Could just be my weird local cohort, but have you noticed this linguistic thing with youngish kids where they preface statements, almost like a comic header? E.g. instead of "I think [explanation about thing]" it's "What I think about [thing]: [explanation]." So, like, instead of "I think what's going on is that the cat is shy because she lived in the wild" you hear "What I think about the cat: she's shy because she lived in the wild."
@ZachWeinersmith I would take that to mean they’re emphasizing their belief or their opinion on the subject. Making it explicit that they’re not talking about a “fact” of the world but how they perceive it.
@pixelscience@glennf I think that’s it exactly. Fundamentally I don’t think the ad is that bad but rhe zeitgeist through which it’s viewed is a lot darker. It’s not quirky, it’s an act of destructive.
@davemark I do this with photos. My library is larger than my internal drive so I store everyone on an external. While it doesn’t get a Time Machine backup, I clone the drive with Superduper and Backblaze. I do the same thing with my music library.
So far (knock on wood) the system has worked really well.
I find this DOJ Apple lawsuit, and the river of explainers, points and counterpoints it spawned incredibly difficult to completely wrap my head around.
@davemark I really struggle with the interpretation. I know the DOJ is full of smart people, but as a tech enthusiast the lawsuit is kind of baffling. I’m sure the actual trial documents will be better but this initial filing and press conference do not seem like 5 years of work.
@davemark I did a demo this week and I completely agree. I can still see the edges where they’re waiting on technology to catch up but I really feel like they nailed the interaction model.
I had the same feeling playing with the scroll wheel on the iPod for the first time. It just clicked and I was going.
@davemark Did you get to see one of the night scenes? The individual leading my demo had me turn the pacific coast location to night and than watch the Avatar clip. The lighting on the rocks and environment was stunning.
Apple will be announcing how it intends to comply with the E.U. Digital Markets Act later today, what concessions it will be making on pricing and fees, and what demands it will place on third-party payment providers and sideloaded apps.
The E.U. will then review Apple’s proposal in the coming weeks, and detail changes if necessary.
I believe the era of the 30% tax may be coming to an end, after 21 years of the iTunes Store.
For 9 years and 470 episodes, I’ve been the cohost of a podcast called #Rocket. It ended this week. The full episode is great https://relay.fm/rocket/470 but I went ahead and clipped my goodbye message. I mean everything I’m saying/crying through here and I thank all of you for listening and supporting us over the years.
"We took steps to protect our users by blocking techniques that exploit fake credentials in order to gain access to iMessage. These techniques posed significant risks to user security and privacy, including the potential for metadata exposure and enabling unwanted messages, spam, and phishing attacks. We will continue to make updates in the future to protect our users."
@davemark In the long run, I don’t know how much of a technical problem this is instead of a reputational one. Could Apple do something to break this? Probably? But do they want to get into a cat and mouse game with a small indie developer? I don’t know that scrutiny would be worth locking it the small handful of people who would do this.
@davemark I don’t know. I don’t doubt they hate it, but they also apparently just skated by the interoperability requirements in the EU. Actively working to undermine something like this would be a bad look. Maybe they wait and hope it blows over but that would be a heck of a gamble.
Nonsense; Apple's Messages app already has an unencrypted pathway — using SMS. And unencrypted RCS, as of next year. A bridge to a competing service could also be unencrypted in the same form. If you really need to message somebody not using an encrypted service, you should get a warning in the app, but it should still be possible. It will be possible, and unencrypted, if other services interoperate with RCS directly
@daringfireball Do you think they would need to do more to allow multiple faces to unlock the iPad? It seems like you would really need multiuser support for that because it seems like iPads are more of a shared device.
@gruber Yeah, that makes sense. I guess for me the iPad is a family device that 4 people share. I was thinking more akin to a lite version of the Macs user experience. I suppose that’s not something that Apple is necessarily interested in though.
I took a lot of flak for a comment I made a few days ago, about being "over" masking. I didn't address most of the responses but I absorbed them all. I think it's true there are still good reasons to wear a mask, especially any time community risk increases.,..
@danielpunkass I think it’s a challenging risk calculus. I minimize my time indoors with groups, but I have two kids who are in school and aren’t going to wear masks. That’s the vast majority of my risk exposure so I’m not sure what changes when I where a mask.
