The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. I knew when I first saw the trailer of this vaguely historical comedy series with Noel Fielding in the title role that me and my daughter would love it. And indeed we did, laughed wholeheartedly at the silliness of it all, and the many dick jokes brought on by the lead character's first name. It's nowhere near on par with Blackadder, but it's clearly in the same vein. The series reinvents Dick Turpin (one of the most notorious and ruthless highwaymen in English history) as a shallow but good-hearted man ticking all the boxes of modern deconstruction (vegetarian, gender-fluid, etc.) who falls into highway robbery by accident and likes the fame that comes with it. It's a laugh, although I doubt I'll be watching it again (unlike Blackadder).

The image of the day is Delicate, an in-camera double exposure on film.

This image is part of my Photosynthesis exhibition opening tomorrow in Nantes, at La Lame Vernie Coffee in Trentemoult. It was shot during COVID semi-lockdown in Hong Kong, when both myself and Nelly (the model) had recently been through our stints of quarantine. That rough common experience brought us together creatively for a shoot I will always remember.

If you are in the Nantes / Pays de Loire area, I'd be very grateful for any amplification of the exhibition details.

Near me there are no cacti large enough that I can use them for textures. On a business trip to Berlin in March, I found a couple of hours to check the Botanical Garden and the desert glasshouse there had these amazing cacti. This is one of the images that came out of it.

Back in the late fall, Louka and I worked on a Photosynthesis session that had a good number of successful "leaf" images. These are probably my favourite leaf images since I started doing them. It's still a fraught process, with frequent failures as I struggle to balance the exposures of the leaf and the model. But I'll be back at it, now that it's the spring and there are leaves to work with again.

Image of the day is Equilibrium, an in-camera double-exposure on film.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have this jargon for Photosynthesis about the different types of images. This is what I call a "spine" where I shoot a plant with a strong central stem and then align that stem (as best I can) to the model's own spine. When they work they can be quite spectacular, but even a small shift ruins the effect. I'm really pleased with this one, the first in a long time that I find stunning (if I say so myself...)

I don't know if that texture was actually chervil (I somehow doubt it, just growing randomly in a park) but whatever it is I love the delicate little branches. And they look like chervil. Anyway, they make for a great texture, as you can see here.

Image of the day is Four-Legged, an in-camera on .

I have recently had a number of opportunities to shoot more images from my "one and more" project, multiple exposures of the same model. I'm quite pleased with this attempt. While I'm not getting the perfect curve of the backs that would make this truly special, I like the fact that the buttocks are only faintly in the image, leading the viewer to question what they are seeing.

I have a question for you all, my lovely people. When I joined Mastodon I did so on a server where roleplaying friends were, by convenience. Do you think I'm doing myself a disservice in terms of exposure by not being on an "art" or "photography" server ? And if yes, where should I apply ?

Image of the day is Lady Bark, an in-camera #doubleexposure on #film.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This may seem like a simple image to you, but it's groundbreaking to me. I've been trying to get this feel of a face emerging from the bark for months, and never succeeded because the studio lights would outline the face too much. By using a super low powered snoot super close to the face I finally managed to get what I wanted and I'm super pleased about this one. Now I can start using this approach creatively, at last !

Image of the day is Bowler Hat Brigade, a coffee toned on Hahnemühle Harmony HP paper.

From the same session as "Cassandra in Paris" came this composite shot (done in Photoshop) that I thought was very moody and ever so slightly surreal. Once I saw the rendering of the coffee toned cyanotypes, I had to try it. I'm sorely tempted to include a bowler hat brigade in my next RPG just so I can use this image...

As I was digging through my archives for pictures of Paris to coffee tone, I stumbled upon this image from a session with models back in 2013. I loved the way the stairs fall in the shadows, and Cassandre's fey look on this image. I decided to try out the same process, and I'm pretty pleased with the results !

There's a big part of on-site experimentation in figuring out poses that will work when working with a super wide-angle lens (this must have been shot at around 20mm or even wider). This one came by chance, and I quite like it. The wide-angle does a bit of a job on Elly's head, but not as much as I feared.

Mana Blues by Grant Haua. I really liked Swamp Thing, the garage blues band that Grant Haua and drummer Michael Barker had founded and released three albums for. I knew they'd broken up, but not that Grant Haua was pursuing a solo carreer. I stumbled upon this album (apparently produced by French label Dixiefrog) and thought I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, what I found was much more mainstream than the gritty music Grant and Michael produced. It's not bad, but it sounds like the same old same old blues rock I've heard a zillion times. Undoubtedly done with love, but lacking in identity, with the exception of the first track and its Maori intro. I wish more of the album had been along that vein...

A short but in your face EP which proves Galactic still has it (and then some) and that they can still fish the best collaborations in town.

I have an inclination for (good) jazz covers of pop songs, but here Trotignon wildly exceeds my expectation both in his choice of British rock and pop material and in the inventive execution. Superb.

An album I can't believe I haven't heard before. In some ways it's a more universal expression of jazz rock than the Mahavishnu Orchestra that led to it. Awesome.

Doors of HK is a series of prints on Hahnemühle Harmony paper.

Over the years I took photos of many doors in Hong Kong. Most are on the dingy side rather than the majestic although the odd temple door can really impress...

A man is walking past a doorway that has been set up as a street food stall. Blue and white.
A door on which an old ladder is leaning. To the right is a derelict clock face. Blue and white.
A metallic door in a wall covered with tags. Blue and white.

What always strikes you in Rome is the light. Such gorgeous light. I look at the way it lights the doors, and I shoot sooooo many doors...

Monumental doorway in white marble with a woman's head surrounded by spider motifs overlooking the doorway. The door itself is rectangular and much smaller. Blue and white.

A large arched door in an old stone wall. The door is made of square wood panes and surmounted by a half-disc grille. A woman has just exited the door and is walking away towards the left. Blue and white.

Ivy Pose is an in-camera on .

I'd forgotten about this photo. It was taken at a low moment in my life when I was stuck in Europe and didn't know when I could get home to Hong-Kong due to changes in COVID quarantine rules. I first messed up an entire session by underexposing the entire roll of portraits. A few weeks later the same models agreed to try it again, and I got some really great images. Which did a world of good to my morale. Creativity is a grand medecine.

Image of the day is Full-body Print, an in-camera on . In Photosynthesis, with the right lighting and the right texture, models can be properly dressed up with plants. This is what happened here with Hortense. I find it fascinating that everything is visible to the camera and yet everything is hidden as well. I had to censor it for the Meta platforms though, because just the idea of something being visible triggers the bots and/or the prude users...

Delicate Lashes is an in-camera on FP4 . I love those well defined little plants that look like a sky full of stars when double exposed, but when I saw such a bed of plants with long herbs growing on top, I figured I was onto something special, and I was right (I think). The combination of the two really works on this photo of Aurore's back.
