We often tell new folks to to follow , but we never tell people how to do it or which ones to follow. To follow a hashtag from the web client (it varies on the apps), click on the hashtag, and then click on the person icon with a +. Once you have done that, the icon changes to a person with an x; clicking on the x icon will also unfollow the hashtag (see my before and after screenshots). You can see which hashtags you follow by accessing the menu next to your profile name.

The UW Board of Regents fired the Chancellor of UW-La Crosse today for creating consensual porn with his wife on Only Fans (plus sex positive activism). They cited reputational harm, but he was going to retire at the end of this academic year anyways, so now the regents are going to learn about the Streisand Effect. Some of their public comments seem hyperbolic and puritanical to me, like they're kowtowing to the GOP in the state legislature.

Here are my tips for using and the

  1. Follow anyone you find even remotely interesting (be smart, do a little bit of due diligence before clicking "Follow.") Bonus if they're on a different server than you.

  2. Follow every hashtag that you're interested in.

  3. Use hashtags in your post that you know other people are likely to follow.

  4. Interact, interact, interact!!! Reply, boost, favorite...

  5. Create a pinned introductory post w/ all your interests as hashtags!

I like 90 % of the interactions on mastodon but for the other 10 % - yeeeeeah I really wish there was a 'post only to this group' setting.

Yes I know there is functionality to just use everyone's name/handle and then make a toot private, but that's not the functionality I'm after. I want to be able to add names to a group and then have only those people (and instance admins obviously) see that post

There are fandom / hobby discussions I wanna have without having to fight trolls. Y'know ?
