~ Custom images of Fedora Atomic Desktops ~

Based RPM-OSTree, this is a collection of container images using Fedora's support for OCI/Docker containers as a transport and delivery mechanism for operating system content.

That's nerdspeak for the ultimate Linux client: the reliability of a Chromebook, but with the flexibility and power of a traditional Linux desktop. At long last, we've ascended.

Homebrew is now installed for you with the latest images of Bluefin, Aurora, and Bazzite. We don't have to strongly recommend installing it anymore because it's right there!

Homebrew is a great package manager especially for CLI apps. Give it a whirl if you haven't already.

Yesterday at Red Hat Summit @jorge and @cgwalters presented to a full house of Red Hat employees to walk through the state of atomic / image-based Linux and where we can go from here.

Fedora and Red Hat are looking at what we're doing with bootable containers and are interested in carrying that forward!

Big thank you to @dogphilosopher for an update to flatpaks on Bluefin. Now flatpaks can be preinstalled from the ISO rather than having to download them on first boot in order to provide the intended experience. That means @thunderbird on the dock by default!

Awesome step forward for us to be able to bring you intended apps by default without straying from @flathub

If you can help with testing the new ISOs, please see below for instructions.

Q: Which is the best gaming Linux distro in the world?

A: The one that works for you. :)

Of course we're very excited about Bazzite and the unique ways it can address problems as a custom image of Fedora Atomic. However, we share lots of packages with other distros like Nobara and ChimeraOS.

One of the Bazzite maintainers wrote a great reply to this question in our forum: https://universal-blue.discourse.group/t/bazzite-vs-nobara/830

Bazzite is on The Verge's radar!

In this article about startup Playtron trying to enter the handheld OS market with a Fedora Atomic based solution, @seanhollister mentions that he's currently looking into Bazzite. Fingers crossed that it works out for him, because we think it's pretty great. :)

Playtron is going after the market we knew existed, which is why Bazzite exists. Good luck to them! Vendors, hit us up!

Been curious about what it's like to use Bluefin? Here's a quick tour of it, walking through some of the main changes we make to Silverblue!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_yyyUMecwo

For more stability, the Bluefin custom image defaults to GTS (grand touring support), meaning that we hang back one release of Fedora. It brings stability in general, but specifically to all the GNOME extensions we use.

Bluefin is feature complete!

Between some tweaks to brew, the implementation of offline ISO installers, and moving to grand touring support by default, we're cruising toward the release of Fedora Linux 40 to come out of beta.

There is still one more exciting change that is being considered for down the line, but overall we're ready to go. 🏎️

What's something you wish was included in Bazzite or Bluefin?

UniversalBlue, to linux
@UniversalBlue@fosstodon.org avatar

Containers are a big part of how uBlue and atomic systems work. Let your OS install be a stable host and use containers to cleanly tinker or manage applications no matter what distro it's packaged for.

Here's a primer on how container images work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0NuOlA2xDc

Bazzite started as a SteamOS alternative to the Steam Deck. Cool. Expanding Bazzite to other handhelds? Makes sense. Making it available for general PC usage? Also good.

How about making a Bazzite VM and then streaming that content to a Logitech G Cloud?

@taoofmac did just that, as well as write a general review of the handheld. Pretty neat!

uBlue and Fedora Atomic (shout out to them!) come with different expectations for how to install software. Whereas on most distros you install software any which way, with an atomic system there are ways that are more recommended than others.

The recommended order for installing apps is:

  1. Flatpak
  2. Distrobox/Toolbx/Containers
  3. Fleek/Nix (uBlue only)
  4. Laying with rpm-ostree
