String pinsetters have ruined Tenpin Bowling for me.

I used to love bowling but I'm done with it now. I get it saves a lot of money (for the bowling centre) etc etc but it absolutely sucks for someone who actually liked the game and was pretty decent at it. They play differently and it's annoying getting more or less than you should have.

The real story isn’t that someone photoshopped a picture.

The story is that people are so damn nosey about other peoples lives that someone felt compelled to try and release a photo and got photoshop out to try and pacify the nosey people who can’t leave people to have a private life.

"Let's Use Microsoft 365" they all blindly say and just shove all the data and secrets for the trades in someone's storage without a second thought.

Meanwhile...

"Microsoft says Kremlin-backed hackers accessed its source and internal systems

Midnight Blizzard is now using stolen secrets in follow-on attacks against customers."

ahaha.. I visited a business today and looked at their phone bills / agreement. They rented (and won, at the end of the term) an NEC phone system with 20 hand sets over 5 years. Total cost of that came to £12,780. Twelve thousand pounds for a 20 extension phone system, not including line rental and call costs.
Insanity.

VModifiedMind,
@VModifiedMind@know.me.uk avatar

@CenturyAvocado that’s nothing. I’ve a customer that was quoted £8000 for 5 years for…

5 polycom entry level handsets
Line rental
…and not a lot else.

Yeah. Really.

Then there’s also the customer that almost signed a 8 year agreement for a “hihi” setup. Cost once you factored in the real cost after the brief “free” and “half price” periods… just shy of £65k. Also 5 handsets. Insane.

Re last: Please please please, don't use ! We blind people call it HateCaptcha, and it's for a reason. Their accessibility so-called innovative technology is simply broken and doesn't work reliably. You can't imagine how much time I spent fighting with this so-called accessibility cookie. Please don't use it, for goodness sake.

You know @IceCubesApp is pretty good. Almost thinking it’s better than @ivory now. But I like both so I’ll continue to have zero devotion to one cause.

Now can someone please make a non tragic mastodon app for android?!

Looking for a for a system, ideally with a powerline backhaul (though maybe WiFi 6 makes that unnecessary?). My router handles the main network stuff like fibre uplink. DHCP and DNS, so no need for that, but multiple VLAN support would be good so I can make a proper isolated IoT network as well as guest. Any recommendations?

I’ve got an aging Deco P9 system which has been ok, but more open and expert-friendly would be better!

VModifiedMind,
@VModifiedMind@know.me.uk avatar

@Floppy @CenturyAvocado power line is so variable you just end up hearing about it again and again even if it works, especially as broadband speeds rise. They’re annoyingly useful in awkward situations but they come with frustrating ongoing issues.

EE: we are jacking up prices again.

Me: Excellent, I’ll cancel some stuff to offset the price rise, call EE.

Get mad at the 5 different menus to get to someone…

Speak to person, no hassle to cancel, asked why “because you keep putting prices up and you don’t improve my network experience, it just gets worse plus those massive increases customers get aren’t being proportionately passed onto staff so on principle I’ll slowly cut off more EE stuff every round of increases”

is it normal to have a membership to something that gives you 'unlimited' something, and then to actively track use of said thing to make sure you get really good value from it?!

As in, has spreadsheets level of 'tracking'?

Just a reminder to small business owners…

You don’t have to take every sale, don’t have to work with anyone you don’t like working with or is more hassle than the benefit they bring.

You also don’t have to put up with a customer trying to abuse your resources, energy etc just because they think as they’re customers they have the balance of power “because customers are always right” (they absolutely aren’t).

Business relationships are two way. Don’t be in abusive ones.

Why don’t you like the new Windows UI networking settings…

This is why… the new interface lies. The IP statically assigned. Old UI knows. New UI says DHCP but also shows the static IP.

New UI says DHCP when it’s clearly not.

"You may have seen in the news that all UK networks have committed to closing their 3G networks. Here at Vodafone, we've started switching off our 3G network across the UK."

Yes, we'd noticed.

Service that was usable is now 2G or just no-service.

So much for the promise 4G or 5G will absolutely be in place and coverage will be sorted before it gets turned off...

Why do so many bloody apps accept multiple logins/identities (y'know, like, say, work and personal), and then accept links to the app via the web etc which when you click on them, open the app, and don't ask WHICH identity to do that thing with - and just use whichever you last used...

It's bloody hopeless, potentially dangerous, sometimes embarrassing, and can lead to endless issues.

Maybe we could put AI to the side for one minute and just use some actual I when we design apps?!

When Apple has finished jerking around with “spatial computing” maybe they could find a way to stop apps abusing notifications you allow because of an essential service they provide to also spam your phone with marketing and sales crap using those notifications.

Today in Jurassic Failure...

Still down as it turns out they don't really understand PPPoE.

Apparently the reason it isn't working is somehow that the 'keepalive' setting is set to 10 seconds on our router, and they think it should be 50 seconds.

Let's ignore that they're just terminating the PPPoE immediately upon authentication shall we?
