When I watch movies about kings and their courts, I always wonder why the fuck anyone would want to be a member of that shit. Kissing crazy ass all day long, subject to the whims of imbeciles.🙄
@StillIRise1963@mloxton
Afaik people back then were much the same: there were some ass-kissers who hung around The King, but there were also plenty of jesters (medieval) and cartoonists (renaissance) mocking that behavior.

Fuck off with the fake self-depreciating and fake modesty of the ruling class.

I feel Israel is a bit overused.
But there seem to be pretty different reactions to f.i. 'Eastern Ukraine wants to split of' versus 'southern Sudan wants to split of'. Pretty much any resources-rich province is going to find an ally willing to support their, uhm, 'struggle for independence' (and cook up that struggle where it doesn't exist yet)

I wonder how he compares to the president of El Salvador, who brought safety to the populace (in ways that many social-democrats would disagree with)
At the Voting Village, Susan Greenhalgh called Internet voting "the Theranos of Voting" - something scientists agree isn't possible to do properly, but vendors try to sell anyway. Our panel explored the question "If I can shop online, why can't I vote online?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0RiIRGPMYc

My take on it is that either you choose to trust the system or you don't: if you don't than no amount of re-telling will convince you that Trump lost, if you do than reasonable precautions are enough.
@br00t4c
I'm reminded a bit of Lucia de Berk:
-she kept writing 'i have to do this' in her diary
-babies died when she was around
She was also innocent: the hospital wanted a skapegoat for high mortality and the police kept changing the dossier such that only the deaths that occurred when she was around were classified as suspicious
Muting instead of blocking makes sense most of the time, but why take away something that is useful some of the time if it takes more resources to get rid of it than to leave it. It must be a problem for him or the service. What would that be? Are advertisers complaining about being blocked? Does he just hate being blocked? He can't think it creates an unnecessarily negative environment after all the assholery he's supportive of. Just weird.

Hopefully. I still see way too many news-outlets default to Twitter and Instagram, occasionally embed LinkedIn or TikTok posts, and not really anything beyond that.
Humans did not evolve and have never existed on a planet like the one our capitalist rulers are bringing forth. Perhaps some of us will survive in isolated pockets here and there, but today’s complex and hyper-connected global society most certainly will not.

On LinkedIn i saw a guy push 'solar cycles' and connect them to boom-bust cycles. It was as well-researched as you'd expect.
So much effort put into diversions, usually playing to the ego of middle-class middle-aged white men (who always keep falling for these 'one easy trick to make money and own the libs' stories)
Growing up Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher told us that capitalism went hand in hand with freedom and democracy.
Today we can see that capitalists can quite comfortably walk hand in hand with authoritarianism and fascism to maintain and consolidate their wealth and power.
@breadandcircuses@danwentzel
From the 'empty land' myths around communities who held land in communal (usually at the level of villages) ownership instead of personal ownership, to an unforgiving might-makes-right doctrine and plantation systems on different continents that were full of forced labor.
When you look back at how colonialism and capitalism were sold there is so much ideological overlap. Always this idea that 'this is just how the world works, because of evolution'
Seems to me that within each socio-economic group, the same exact type of ugly hierarchy the wealthy ascribe to is reenacted/emulated on a smaller scale. Sick, twisted, embedded, fucked up.
@nf3xn@carnage4life
In a real market-economy they'd quickly be outcompeted by companies that do use (and thus test) their own product.
In reality they'll probably hang on way too long because of inertia and kickbacks.
> You see, if somebody robs a store, it's a crime and the state is all set and ready to nab the criminal. But if somebody steals from the commons and from the future, it's seen as an entrepreneurial activity and the state cheers and gives them tax concessions rather than arresting them. We badly need an expanded concept of justice and fairness that takes mortgaging the future into account.
