Someone said it's important say this publicly in the US: so I will. (And I think each of us should, online and to friends)

This November I will vote for Biden.

I would regard not voting for Biden, particularly in: PA, OH, MI, WI, IN, IL,VA, GA, FL, AZ, ME, NC, NH, etc. as a huge error. I'd be disappointed to find out anyone I knew didn't vote. It's one of a long list of things we need to do. We can't skip it.

And still? We deserve better choices, and in the future we shall have them.

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@futurebird @ravenonthill To be honest it's like they are trying to lose. https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2024/04/03/hillary-clinton-fallon-interview-biden-trump-stephen-a-smith-nn-vpx.cnn
Because they are paid by the same people that pay the republicans, it's hard to hear this and not reach the conclusion that they are actively trying to throw the election.

Today I brought my cat in because I thought she had allergies... Turns out she most likely has cancer. This came after my father popped positive for a blood test for heart failure. This has to be my least favorite weekend ever.

If you are wondering
why so many are willing
to protect their eyes
with special glasses
during an eclipse
but refuse
to protect their health
with a respirator
during a pandemic
just remember
that eclipses last minutes
while pandemics last years.

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@Clarity @plaguepoems Except for people who like having brains because mild to moderate infection can age your brain 7 years. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/covid-19-iq-brain-age-cognitive-health/
And repeat infections can damage your immune system and give you long covid even if you escape it the first 5/6 times. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20240114/Immune-dysregulation-in-long-COVID-patients-uncovered-in-new-study.aspx
And it increases your likelihood of having a heart attack, although no one says by how much https://nyulangone.org/news/study-helps-explain-how-covid-19-heightens-risk-heart-attack-stroke
And it can give you a mental health disorder. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/evidence-based-living/202402/do-covid-infections-impact-mental-health

What really gets me about that trash NPR article written by a gaslighting POS is that her entire gripe is that she can't eat INDOORS at restaurants.

THAT is what she deems an acceptable trade for the death of her husband.

What the fuck is wrong with "ordinary" people?

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@PacificNic death is bad but have you ever been bedridden for a year? I'm privileged to not be homeless but this is very much how people end up homeless. And with all the laws we currently have making homelessness illegal, it's also how you end up in jail. The alternative? Suicide? It's bananas. I hope she's ready to financially support her husband if she cripples him instead of killing him.

Six students have measles in an outbreak at a Florida elementary school.

How did Florida's health department respond?

Their Surgeon General sent out a letter that supports parents sending unvaccinated children to school during the outbreak and doesn't recommend vaccination.

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@luckytran and apparently measles can wipe out immune memory completely.

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@samhainnight @luckytran I know that Covid can impair the immune system. Do you have a study you can provide?

One of the most ridiculous “middle ground” policies is when hospitals require masks in exam areas, but not in waiting rooms, hallways, lobbies or elevators. Airborne viruses don’t care about the “middle ground.” Not requiring masks in all areas puts patients and staff at risk.

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@luckytran And then they think that masks don't work. It's so frustrating that they don't seem to understand aerosol spread.

I was really struggling to understand certain aspects of the Discourse until I saw someone point out that, due to the way US foreign policy has been mythologized over the years, many people believe the President literally has a "CIA, overthrow that government" button on his desk and that Biden is just refusing to press it to get rid of Netanyahu.

I guess it's next to the "magically forgive all student loans without a bill from Congress" button they've also been begging him to push.

It shouldn’t need saying that any path that runs through murdered kids (anyone’s kids) and grandmas (anyone’s grandmas) isn’t leading to a better world.

Or that the hatred of Jewish people for their Jewishness is so real and terrifying and dangerous.

Or that Palestinians deserve the same freedom to make a good life as everyone else.

Or that every atrocity is wrong and worth trying to prevent.

I feel so choked with grief but when these ideas are controversial it feels necessary to speak.

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@kissane it would be nice if you wouldn't conflate Jews and Israel. A lot of Jews don't and have not supported Israel in a long time. A lot of us feel that what Israel has done and is doing is aggravating Anti-Semitism. Netanyahu is Israel's version of Trump and is under investigation. He is a right-wing fascist terrorist that had the entire country protesting him not so long ago. He has formed a coalition of lunatics who are willing to gas their own people.

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@kissane Because the conflict is between Israel and Palestine so to mention Palestine without Israel but instead mention Jews implies Jews in place of Israel... Now that you point it out, I see what you are trying to do.

Harlan Crow and a few billionaires have provided Clarence Thomas with:

-38 destination vacations

-26 private jet flights

-6 helicopter flights

-Yacht voyages

And we're going to let Thomas rule on Moore v. US, which could permanently shield billionaires from a wealth tax?

Today in misinformation: no, Janet Yellen did not say "we can afford two wars". Sky News literally made up a more rage-bait-y quote to put in her mouth and ran that as their headline (and then had to retract it). I won't provide them with clicks as a reward, but if you go read the article, what she actually is quoted as saying is that we can afford to stand with Ukraine against Russia and with Israel against Hamas.

Which is true, and a perfectly reasonable thing to say.

Ukraine, in particular, has been doing quite well off, basically, obsolete/hand-me-down equipment that we just had sitting around, and is not taking away any money from your favorite social cause.

But it's worth being extremely wary of people who are suddenly critical of the budget and concerned about fiscal responsibility when the "budget", such as it is, is being used to avert a genocide.

SarahSanger, (edited )
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@ubernostrum You know that Israel cut off food, water & electricity to 2 million people? Half of which are children, half of the population are children because Gaza has restricted medicine, clean food & water as a result of Israeli apartheid.

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@ubernostrum my bad, let me be more on point... I think the implication that you might have missed is that we aren't just averting a genocide but that we are also funding one.

Joe Biden just made me cry.. He talked about the phone call we get when we lose someone. My youngest son called me crying to let me know my wife had died 9 years ago and 5 years ago when the police called me to tell me my oldest son had died. Joe knows sorrow and he knows how to comfort.

We are lucky to have such a good human as our leader.

God protect him.

What’s your take on the “Are mental disorders brain disorders?” debate?

@awaisaftab and I summarize our positions here:

https://awaisaftab.substack.com/p/advancing-neuroscientific-understanding

Curious to hear your thoughts as well. Is it overblown? Even if so, once we set aside the obvious, what interesting questions remain? Top down causation? The right conceptual framework to think about what is going wrong? Something else entirely?

SarahSanger,
@SarahSanger@fosstodon.org avatar

@NicoleCRust @awaisaftab "mental disorders" are mostly physiological. Think hypothyroid storm before we knew what a hypothyroid storm was or low blood sugar in a diabetic or seizures. To the dark ages they look like they are possessed, to us they have a "mental disorder" and in the future they will be treated physiologically.

Right wingers are reacting to the news of a new mutated COVID variant with a lot of "what a surprise, bringing back COVID restrictions just in time for the election!" type stuff.

I think the right drastically overestimates the left's interest in COVID restrictions at this point. Even the most liberal people I know are absolutely done with COVID stuff. An attempt to bring lockdowns back is straight-up doomed.

Frankly if there are any restrictions in place at the next election, Biden loses it.

It used to be Democrats versus Republicans, liberals versus conservatives, left versus right.

That is over.

It is now democracy versus authoritarianism.

The 2024 election is fast approaching. Know the stakes.

@rbreich but when the dems refuse a primary... Is it really democracy vs authoritarianism?
