History PhD. Joachim Boaz maps the more esoteric inclines and declines of science fiction between 1945-1985. When SF tackles the greater morass of things and our oblique interiors he is happy. His website Science Fiction and Other Suspect Ruminations charts these movements. https://sciencefictionruminations.com/

Would be a fascinating alt-history jonbar point -- if early Christians hadn't interpreted a metaphoric passage about the fall of Satan (which in turn was a reference to the death of Sargon II) literally.

@Virginicus You had to if you wanted to survive on writing -- most other SF writers had second jobs.

SFRuminations,
@SFRuminations@wandering.shop avatar

@Virginicus Even critically lauded authors -- John Brunner comes to mind -- periodically had to take second jobs to make a living. It took him too long to write his best work so he had to return to cranking crap out to pay the bills.

@Virginicus Silverberg is the best example. He invested early profits and made quite a bit of money as a result.
