About by PCalc for visionOS is now available!

Perhaps the most pointless app on Vision Pro, but still quite fun to play with. This is a complete remake of the original PCalc About screen in VR. It's basically me experimenting with what's possible today with RealityKit, over-engineering things as usual, and then for some inexplicable reason actually shipping it. I hope you enjoy it!

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/about-by-pcalc/id1613982997?platform=vision

Hundreds of objects swirl around a PCalc icon.
A lovely view of the public transport options in the PCalc About screen.
A distant dragon watches over the city.

@jamesthomson Can't wait to play with it :)

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

@siracusa Thanks for posting that @MichaelWhelan is on here! Followed. And I have that book too.

I apologise in advance and don’t mean to offend anyone, but there’s an account called historyofart and I just have to say that 100 times out of 100 I’m going to read that as History O’Fart.

@Alice @TheBreadmonkey I have been by that a hundred times and never seen it, and now I think I will never be able to unsee it. Thanks, Alice, for the laugh. :)

Watched part 1 of the Steve Martin documentary on AppleTV. I’ve always loved Steve but boy, I had no idea how hard he worked or how long it took for him to earn his fame.

The doc is heart-warming, sincere, self-deprecating and fascinating. Looking forward to part 2. Highly recommended.

@gedeonm As fun as part one is, part two is even more fun. You're in for a treat. :)

Finished Bluefin today, it's all downhill from here! That's right @kyle . Once bketelsen figured out how to get brew back on the host without busting host things it was all over.

We have wielded @Wildbill 's tool against him.

In more serious news @kylegospo is going to SCaLE so it'll be meeting of the Kyles!

Can any Mastodon lawyers settle an argument between me and my spouse? If Trump gets elected again, is it possible that he could run for a third term at the end of what would be his non-consecutive second term? We have looked at the 22nd amendment, and there seems to be some wiggle room there.

Wildbill,
@Wildbill@mastodon.social avatar

@Klaxun I’m not a lawyer but I watch a lot of LegalEagle, and it sounds like the opening line of section 1 says no:

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice…”

Wildbill,
@Wildbill@mastodon.social avatar

@Klaxun Elected more than twice is pretty clear, I think, though?

Wildbill,
@Wildbill@mastodon.social avatar

@Klaxun I am hopeful that they wouldn't. I don't think this current batch of Supremes are idiots - far from it - but i do think they like their power, and a Trump-gone-wild with more than one term is a definite threat to their power. What's the one thing a wannabe dictator has zero need for? A Supreme Court who can act as a check on them. So, I am sorta hopeful that the Supremes will act in self-preservation with respect to Trump matters.

I was visiting ILM (when it was still an unmarked facility in a San Rafael business park) while the "Genesis Effect" explosion sequence was being filmed for the 2nd Trek movie ("Wrath of Kahn", the best of all the Trek films).

In a little side room, there was a color graphics CRT display that was very slowly painting individual frames, line by line (maybe taking a minute or more per frame, I don't remember exactly). As each frame completed, a camera mounted pointing at the display would automatically click and expose a frame of film, then the process would begin again for the next frame.

I couldn't resist putting my hand between the camera and the display, and that's why if you watch the sequence very carefully in the finished film you can see my hand for one frame. JUST KIDDING! I didn't actually do that. But it did occur to me at the time.

Wildbill,
@Wildbill@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren Thanks for the stories - please keep sharing them! So cool. And anechoic chambers are a completely weird thing. I've been in them a few times in my life and every time it's completely disorienting and weird - almost alien.
