read and studied more?" novels... not to be missed by fans of SF that ruminates on gender and society à la Le Guin. My review: https://sciencefictionruminations.com/2019/06/17/book-review-moonstar-odyssey-david-gerrold-1977/

@TomSwirly Feel free to join the lovely discussion on the site!

I've read and disliked The Warlord of the Air. I never got to the sequels.

My favorite Moorcock works so far.

The Black Corridor (1969) (which he wrote with Hilary Bailey): https://sciencefictionruminations.com/2020/06/08/book-review-the-black-corridor-michael-moorcock-and-hilary-bailey-1969/

@JesseRowell While primarily outside of my area of study (most of his SF appeared after 1985), what I have read of his has appealed -- The Wasp Factory for example. I do wish I had discovered him when I read SF more widely (i.e. my late teens).

@JoshuaACNewman Maybe. I just follow whatever isfdb.org says... and unless there's definitive proof, they won't change an entry.

My uncle passed away suddenly a few days ago. He was the type of wonderful person that would give a grouchy, studious, insular, 12-year-old me a book like this…
