Today's Patreon-exclusive translations from German folklore cover "treasure fires" - a mysterious phenomenon known to appear in the countryside where quick-witted observers can make their fortune.

Be informed so that you will know what to do if you stumble across them!

@juergen_hubert There's the example in Dracula:

"Then as time went on, and I had got somewhat bolder, I asked him of some of the strange things of the preceding night, as, for instance, why the coachman went to the places where he had seen the blue flames. He then explained to me that it was commonly believed that on a certain night of the year—last night, in fact, when all evil spirits are supposed to have unchecked sway—a blue flame is seen over any place where treasure has been concealed."

The Japanese ohaguro-bettari is a yokai that appears to be a beautiful woman in her wedding gown, often found near shrines or temples. The ohaguro-bettari calls over young men, who are horrified to learn when she turns to them that her face is a featureless white dome with a gaping mouth of blackened teeth. Dying one's teeth black with iron filings and vinegar was popular with 10th-19th century aristocrats and samurai.

This detailed ivory relief is thought to depict the goddess Roma ~ C5th–C6th CE

Roma appeared with a helmet and staff, and holds the globe in her hand while being crowned by the goddess Victory.

This is part of a diptych showcasing a personification of Constantinople but I’m afraid I don’t have a picture of that side. But pairing these two together would make perfect sense in a world where Constantinople was increasingly the central city and Rome a historic symbol…

Jorge Luis Borges invented the myth of the mirror people in his Manual de zoología fantástica.

An excerpt:
"The first to awaken will be the Fish. Deep in the mirror we will perceive a very faint line and the color of this line will be like no other color. Later on, other shapes will begin to stir. Little by little they will differ from us; little by little they will not imitate us. They will break through the barriers of glass or metal and this time will not be defeated.”

Anyone in the Fediverse watching ?

I have enjoyed the first 4 episodes and the songs in particular.

@AimeeMaroux Oh yes! I somehow came across the spinoff series (on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/c/SpindleHorse, different characters same setting) so when I saw Hazbin Hotel I jumped on it. I worry about Angel Dust crowding out the other characters, but we'll see.

Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire,
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate

Is also great,
And would suffice."

There is a Jewish tradition that the luz bone houses the soul, though scholars differ on exactly where in the spine the luz is located. It will not decay and will be the source of recreating the body at the time of resurrection.
