Image of the day is Introspection, an in-camera double exposure on film.

Back in the late fall, Louka and I worked on a Photosynthesis session that had a good number of successful "leaf" images. These are probably my favourite leaf images since I started doing them. It's still a fraught process, with frequent failures as I struggle to balance the exposures of the leaf and the model. But I'll be back at it, now that it's the spring and there are leaves to work with again.

@stevenray @limebar I've always been curious about darkroom doubles. I'm guessing you can plan a little bit better, maybe, but it's still going to be hit and miss because you can't see where you're printing, right ?

There's an image by Elliott Erwitt (see attached) that I have in one of his books, but there's no mention of it in the text and I haven't been able to find anything about it online. I've tried to reproduce it in-camera, but it's really hard.

Dizzy Gillespie - Afro. I knew of Dizzy Gillespie, I've heard and loved a number of his compositions, but I hadn't until yesterday listened to a Gillespie record. I hesitated, because I have an ambiguous relationship to Afro-Cuban jazz which I all too often find too tame. No such thing in Afro. The music is vibrant, full of pent-up energy. The percussions drive the whole thing to a fever, the harmony is sparse, often only implied by the bass, and Gillespie's trumpet is then free to soar above that boiling lava. The first three tunes form a suite. They're quite sophisticated with a fuller band and more harmonic texture. The last three are sparse as hell and get my vote for sure. Astounding.

Image of the day is Just the Bust, an in-camera on . This is the second time that I have tried this pose with Lara. The first one was on a whim, when she stretched her arms back to prepare for a pose and I asked her to stop there. I felt that the photo without the arms created a degree of abstraction that was worth exploring. The lighting on that image wasn't entirely to my liking however, so we tried again. I'm quite please with how this new one came out. I've been reading about the history of nude photography a lot and in particularly the seeking for shapes in the human body, and I think this is definitely a direction I want to explore further.

Image of the day is Blue Thistle, a print of a . Often, when I'm aiming for this type of image, I lose detail in the texture, but here I managed to maintain both detail in the texture and in the features. Quite pleased with this print!

Image of the day is Lady Bark, an in-camera #doubleexposure on #film.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This may seem like a simple image to you, but it's groundbreaking to me. I've been trying to get this feel of a face emerging from the bark for months, and never succeeded because the studio lights would outline the face too much. By using a super low powered snoot super close to the face I finally managed to get what I wanted and I'm super pleased about this one. Now I can start using this approach creatively, at last !

Image of the day is Dark Tower, a Washi W paper shot of the Tour Montparnasse. I wish there had been some dark clouds behind it, would have made it more ominous, but that's what I get from taking photos of Paris when I don't live there...

The image of the day is Pinky Hair, an in-camera on . One thing I noticed is that the smooth transitions from light to shadow which, in black and white, translate into a gradual shift in texture do not work in colour, at least not with this film (Lomography Color 100). That's one more thing I don't know if I can't affect. I'd need to try different film stocks. This one kind of works, but the shift is quite brutal nonetheless...

Image of the day is Curls, an in-camera on . With models who have never posed before, there is often a period of tension at the start of a shoot, and usually I can see that tension in the images at the start of the roll. But invariably by frame 10, the models relax, everyone is joking and laughing, and I get these lovely smiles (when the models like to smile, obviously). This shot of Nolwenn is one of these, I think. I love the strand of hair in front of her face, it really balances the treetop effect at the back of her.

My contribution to organised by @yanncphoto is Shush, an in-camera on . For this series, I had a green filter on to shoot the textures in order to increase the contrast. And then I did something stupid: I compensated for the filter even though I was shooting in A mode. So in effect I overexposed my textures. But these super present textures actually worked great on some images (and not so great on others) leading me to possibly do this deliberately with the right choice of texture... True, Lara's face isn't super legible here, but I think it contributes to the air of silent mystery...

My day 5 contribution (theme: weird) to @yanncphoto 's great hashtag is Drill, an image I produced to illustrate the Unknown Armies 3 RPG books by @GregStolze. The thing I love the most about this one is that slight, relaxed smile on Anais' face, that contrasts with Michel's truly panicked look. This is, however, not film so I'm not ticking both boxes for today.

The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. I knew when I first saw the trailer of this vaguely historical comedy series with Noel Fielding in the title role that me and my daughter would love it. And indeed we did, laughed wholeheartedly at the silliness of it all, and the many dick jokes brought on by the lead character's first name. It's nowhere near on par with Blackadder, but it's clearly in the same vein. The series reinvents Dick Turpin (one of the most notorious and ruthless highwaymen in English history) as a shallow but good-hearted man ticking all the boxes of modern deconstruction (vegetarian, gender-fluid, etc.) who falls into highway robbery by accident and likes the fame that comes with it. It's a laugh, although I doubt I'll be watching it again (unlike Blackadder).

An album I can't believe I haven't heard before. In some ways it's a more universal expression of jazz rock than the Mahavishnu Orchestra that led to it. Awesome.

I have a question for you all, my lovely people. When I joined Mastodon I did so on a server where roleplaying friends were, by convenience. Do you think I'm doing myself a disservice in terms of exposure by not being on an "art" or "photography" server ? And if yes, where should I apply ?

The image of the day is Delicate, an in-camera double exposure on film.

This image is part of my Photosynthesis exhibition opening tomorrow in Nantes, at La Lame Vernie Coffee in Trentemoult. It was shot during COVID semi-lockdown in Hong Kong, when both myself and Nelly (the model) had recently been through our stints of quarantine. That rough common experience brought us together creatively for a shoot I will always remember.

If you are in the Nantes / Pays de Loire area, I'd be very grateful for any amplification of the exhibition details.

Brexit Music by Baptiste Trotignon
I have an inclination for (good) jazz covers of pop songs, but here Trotignon wildly exceeds my expectation both in his choice of British rock and pop material and in the inventive execution. Superb.

Kelena Foly by Cheick Tidiane Seck. I discovered Cheick Tidiane Seck by chance last year when I bought Timbuktu purely on the basis of the album cover (drawn by Brüno, one of my favourite graphic artists) and I was impressed by his chops and his ability to blend African motifs seemlessly with jazz markers. So when I saw Kelena Foly, despite a small apprehension due to the fact that it was a solo piano album (always an arduous proposition), I purchased it. And I'm not getting it. Or rather, I don't think it works. Cheick Tidiane Seck plays a very simple music, with very limited harmonic or rhythmic variations, with no singing and only a few declamations throughout. It's just too dry to appeal to my ears. It could very well be that I completely missed what I should have perceived, but I'm not getting it.

Image of the day is Equilibrium, an in-camera double-exposure on film.

I have this jargon for Photosynthesis about the different types of images. This is what I call a "spine" where I shoot a plant with a strong central stem and then align that stem (as best I can) to the model's own spine. When they work they can be quite spectacular, but even a small shift ruins the effect. I'm really pleased with this one, the first in a long time that I find stunning (if I say so myself...)

This is another image I really love that I never published before for no other reason that, at the time it was produced, I had other images to put forward. I love how the fanned out fingers seem to balance the lateral treetop technique that fans out the back of Margaux's head and back.
