Random comment (which won't get to the college aged girl that needs to hear it, or would even be listened to): riding your bicycle/ebicycle with your hair flowing in the wind may make you feel free and happy, but if you crash on the hill out here, it will also make you (or crippled for life). .

ai6yr,

@njwatt Good parenting!

ai6yr,

@va7ncd I did that in a mountain bike race (along with breaking my collar bone). Shattered the helmet into several pieces. I would be dead if I hadn't been wearing the helmet. (notably, decided racing was not for me...)

ai6yr,

*knowing several families who have lost children or loved ones due to skull injuries sustained in bicycle crashes sans helmet. And having heard more than enough first responders who attended to those victims/patients.

ai6yr,

@va7ncd Oh boy... the hiking trails where I am still leery of falling (as a climber even) and people come tearing down the trail on a mountain bike. 😬

So, in 1994, IBM went into a project with me to film "The IBM Family Guide to the Internet."

We all have those embarrassing moments in my career. This was one. My 'acting' career ended soon after LOL.

This was the opening scene.

Epic!

ai6yr,

@jimcarroll LOL better than my one published technical book, which (being very niche) ended up in the book sale pile with all the rest of the "how to X" on your computer books a year later... I think <15,000 books sold, probably a lot less (I seem to recall it was advance + maybe $200 a year for a couple of years after publishing, ha ha).

Hmm. Need a good recipe for .

ai6yr,

@MolnarSteven Will be interesting.

ai6yr,

@smitty Hmm, well, we'll see how it turns out here!

ai6yr,

@smitty what recipe did you use? We have a bunch of honey we need to convert to mead and my son is interested in blackberry mead.

Lots of major transportation routes through are cut off... unless you own a swamp boat.

Partial list of closures, shown for illustrative purposes

ai6yr,

@k2za Yeah, just make sure to put the big "X" for your exit on the other side of the roof. Though, it sounds like there are not a lot of folks trapped in attics at the moment, just unable to leave the house (that would change with any dam breaks... but the rain has moved, and it's now just rising rivers to eyeball).

I will have to start using "cumulative user-seconds per day of Ice Cream Time" to measure the quality of my day.

ai6yr,

@larand Heheheh

ai6yr,

Or perhaps, "Cumulative user-seconds per day of phone screamtime" (ie how many seconds per day spent screaming at my phone).

are now using human objects (bird spikes, etc.) as and defense measures in their nests, researchers find. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-66163943?at_medium=mastodon&at_campaign=mastodon

Volcanic activity in has resumed and a live drone stream can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YUXO8ne12w

I don't know what it is, but I could watch lava flows all day long, set to some calming music

ai6yr,

@rvaweather Lava makes a great background video...

    Hmm, wasn't planning on pulling out the shade cloth until August, but might have to do that for this two week .

    ai6yr,

    https://airwaves.social/@J Not bad advice, assuming you are in a dry climate. (wouldn't do that in Houston... but would in Phoenix. If I dared to go outside in Phoenix in summer, LOL)

    ai6yr, to random

    Hmm, maybe won't be doing much this weekend. Not without some serious hydration + A/C breaks.

    ai6yr,

    @hisstogramma Oh yeah, definitely don't do that!

    @ai6yr Thanks for the alt text I see on some of the NWS bots. That's great!

    ai6yr,

    @glightly The bots I use to pull text off the NWS sites directly is able to populate the alt text, luckily. Usually on the NWS sites there is some embedded alt text...

    ai6yr,

    @glightly I have figured out (technically) how to pull a graphic and run automatic OCR on it, if possible.

    Good reminder (from @jsrailton) on how leaking fitness tracker data can be used in finding out all kind of classified/sensitive information. https://citizenlab.ca/2018/01/fit-leaking-citizen-lab-research-fitness-tracker-privacy/
