Wild how it took so long to do something so simple. Not that I long to visit the byward Market but Majors Hill or Rideau Falls were rarely on the list of destinations if this was the direction of travel. But this makes basic access possible especially with the bridge open and the new NCC lookout on the +50% complete?? status

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@grivettcarnac Itโ€™s pretty great. The market area could use some work to make it safer of cyclists; Iโ€™m not a fan of the bollards in the middle of the path at the American embassy; Iโ€™m pretty certain people have hit them.

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@geekingirl @grivettcarnac Even on my bike, it feels like Iโ€™m going to hit them unless Iโ€™m doing 5km/hr.

Sleep, sweet sleep. So refreshing! And it also serves as a powerful running speed enhancer. As I was starting my run, I expected my pace to be in the usual 5:20-5:35 range on the outset and faster after some kilometers. But today was different, as I started with 5:17 and then went below 5:00/km and kept that pace for some time. Sweet. So my main takeaway is: More sleep. (I knew this well in advance, but I have to state the obviousโ€ฆ) Have a great Sunday, yโ€˜all!

Saturday:
Slept in; nearly 11 hours of ๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ’ค
24.6 km of (20ยฐC with a Humidex of 26 ยฐC)
Followed by a bunch of digital puttering.

Will edit up today's video and once that's done, settle in for a movie.

Turns out it's the anniversary of the Mount St Helens eruption (https://xoxo.zone/@todayonscreen/112463102971925755), so I guess tonight's movie will be Volcano and Danteโ€™s Peak. ๐ŸŽ‰

One of the largest HM in the world happened today in Gรถteborg. My new employer sponsors runners ๐Ÿ‘Š (signup fee, tent in the starting area with drinks, bbq, etc). Though I have my main ultra race next week I participated and took it as a training run (easy tempo pace without pushing it, definitely not race pace ). My start was at 1345 with over 30C in the sun (26C regular). ๐Ÿฅต๐Ÿ˜Ž. It was a fun event. More than 200000 spectators along the course. (Havenโ€™t run it since 2004 (1:19 - 20 years later 20 minutes slower ๐Ÿคฃ)). Legs felt quite fresh after it. Ran back home ๐Ÿ™ˆ (4km). Heat was noticeable on the HR. But it didnโ€™t had an effect on my hydration needs. Took only small sips every 5K at the aid stations. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Good day. #trailrunning #running https://www.goteborgsvarvet.se/

Iโ€™m running the Hackney Half tomorrow with my wife tomorrow. This is probably the least training Iโ€™ve done for a race ever due to injury and life. However Iโ€™m looking forward to not going too hard and enjoying the atmosphere. ๐Ÿ™‚

WTL,

@dredmann666 I never have, even at that speed, but itโ€™s important to remember that weโ€™re all different. You know your body best; if you feel you need to, then Iโ€™d folllow that. You can always try not doing g it another time and see if it makes any difference.

Itโ€™s that moment in Friday evening when I realize I can sleep in until I wake up tomorrow. Aiming for ten hours!

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@axxl I can. ๐Ÿคฃ From my teenage years until mid way through 2020 (30+years), I slept between three and four & a half hours most nights, and I have learned my lesson about how important sleep is.

We got a dog before having kids, and decided that was good enough for us. ๐Ÿคฃ

the Ogden tomorrow.

I've been training to hit 1:25 since my half marathon at St. George last October. My PR is 1:29.

Unfortunately, the training hasn't gone to plan. Despite running hills, threshold intervals, long tempos, and lots of slow easy runs, the best I can probably hope for is 1:28.

However, this course is more difficult having about 1/3 the elevation drop of St. George and some rolling hills. 1:28 would mean a significant fitness improvement.

Here we go.

Infographic showing key performance metrics for running from October 2023 to May 2024. Pace has improved by 0:25 min/mile. Power has improved by 27 watts. VO2 max has improved by 5 mL/kg/min.

@WhippoorwillSong When I crossed King Edward on my way home, not one, not two, not three, four, or five vehicles blew a red light. Six did. Only one of them may get caught by the red light camera.

Maybe we need spike strips that come up on red. ๐Ÿค”

Friday:
102 seconds of plank
11 minutes of yoga for runners
30 minutes of HIIT
20 minutes of strength training
5.24 km of (17ยฐC, 100% humidity)

Everything up to the run was tough, but fine. The run was best described as suffering in motion. By the time I was done, there was a Humidex of 26ยฐC, and I did not handle it well.

It's mid-May and it's too hot out in the morning. I know this is only going to get worse, short and long term.

Can we please have winter back?

<sighs in digital>

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@sebastianhahn I think so? Iโ€™d say it worth trying out (I mean, thatโ€™s what I did). Youโ€™re already mixing things up.

Iโ€™m doing an hour of Apple
Fitness Monday to Friday; yoga for runners, then 20 minutes of HIIT, 30 of strength, then the next day 30 HIIT, and 20 strength.

The HIIT is tough (none of the workouts are the same so far) - Iโ€™m in my 50s, but itโ€™s nice to be challenged like this. I donโ€™t do much of the jumping as I donโ€™t want to wake our neighbour downstairs. ๐Ÿคฃ
