I’ve been reading way too many recently published #CallOfCthulhu scenarios that feature a perfunctory investigation before the Investigators board a train to creepy town that is a one way exercise in hit point and SAN attrition. Sure, some of the imagery is very creepy, but something is definitely missing, that being real problem solving and meaningful choices.

I sat down and watched Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves tonight. Despite the oft slipshod plot, shallow characterizations, and sometimes questionable VFX, I quite enjoyed it. Regé-Jean Page and Hugh Grant steal the movie, but the rest of the cast acquits themselves nicely, it maintains a consistent, breezy comedic tone, and there are many bits of clever action - plus a chonky red dragon. The speak with dead sequence was the highlight for me; I was LMAO.

This morning, I read Bryce Lynch's latest review of a Miskatonic Repository scenario (spoiler alert, he hated it). He made some great points about its, and by extension, most CoC scenarios', verbosity and user unfriendly layout. That never bugged me much b/c quite frankly, I'm used to it, and I've always been able to memorize tons of info. But now I'm imagining CoC scenarios utilizing layouts/formats used by modern trad games like and .

I started watching Columbo at the start of the pandemic (my Dad was a big fan of the show, so I had watched some of the later TV movies with him as a kid), but kind of dropped it. I thought I got farther, but I guess I stopped in the middle of season 3. Started watching again tonight with Robert Culp's third appearance as the murderer.

I'm unhappy with the layoffs affecting WotC and Hasbro's leadership but found some of the online reactions strange. Then it clicked, this hadn't happened in about a decade (at least not at this scale), so what was once a regular occurrence during the 3e and 4e eras, is completely foreign to the vast majority of 5e players. How things change but also stay the same.
