“It’s like a whole world of intellectuals and artists got a multibillion-dollar grant from the tech world... But we mistook that, and were frankly actively gaslit into thinking that that was because they cared about art."

A fascinating article on Hollywood, the writers' strike, and the state of film and television. There are so many incredible quotes...

: ""In the good old days," mused DreamWorks co-founder and former Disney CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg late last year, "it took 500 artists five years to make a world-class animated movie. I don't think it will take 10% of that three years out from now."

With Hollywood already replacing staff with generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, people working the industry want rules to govern the new technology and to make sure it does not use images they have created without compensating them.

The U.S. film, television and animation industry employs some 550,000 people and the sector's extensive use of technology makes staff particularly vulnerable to changes wrought by AI.

"There's a high level of exposure to AI for a lot of workers in the entertainment industry," said Adam Fowler, an economist with CVL Economics, a consulting firm that has surveyed attitudes to AI in Hollywood." https://www.context.news/ai/hollywood-animation-vfx-unions-fight-ai-job-cut-threat

It is 40 years since the release of the original . As far removed from that point in time as 1944 was from 1984.

Can you imagine a studio executive in 1984 insisting that they should invest hundreds of millions of dollars in a loose sequel to Double indemnity or the Woman in the Window?

I mean... I wish they were making sequels to from 1944 as this list of releases is insane modern hasn't made this many great films in the last decade.

Even great directors can produce the odd turkey. @RollingStone has created a list of 50 truly terrible movies by otherwise excellent filmmakers. But which do you think topped the list? Once you've cast your vote, take a peek at the story and let us know your thoughts. Apologies for shortening the name of Steven Spielberg's 2008 masterpiece — Mastodon wouldn't allow us to give it its full title, which is, of course, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."

: "OpenAI wants to break into the movie business.

The artificial intelligence startup has scheduled meetings in Los Angeles next week with Hollywood studios, media executives and talent agencies to form partnerships in the entertainment industry and encourage filmmakers to integrate its new AI video generator into their work, according to people familiar with the matter.

The upcoming meetings are just the latest round of outreach from OpenAI in recent weeks, said the people, who asked not to be named as the information is private. In late February, OpenAI scheduled introductory conversations in Hollywood led by Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap. Along with a couple of his colleagues, Lightcap demonstrated the capabilities of Sora, an unreleased new service that can generate realistic-looking videos up to about a minute in length based on text prompts from users. Days later, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman attended parties in Los Angeles during the weekend of the Academy Awards."

Joaquin Phoenix returns in the title role while Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn in the Todd Phillips-directed movie, which is set to premiere this year, possibly at the Venice International Film Festival. L.A. City Announces Hollywood Boulevard Bus/Walk/Bike Upgrades

@jedsetter Unfortunately, transit and cycling advocates are too often pitted against each other for scarce road space.

Instead of removing more auto lanes or parking spaces, the politically easier route is to make a bus/bike combination lane instead.

It's not my favorite design by any means, but a bus-lane is absolutely essential for that one-mile stretch.
